Build a roof that stays up

Pre-1.0 reference · selected 1.0 corrections · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Start with posts connected to terrain, a boulder or a tree. Add a short vertical support path, let the next floor or roof bay settle and inspect its color before extending. Build Core wood Log poles with the Hammer near a Workbench; later Wood iron poles need a nearby Forge. Use reinforcement where the roof needs more reach. Stone resists rain and has high durability, but it does not create unlimited vertical support. Keep a covered workbench, bed and exit working while you build.

Building and serving menus

Hammer and Serving Tray menus were overhauled. Find the named piece in the current menu. Check materials and the required station instead of relying on an old tab position.

Before you start

Read the support color before repairing or rebuilding

If a new roof tile keeps breaking, inspect its support before placing another. If the wood stays in place but looks rotten after rain, check durability and weather cover separately. This is the accepted pre-1.0 diagnosis; it does not establish current-build support values. If part of the room has already fallen, start with the partial-collapse recovery sequence to preserve your footing, working bench and spawn before rebuilding.

With the Hammer equipped, aim at a building piece and read its support color. Blue is the strongest end of the display; colors toward red mean less remaining support for that material. Ground, trees and boulders provide full support, while well-supported stronger materials can also give ordinary Wood its full support. The color describes support, not hit points or weather condition.

A new piece extending from weak support can break once the support calculation settles. Each piece depends on its material and connections to supported neighbors. The game does not divide a beam’s capacity among everything attached to it: adding furniture or another roof tile does not use up a shared weight budget. Improve the actual support connection instead of emptying chests to lighten the floor.

Wait after adding or removing a support and inspect again before extending. Freshly placed pieces can look stronger while support values are still settling. Add a shorter, more vertical connection to a grounded post when the roof remains weak; a temporary color improvement is not proof the new bay will hold.

Hammer repair restores durability but does not improve an inadequate support path. Rain can make exposed wood look damaged, but weather wear and a collapsed roof are different problems. Cover the wood and repair its durability after the support is sound.

Choose a compact footprint and real anchors

Give the roof a shorter path to an anchor

Extending from one side

Each added piece depends on supported connections. Stop when the edge remains weak after settling.

Add a grounded connection

Add a more direct connection to ground, then place one roof bay, wait and inspect again.

Core wood
Log frame pieces. Still need supported connections.
Wood iron
Later reinforcement. Requires Forge range for placement.
Stone
Durable foundations. Durability is not unlimited vertical support.
Conceptual support paths, not measured spans or in-game support colors. Check with the Hammer: repair restores durability; it does not strengthen a weak connection. Furniture does not consume a shared weight allowance.
  1. Mark the future workshop walls, storage and doorway on level ground before placing a high roof. Keep a clear walk lane from the entrance to the bench and an outside route for a cart. Do not place the first long beam over the bed or the only exit.
  2. Start each main post from terrain. A boulder or a living tree can also function as a grounded anchor when the building piece actually intersects it; inspect the color rather than assuming nearby scenery counts.
  3. Place a small test bay between two anchors: one floor, one wall height and one roof segment. Inspect every new piece with the Hammer. If the far side is already weak, shorten this bay or add another ground-connected post before copying it across the workshop.
  4. Leave a covered temporary Workbench and the claimed bed outside the demolition area. The Workbench may build while uncovered, but it must be sheltered to craft and repair; do not discover that distinction after the main room has fallen.

Use the material that solves this support problem

For a simple Core wood test column, select Log pole 4m in the Hammer build menu within Workbench range; each uses two Core wood. The piece name is Log pole, not Core wood pole. For a stone base, build the Stonecutter first and keep it within reach until replacement and repairs are complete.

For a Wood iron test column, select Wood iron pole with the Hammer near a Forge; each uses two ordinary Wood and one smelted Iron. It is not crafted in the Forge item tab. A remote build needs the Forge’s own materials too: use the shared Forge card and bring its Copper by the physical transport route along with the Iron. Make one supported column before committing the remaining bars.

Build the frame and roof in a recoverable order

  1. Build the ground-connected posts first. Add each higher post directly above or close to its anchor, and inspect its support color after every section. Add side braces only after the main vertical path remains healthy.
  2. Connect one roof bay, then its next support, instead of filling an entire weak roof plane. Work from the strongest frame toward the edge. Stop if the next roof tile is red or collapses; reinforce the frame rather than spending material on more tiles.
  3. Put weather cover over the finished bay before moving to the next one. Keep smoke paths and fire safety from the shelter guide in the finished room; a tall roof does not make a sealed smoke pocket safe.
  4. Only remove a temporary brace after the permanent floor, post and roof section has been inspected. Remove one at a time, wait for support to settle and inspect the roof again. Keep an exterior ladder, a clear door and a way down that does not rely on the last untested roof piece.

Bring stations inside one at a time

Move the Workbench, Forge or storage into a completed, covered bay only after its floor, roof and exit are sound. Test a repair or a low-value craft before dismantling the temporary setup. A station that has lost cover can still allow building coverage but cannot repair the equipment needed to fix the failure.

Keep stations on a supported floor so removing their foundation does not destroy the working setup. This is about maintaining support, not the station’s apparent weight. Keep the Forge near Wood iron reinforcement and the Stonecutter near stone construction when rearranging the room.

Treat the finished building as a working base, not a proof that every future upper floor will work. Repeat the test-bay sequence whenever the footprint, height or roof shape changes. The safe decision is to add another anchored line, not to stretch a near-red one farther.

Recover the room without turning one failure into a base loss

  1. Stop adding pieces. Step onto known supported ground by the planned door or outside ladder, then check whether the bed, fire, Workbench and stored recovery kit still work. The immediate risks are losing your footing, cover and usable stations.
  2. Move portable valuables from the weak area and leave the temporary Workbench in a covered safe bay. Repair surviving pieces only after locating the missing grounded support; repair alone will not make the next roof piece hold.
  3. Rebuild from the nearest grounded post upward. Place one replacement support, wait for its color to settle, then restore one floor or roof segment. Collect accessible dropped materials from safe footing before continuing.
  4. If the bed was destroyed, rebuild it under finished cover, claim it and verify the spawn point before continuing. If the route home or the base was damaged by enemies as well, use the base-recovery guide before returning to cosmetic work.

When something goes wrong

The new roof tile breaks as soon as I place it.

Stop extending from the weak piece. Add or move a post so the roof has a shorter path to a blue anchor, then test one tile again.

The stone wall is strong, but the next level still turns red.

Stone durability and vertical stability are separate. Add a direct supported path from below or change the span; do not assume a stronger wall raises the roof indefinitely.

The wooden wall looks rotten after rain.

Give it roof cover and repair its durability with the Hammer. Then inspect its support color separately; weather repair does not fix a weak frame.

The Workbench will build but cannot repair my tools.

Restore its roof and cover in a safe bay. Building range and crafting/repair shelter are different requirements.

I used the Iron support but cannot get more to the build site.

Iron cannot pass through ordinary portals. Use the existing cart or boat plan, and reserve transported bars for the supports that genuinely need them.
