Smelt your first iron and choose the next upgrade

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Bring Scrap iron home by land or boat, then smelt one scrap with two coal into one iron. Build anvils for forge level 2 before selecting a base iron mace, pickaxe, or axe; each costs 20 iron. Pick one improvement that solves your next task, keep the rest stored, and return to the crypt only with a named target.

Turn Scrap iron into usable bars, reach forge level 2, and choose a first iron tool, weapon, or transport project without spending a whole haul by accident.

Research-based guide · Pre-1.0 mechanics reference; 1.0 compatibility is not yet verified · Version & review context

Before you start

  • Scrap iron safely stored after clearing a crypt, plus a physical route for later metal loads.
  • A sheltered forge and smelter with a reliable coal supply from the existing smelting setup.
  • A decision about the next need: Swamp combat, future mountain mining, woodcutting, or a larger boat—not a requirement to craft every iron item at once.

Turn Scrap iron into bars at a planned smelter

  1. Store the whole haul before feeding the smelter. Scrap iron weighs less than finished iron and neither can use a normal wood portal, so avoid carrying a full bar load while also trying to recover or repair.
  2. Add coal and Scrap iron to the smelter. The shared recipe budgets one Scrap iron and two coal for one iron. Watch the output area and move finished bars into labeled storage rather than leaving them on a busy base path.
  3. Separate three counts: bars reserved for a chosen item, bars reserved for construction you already decided on, and unallocated bars. A full Swamp-tier equipment collection consumes far more iron than a first practical upgrade, so do not treat every bar as spare.

Build anvils before choosing a base iron tool

The base iron mace, pickaxe, and axe in this route each need forge level 2. A basic forge is level 1; build anvils near it to add the level. The anvils cost wood and bronze, not iron, so this is the place to check your older stores before spending the new bars.

Keep the forge sheltered and covered for crafting and repairs. A forge upgrade must be in the forge’s connection range; if the displayed level does not change, reposition it rather than assuming the iron recipe is unavailable.

Choose the first 20 iron by the job it unlocks

Our default combat-focused recommendation is the iron mace if Swamp enemies are still the bottleneck, because it keeps the route aligned with the blunt damage guidance used in the crypt. Choose the pickaxe if your concrete next milestone is Mountain resources. Choose the axe when a woodcutting task is actually waiting. These are editorial priorities, not hidden progression locks.

Do not promise a later craft using bars you have not collected. Put the chosen 20-bar target in a chest label or map note, then return for more scrap only after knowing which recipe, forge level, and non-metal materials remain.

More reliable Swamp fightingIron mace: 20 iron + 4 wood + 3 leather scraps. That all weapons or iron armor must be crafted before your next crypt.
Preparing for later Mountain miningIron pickaxe: 20 iron + 3 core wood. That it was required to mine the Muddy scrap piles that supplied the iron.
Woodcutting project or stronger axe roleIron axe: 20 iron + 4 wood + 2 leather scraps. That it is the only sensible first upgrade for every player.

Use the Swamp harvest to strengthen repeat trips

Turnip stew and sausages both require a level-2 cauldron. Build the Spice rack near the cauldron only after keeping enough turnips for Seed-turnips. Four sausages use entrails from Draugr, so collecting that food is a byproduct of controlled Swamp fights, not a reason to lure a group into the portal camp.

A first batch of turnip food can make later crypt trips more comfortable, but growing crops takes time. Keep using the food combination that you can replenish now while the garden matures. Food improvement, iron production, and boss preparation are separate decisions; none is proof that you are already ready for Bonemass.

Close the loop before choosing the next biome

  1. Craft the chosen item at the correct forge level, equip it or store it where you can find it, then repair it at the forge before the next expedition.
  2. Restock food, poison resistance, light, and recovery supplies. Check the safe-side portal and marked crypt route again after each substantial haul or base change.
  3. Leave excess iron stored. The Swamp still holds later goals such as more crypts, food ingredients and the Bonemass locator, but this guide ends at usable first iron rather than claiming that one item makes the next boss safe.

When something goes wrong

The iron recipe is missing at the forge.

Pick up the iron and non-metal materials yourself, then check that the forge displays level 2. Build or reposition the anvils near the sheltered forge; a level-one forge does not satisfy these base iron recipes.

I used all my iron on a first item and still need transport or armor.

Return to the stored route and make another controlled crypt haul. The site does not promise a full Swamp set from one crypt; choose the next purchase by its job and reserve bars before crafting.

I cannot portal iron bars back to the crypt.

That restriction is normal for the default route. Carry finished equipment and iron nails through if allowed, but move Scrap iron and iron by the physical land or boat route.

The Spice rack will not upgrade the cauldron.

Check every ingredient and its placement near the cauldron. It must be supported from a ceiling or shelf; then confirm the cauldron displays level 2 before attempting turnip stew or sausages.
