NPCs & quests

Most important characters usually stay at their regular locations, while some services use designated days. If a crossed-out purple brain appears when you try to write a story at the Writing Desk, players say you need more insanity; working on corpses is one reported way to raise it. No exact threshold is verified.

About this guide

NPC schedules come from a developer diary. The Writing Desk answer comes from a September 23 Steam exchange; Kingy has not measured the insanity requirement in-game.

SECTION 01

October 13 PC update 1.010

PC 1.010 reports Jack restored for bronze tools and the Village Boat event, plus a fix for placing the Central Districts Purge: Part II banner and the Doctor’s basement door. Support still lists the boat-related Jack issue on consoles. These are named publisher fixes; they do not establish a full NPC schedule or guaranteed recovery.

SECTION 02

Finding someone and using their service are different

The September 2 diary says important characters usually stay at their regular locations. Some associated mechanics still run on designated days: finding an NPC does not necessarily mean every service is available that day.

SECTION 03

Quests connect to the Town economy

The official overview links helping townsfolk to restoring homes and building businesses. Individual quest prerequisites and rewards are not published here, so this relationship is a guide to the announced loop, not a quest order.

SECTION 04

What the September 2 diary adds

The diary describes a mostly new cast with familiar faces returning, NPCs usually staying at regular locations, and some character mechanics using designated days. It also describes foreign traders and refugees seeking homes in the Town; exact retail schedules remain unmapped here.

SECTION 05

Story writing: crossed-out purple brain

A Steam player had the Writing Desk and equipment but saw a purple brain with a red cross when starting a story. Another player explained that story writing needs insanity and suggested working on corpses to raise it; the question author accepted that answer. Check your insanity state before spending more on desk equipment. The thread gives no required amount or guaranteed gain per corpse.

For the other side of this mechanic, the linked creator video has a chapter labeled “Insanity Guide & How to Reduce Insanity” at 7:03. Use the chapter to see that system discussed; the specific Writing Desk blocker above comes from the Steam exchange. Kingy could check the video’s chapter metadata, but its frames and captions were unavailable for review.

Metadata checked · footage interval not reviewed

The creator labels this 7:03–8:13 chapter as an Insanity guide. The story-writing prerequisite is sourced separately to the Steam discussion.

Source & footage context

Published September 21, 2026. Kingy checked the creator title, description and chapter times on September 23, but could not review the frames or automatic captions. Platform and build are unspecified.

SECTION 06

What still needs checking

The named NPC list, quest order, relationship systems, complete schedules, designated-day effects, story-writing threshold and reward table need to be mapped from the released game.

SECTION 07

Reported progression fixes

PC update 1.008 reports fixes for the Inflation/mercenary quest block and the main-story softlock caused by completing Linda’s Ball before the Plague Doctor’s Beautiful Dream. Update 1.009 moves the player clear after a nun-base upgrade to prevent getting stuck. These notes name specific blocks rather than a complete quest order or general recovery guarantee.
