Your first shelter: workbench, bed and a ventilated fire

Make a usable early base, keep smoke moving out and check your resting setup before the next trip.

The short answer

Start with a covered bed and workbench, then arrange a nearby fire with rain protection and smoke ventilation. A roof alone does not solve the fire problem. [1][2]

Start with a usable base

GameSpot suggests using an abandoned house as temporary shelter while establishing a base. It cautions players to check for a beehive before moving in. [1]

Its guide describes covering the bed and placing the workbench under shelter. At a usable workbench, it points to the repair icon for repairing tools. [1]

Plan the fire and its escape path

PC Gamer warns that indoor campfire smoke can harm the character and that rain can put out an exposed fire. Its example uses a chimney opening with rain cover that still lets smoke escape. [2]

Check before you leave

The campfire guide describes an indoor bed near a fire as a sleeping and respawn setup, and says sleeping provides a Rested buff. This does not establish a precise comfort radius or buff duration. [2]

Editorial recommendation

Test the setup before relying on it: interact with the bed and workbench, check the fire and watch where the smoke goes. Resolve warnings in your own game before setting off for the boss. [2]
