WARDOGS FIELD MANUAL

Fly with intent.

Helicopters are the fastest way to change the fight—and the fastest way to donate a vehicle when the inputs are unfamiliar. Set up the controls, test one variable and carry the recovery answer.

FLIGHT DECK / INPUTS

The control mapping below is sourced from the current Steam FAQ and community launch notes. It is a setup guide, not a claim that every peripheral or default bind behaves identically.

HELICOPTER SETUP

Test the bird
before combat.

Spend one safe run checking pitch, roll, yaw, collective, free-look and the emergency exit. Changing every setting at once makes the next crash impossible to diagnose.

SETTINGS PATHCommunity-reported

Start in the controls menu

Open Settings → Controls → Settings. The current Steam FAQ points players to the rotary-vehicle mouse controls rather than assuming the default aircraft profile is comfortable.

  • Rotary Vehicle Mouse Control: enable when using mouse flight.
  • Helicopter Mouse Swipe Left / Right: roll.
  • Helicopter Mouse Swipe Up / Down: pitch.
  • Invert Y Axis – Air Vehicle: match it to your muscle memory.

ASSISTSCommunity-reported

Use stability while learning

Flight Assists, Stability Assist and Auto-Hover Assist are there to reduce workload while you learn the aircraft. Turn on one assist, test it, then change one variable at a time so you know what improved the aircraft.

  • Flight Assists: reduce the amount of correction required.
  • Stability Assist: useful while learning small inputs.
  • Auto-Hover Assist: a recovery aid, not a substitute for an exit plan.

Separate looking from flying

Free-look is listed on Left Alt in the current FAQ. Use it to scan a landing or extraction path without asking the aircraft to yaw through the same movement.

  • Hold Left Alt to look around when the bind is active.
  • Scan the landing area before lowering collective.
  • Call the destination so passengers are ready for the exit.

INPUT CONFLICTCommunity-reported

Check Spacebar before a live lift

The FAQ notes that Spacebar may fire helicopter weapons and can conflict with parachute behavior. Test the bind in a safe session before relying on it during an emergency exit.

  • Fire the helicopter weapon once in a safe test.
  • Verify parachute behavior independently.
  • Move either action if both are competing for the same input.

RECOVERYCommunity-reported

Keep a pilot kit

The current community tip sheet calls out fuel, a wrench and a resuscitator. A pilot who can repair, refuel or recover the crew keeps the vehicle in the team economy instead of turning every mistake into a replacement bill.

  • Fuel: avoid the empty-tank emergency.
  • Wrench: repair before the aircraft becomes a stationary target.
  • Resuscitator: plan for the downed teammate, not after the crash.

SAFE TEST

One bind
at a time.

  1. Lift, hover and land without changing the camera.
  2. Test pitch and roll separately; notice whether Y inversion feels correct.
  3. Use free-look to scan a landing, then return to the flight view.
  4. Test weapon fire and parachute behavior on separate deliberate inputs.
  5. Back up the config before experimenting: %LOCALAPPDATA%\Wardogs\Saved\Config\WindowsClient.

IF THE BIND STILL FAILS

Record the aircraft, input device, exact setting and client version. Use the official access and issue triage path for a report instead of publishing a workaround as a universal fix.
