Happy Wheels controls: keyboard, grab, eject and remapping

The browser defaults are arrow keys for movement and leaning, Space for the primary action, Shift and Ctrl for secondary actions, Z to eject and C to switch camera. After ejection, Space becomes the grab action. Check your own bindings before following a keyboard tutorial.

Default keys read directly from the browser version 1.89 keyboard-settings screen on September 21, 2026. Post-ejection poses use the legacy reference and reviewed footage. Steam controller button labels are not independently verified.

Official keyboard diagram: arrows move and lean, Space is the main action, Z ejects, Shift and Ctrl are other actions.

Steam v1.99.1 pause and fullscreen keys

On Steam v1.99.1, Escape pauses the game in addition to Tab, and F11 toggles fullscreen. These are developer-documented Steam shortcuts; the browser keyboard table below is a separate version-specific reference.

Default keyboard reference

ActionBrowser defaultWhat to remember
AccelerateUp arrowWhile attached to a vehicle.
Decelerate / reverseDown arrowBraking behavior depends on the vehicle.
Lean forwardRight arrowUse small corrections while learning.
Lean backLeft arrowA prolonged lean can overturn the vehicle.
Primary actionSpaceA character ability while mounted; grabbing after ejection.
Secondary action 1ShiftCharacter-specific behavior.
Secondary action 2CtrlCharacter-specific behavior.
EjectZChanges from vehicle control to body control.
Switch cameraCA camera action, not a movement input.

What the arrows do after you eject

The legacy ejection reference describes Up as extending the body and reaching overhead, Down as curling up, Left as drawing the joints backward, and Right as extending the legs and moving the arms forward. These are body poses; holding Up no longer drives an abandoned vehicle.

For a grab, bring the hands into contact with a grabbable surface while holding the primary action. Release it when you want to let go. A hand near a rope is not the same as a hand attached to it: watch whether the body starts hanging or rotating around the contact point.

Check or change your bindings

  1. In the browser main menu, open Options, then keyboard controls.
  2. Compare the “your settings” column with the default-setting column. The screen lists movement, primary and secondary actions, eject and camera separately.
  3. Select the binding you want to change and follow the screen prompt. Use restore defaults if you want the displayed defaults back.
  4. On Steam, consult the current in-game controller settings. Match actions such as Eject and Primary action to your chosen buttons; this page does not invent a universal Xbox or PlayStation mapping.

Why a grab or jump can fail

  • The rider is still attached, so Space performs the vehicle ability instead of grabbing.
  • The hands have not reached an object the level allows you to grab.
  • You are following default keys after changing your own bindings.
  • You are holding a direction that changes the body pose away from the target.
  • The character or level has a different starting setup from the demonstration.

Recognize an ejected rider and a working grip

Watch the change from the Segway setup to the rider hanging from the blue rope. The useful cue is physical attachment at the hands. The source has no input overlay; the keyboard reference above supplies the action names.

  1. 2:33 · Identify the starting rider

The Segway rider is visible before the rope section; the builder and numeric level ID are not established here.

  2. 2:42 · Watch the hands, not the vehicle

The rider is now in the rope section. A successful grip makes the body hang or rotate around the hand contact, rather than merely pass near the rope.

  3. 2:43 · Separate grip from body pose

The bent body beneath the blue rope illustrates why grabbing and posing are different decisions. Use the default controls table, then check your own remapping.
