Happy Wheels level editor: build and test your first platform

Start with one fixed, interactive rectangle beneath the character, test that it supports the rider, then add a single obstacle. The browser editor exposes Test Level, Level Options, Save Level and Load Level in its menu. A saved draft, a playable victory and a published level are separate milestones.

Browser version 1.89 editor menus and shape properties inspected September 21, 2026, with an attributed tool demonstration. Steam v1.99.1 achievement wording checked September 23. Kingy has not verified Steam editor achievement unlocks.

Before you start

Open LEVEL EDITOR from the official browser main menu. The logged-out editor says an account is needed to save and share creations. You can inspect the tools and test an unsaved scene, but establish legitimate account access before depending on a saved draft.

Keep the first exercise small. Its goal is to prove that the rider can stand and move on your terrain, not to finish a decorated 30-second course in one pass.

Build the test platform

  1. Choose the Shape Tool and select a rectangle. The properties include width, height, interactive and fixed.
  2. Make a wide, shallow rectangle and place it beneath the character’s wheels. Leave clear space ahead of the rider.
  3. Keep interactive enabled so the platform participates in the physical scene, and fixed enabled so the ground does not become a loose object.
  4. Open the editor menu and choose Test Level. T also starts or ends a test in the inspected browser editor.
  5. Check that the rider is supported and can move. End the test before making another edit.
  6. Add one small shape as an obstacle, leaving a forgiving landing area. Test again and change only the obstacle size or position.
  7. Use the Selection Tool to select the object you intend to change. Read its properties before moving or resizing it.

From a test platform to a publishable course

Next, choose one obstacle idea and a finish condition supported by the editor. Make the finish reachable with the intended character and confirm that the game displays victory during testing. This edition does not invent an uninspected victory-tool menu sequence.

Save the work through the editor’s account-backed saving flow. Before sharing, check the title, description, allowed character, start position and a complete winning test. Reopen the saved version to make sure it contains the intended course.

The inspected menu establishes the build-and-test tools, but a full account publication flow was not completed here. Follow the current save/share prompts for your account; this page supplies no fabricated Publish button or supposed mandatory upload limit.

The editor achievements changed in Steam v1.99.1

A September 22 Reddit post complained that empty levels made for the original publication achievement were crowding the lists. That is one player’s report, not a catalogue-wide count. The v1.99.1 patch says the new playtest target is meant to curb the flood.

  • Mistake Of a Lifetime Award now says to complete 10 editor playtests. The update note does not clarify whether the tests must use different levels or what qualifies as a completed test, so check the current in-game wording.
  • Teacher still asks you to save a replay that beats a level you created. Testing alone does not meet that separate requirement.
  • The linked 2015 tutorial shows browser editor tools. It predates the Steam achievements and cannot prove either unlock.

Start with shapes and readable terrain properties

The shape-tool section shows the basic terrain pieces and the move toward custom polygon shapes. Pair it with the platform exercise above, where one fixed, interactive rectangle is enough to begin testing.

  1. 1:37 · Choose a basic shape

Rectangles, circles and triangles give you simple terrain pieces. Start with a rectangle so your first test has an obvious surface.

  2. 1:40 · Read the properties

The editor shows interactive and fixed settings beside the shape. These affect the physical scene; colour and decoration are separate choices.

  3. 2:05 · Leave custom geometry for later

The tutorial moves to the Polygon Tool. For a first exercise, get the simple platform supporting the rider before introducing a more complex outline.
