Parry, dodge and counter timing
What official footage shows about deflection and counters, and a first-week method for testing timings on the launch build.
Defensive play is the heart of the combat system as demonstrated — but 'demonstrated' is not 'documented'. This page explains the footage evidence, then gives you a first-week testing method that works no matter what the final timings are.
What the footage shows
Official footageOfficial gameplay clips repeatedly show Soul deflecting enemy blows at the moment of contact — a blade-clash with a visible spark — and immediately flowing into a counter attack. The same footage shows a dodge that moves Soul through space, and at least one 'clash' sequence against a similarly armed duelist that reads like a contest of deflections.
Taken together, the demonstrated defensive vocabulary includes: deflection of sword-class attacks, a dodge action, and counter finishers triggered from successful defends. Trailer choreography cannot confirm frame windows, input specifics (button vs hold), or whether every enemy attack is deflectable — treat every one of those as unverified.
The first-week timing method
Editorial guidanceFrame data will not exist until players can instrument the game. Until then, use a reproducible practice protocol instead of trusting forum ranges:
- Pick one early enemy type and one move of theirs.
- Attempt the deflect version and the dodge version of the same move twenty times each, alternating, from the same spacing.
- Record three things per attempt: did the input land, did the enemy recover first, and what was the follow-up window like?
- Compare your notes to the wiki's records — and if they disagree with a guide, the guide loses until you can reproduce the guide's claim.
What to distrust until launch
UnverifiedThis review has no verified frame windows, stagger tables or boss counters. Assess any other report by its source, build and test method; the fact that Kingy has not checked it does not make it invented.
