Happy Wheels controller and Steam Deck support after v1.99.1

Steam advertises controller support. Update v1.99.1 fixes non-standard controller recognition and reduces input latency. The patch does not establish a universal button map, a Steam Deck rating, or device-specific performance.

Official Steam listing, launch note and v1.99.1 patch checked September 23, 2026. Kingy has not tested a controller, Steam Deck or installed Steam build for this guide.

What is supported by the sources

QuestionCurrent answer
Are controllers advertised?Yes. Steam lists controller support.
What did v1.99.1 change? It fixed non-standard controller recognition and reduced input latency.
Is Linux listed?Yes, under SteamOS + Linux requirements. The update also fixed a Wayland startup crash.
Is a specific Deck rating established here? No. Check the current Steam compatibility panel.
Are all menu and editor actions mapped? Not established by the advertised feature alone.
Can levels be used offline?Steam lists downloadable levels. Download and test the specific levels before relying on offline play.

A useful setup check on your own device

  1. Start the game with the controller connected and note the current build and device model.
  2. Open the game’s input settings. Identify movement, leaning, Primary action, both secondary actions and Eject by action name.
  3. Try one known featured level. Test driving and leaning before combining them with jumps or other abilities.
  4. Separately test the menus you need: level selection, restart, search and any editor operation. Successful driving does not prove those interfaces use the same inputs.
  5. If you use a Steam Input layout, note which layout is active before comparing it with the game’s native settings. Check for conflicting mappings rather than changing several settings at once.

Make a problem specific enough to troubleshoot

Record whether the controller is missing entirely, works in gameplay but not menus, repeats an input, or triggers the wrong action. Add the model, connection type, layout and one reproducible example.

For a Deck issue, separate input behavior, display readability, performance and network access. “Does it work?” can mean any of those. No FPS target, battery estimate or recommended graphics preset is supplied without device testing.

Check offline needs before travelling

Download the levels you want while connected, then test them with Steam offline mode. Steam advertises level downloads for offline play, but that does not mean the live catalogue, leaderboard submissions or every menu works without a connection.

The developer says offline support will continue to improve. Recheck the current notes after an update if offline play is important to your trip.
