Prepare for Bonemass with food, mead and an iron mace

Quick answer

Use your repeatable crypt route to make an iron mace, stock poison-resistance and healing meads, and cook three useful foods. Locate Bonemass with a Swamp Vegvisir, collect ten Withered bones, and clear a walkable arena with a protected portal outside the fight before summoning.

Before you start

  • A completed first-iron loop, with a sheltered forge, anvils and a physical route for more Scrap iron.
  • Working Mead ketill, fermenter, level-2 cauldron and a turnip garden from Swamp preparation.
  • A safe home spawn, repaired travel equipment, and a portal connection you have actually walked through.
1

Spend additional iron on the fight you are preparing

The default weapon for this route is the iron mace. Make it if your first iron went into a tool. For a useful improvement, connect a forge cooler beside the existing anvils to reach forge level 3, then spend ten additional iron on the quality-2 mace in the Upgrade menu. This is our preparation target, not a game-enforced minimum.

A banded shield is a practical companion for ordinary Swamp enemies. Keep moving away from dangerous boss swings rather than assuming a shield can absorb them. If normal Draugr already overwhelm your current armor, improve it before summoning; the three base iron pieces are a concrete available armor route. A full iron set costs 60 iron plus six deer hides, so it is a separate project from the mace and pickaxe.

Repair the equipment you chose and try the loadout on controlled daytime Swamp encounters. If a routine encounter drains every food and mead reserve, your next job is another supply or practice trip, not the boss offering.

Build a replenishable food and mead supply

Our suggested meal is sausages, black soup and turnip stew: two health foods and one stamina food, all reachable with the Spice rack. Keep turnips for Seed-turnips and enough ingredients for both the fight and a recovery meal. Refresh food before the trip; three nearly expired foods are not a fresh boss loadout.

Make medium-healing base at the lit Mead ketill, then ferment it. It heals over time and has a cooldown, so use it while retreating with room to breathe. Minor stamina mead is an optional emergency reserve. Keep poison-resistance mead as a separate requirement and drink it before exposure; healing does not cancel poison.

Gather bloodbags by drawing leeches close to firm ground and attacking from the bank with poison resistance already active. Honey comes from your hives; pick raspberries and dandelions in the Meadows, thistle in the Black Forest or Swamp, and yellow mushrooms in cleared dungeons. Split the bloodbag stock between soup, healing and the frost mead you will need after this boss. Wait for full fermentation and label the finished-drink chest so you do not pack undrinkable bases.

Locate the skull altar and prepare it before the offering

  1. During controlled crypt runs, interact with a red Bonemass Vegvisir to mark an altar. Some ruined Swamp structures also have one. If you have no marker, continue the known crypt loop; finding one is a scouting task, not evidence that you should summon immediately.
  2. Keep ten Withered bones from Muddy scrap piles and crypt loot. These are not ordinary Bone fragments. Leave the offering stored while you scout the marked altar in daylight.
  3. Place a named, connected portal at a sheltered staging camp away from the altar and its approach. Walk the escape route both ways; keep the boat and reserve equipment outside the planned fighting area.
  4. Clear nearby enemies and reachable spawners. Use the hoe to smooth a broad walking loop around the skull, avoiding deep water, roots and dead ends. Walk it with weapons drawn to find places where movement or line of sight fails.
  5. Put spare food, poison mead and a backup weapon on the home side. Start the fight only after resting, repairing, filling food slots and confirming that the offering and finished meads are packed.

Find the glowing red runestone on a crypt wall that reads Vegvisir: Bonemass, [E] Register location; deeper in, pick up the Withered Bone at its prompt.

What this preparation is based on

This is a researched pre-1.0 route checked on 8 September 2026 UTC. Valheim 1.0 and Deep North released on 9 September, but this guide’s mechanics have not been individually revalidated for that build. Exact item tables are community references, and the loadout and arena choices are editorial guidance rather than a recorded gameplay test.

If something goes wrong

The mace upgrade is missing.

Bring the existing mace and ten iron, select Upgrade, and check forge level 3. The anvils and forge cooler must both connect to the forge; a second copy of one upgrade does not count.

I cannot find ten bones.

Continue clearing Muddy scrap piles in Sunken Crypts and check their loot. Withered bones and Bone fragments are different items; do not collect skeleton drops expecting them to summon Bonemass.

The altar is surrounded by water.

Improve a walkable loop with the hoe where practical and test the exit. If you cannot create a manageable approach, keep scouting rather than spending the offering in a trap.
