WARDOGS FIELD MANUAL

Fix keybind conflicts and mounted-weapon reloads

Triage reload failures after rebinding inputs without turning a player workaround into a universal fix.

If a CIWS, TALON, mortar or other mounted weapon stops reloading after a keybind change, return to a known control layout, back up the local config and record the exact conflict before trying any manual recovery. Team17 has acknowledged reports for investigation.

Before you start

  • The exact mounted weapon and the last input you changed.
  • The client version and a screenshot or exact text of the failure.
  • A backup of the local settings file before any manual edit.

Name the failure

The current Steam report describes CIWS, TALON and mortar weapons remaining at zero ammunition or firing once without reloading after keybind changes. Comments connect the failure to conflicts around the reload action and helicopter controls, but reports also show cases that persisted after a reset.

  1. Record whether the weapon fires its first shot.
  2. Record the displayed ammunition count and whether a reload prompt appears.
  3. Note whether infantry reload, vehicle reload or both were rebound.
  4. Test once on another mounted weapon if it is safe to do so.

Try the safe reset first

Do not paste a stranger’s full configuration into your game. First restore the in-game defaults, remove a conflicting helicopter or vehicle bind, restart the client and test the mounted weapon again. Change one action at a time after the test.

  1. Write down your custom bindings or export a copy if the game provides one.
  2. Restore the default layout in the controls menu.
  3. Restart WARDOGS and test the affected weapon before adding custom binds.
  4. Rebind one action, then retest infantry and mounted reload separately.

Treat manual config edits as recovery

The Steam discussion contains player-written edits to GameUserSettings.ini, including a local Windows path. Those edits are setup-specific and can remove or corrupt unrelated bindings. If you inspect the file, make a dated backup first and keep the original available for restoration; do not use a copied block as an official fix.

  1. Close the game before touching the file.
  2. Back up the complete file to a separate location.
  3. Change only the named binding you understand, or restore the backup instead.
  4. Launch, test the original symptom and stop if the file is rewritten unexpectedly.

Send a report that can be reproduced

Team17’s support response says the reload report was forwarded for investigation. Include the weapon, platform, input device, bindings before and after, whether defaults helped, client version and a short reproduction sequence.

Common problems

  • A workaround that fixes one player’s file is not a supported default.
  • Deleting a settings file without a backup can remove unrelated controls.
  • Do not edit anti-cheat or executable files; use the official report channel for unresolved input failures.
