Separate a connection failure from a missing level
| What you see | What it tells you |
|---|---|
| Steam shows no levels or reports an IO error | A player-facing symptom. The error alone does not prove a level was deleted or a server is overloaded. |
| The official game site also fails to load | The connection to Total Jerkface may be involved. Compare networks or consult the pinned developer note. |
| The browser catalogue works, but Steam does not | A Steam-specific issue remains possible. Record the game version and the exact level before reporting it. |
| Only one user level fails | Check the title, creator and link. A failed load by itself does not distinguish a bad link from a temporary connection problem. |
Try these checks in order
- Install Steam update v1.99.1, then restart the client and retry the same level.
- Open totaljerkface.com in a browser. If the site and Steam both fail to reach levels, record that comparison; it can help distinguish a shared network route from a client-only symptom.
- Try one known featured level, then the affected user level. Keep the exact title, creator, level URL or ID, and error text.
- Check the developer’s pinned “If you cannot see any levels” discussion before changing network settings.
- If the problem persists, report the build, region, ISP if you are comfortable sharing it, and the steps that reproduced the error through the support route in the official launch post.
If your ISP blocks the game domain
The pinned developer note says some UK ISPs block totaljerkface.com. It suggests changing DNS settings, with 1.1.1.1 as an example, or using a VPN. Replies in that same thread also say Happy Wheels works on several UK providers, so location alone does not establish the cause.
A Reddit report mentions an IO error, and another thread asks whether the servers were down. Their replies speculate about overload and ISP filtering; they do not verify a universal outage or a tested fix. Use the developer’s note as the supported guidance, and change DNS only if you are comfortable managing your network settings.
Keep your account and levels safe while diagnosing
- Do not delete saved levels or unlink accounts to fix an IO error. The sources here do not recommend either action.
- Do not assume a failed catalogue request means the level is gone. Retry after restoring access, then search by exact title and creator.
- Steam advertises downloads for offline play. Download levels before losing connection and test them with Steam offline mode; the sources do not promise offline access to the complete catalogue.
