The short answer
Establish a camp, investigate Cathan’s journal and the swamp vault, then follow the quest to Velgar’s Rise. Make the Challenge Horn after gathering its materials, defeat Velgar and complete the Wise Old Man’s hand-in.
Before you start
- A claimed bed in a shelter near Bramblemead
- Food, water and repaired equipment for a multi-region journey
- Iron Pickaxe and Iron Logging Axe prepared before the horn’s material hunt
1. Establish the camp and investigate the keep
- Build the requested shelter and claim a bed. Speak to the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead Village, then bring him an Antler from a deer.
- Follow the investigation to the goblin keep, the Keep of Blue Flames. Find Cathan’s Journal near the chest at the top and read it.
- When Velgar attacks the keep, get out of the attack area. This encounter is not the final quest fight; the next clue points to a blue-flame door in Whispering Swamp.
2. Clear the blue-flame vault and report back
- Follow the swamp clue to the Dragonkin vault, Vertentis Kara. Work through its rooms and speak to Spitfoot inside.
- Return to the Wise Old Man in Bramblemead after that conversation. His next instruction sends you into Ghornfell.
- Investigate Velgar’s Rise in the Fractured Plains and speak to Cathan there. This supplies the Challenge Horn objective. Finish your metal-tool preparation before heading for its ingredients.
3. Gather the Challenge Horn materials
The tooth route passes the Garou skeleton camp on the western side of the Highlands. The sap route has hostile Garou near the tree. Plan them as separate outings if either trip leaves you short of supplies.
The checked Horn record lists the Smithing Anvil and the 1 Tooth, 1 Sap, 5 Bars recipe. Follow the recipe unlocked in your live quest if its station or ingredients differ; database unlock labels are not a substitute for the quest’s objective sequence.

4. Summon Velgar, then complete the hand-in
- Repair and restock before returning to Velgar’s Rise. Bring healing food, appropriate poison preparation and enough supplies for the encounter.
- Use the Challenge Horn at the dragonkin altar to begin the fight. Follow the separate Velgar preparation guide for encounter planning.
- After defeating Velgar, collect the quest head and speak to the Wise Old Man outside the lair. Finish the dialogue and confirm that Dragon Slayer has advanced to completion before leaving for Ashien’s Watch.
Check the missing step before repeating a dungeon
If the trail stops at the keep, confirm you read the Journal. If it stops at the swamp, finish Spitfoot’s conversation and return to the Wise Old Man. If the Horn cannot be made, check Cathan’s tower conversation and the displayed recipe.
