WoW Forever lore: where the story begins

A spoiler-light introduction to Forever’s place in Warcraft history, the four new regions and the Skyborne’s divided future.

QUICK ANSWER

Blizzard places Forever after Warcraft III: Reforged — Forsaken Kingdom and before the original opening of Molten Core. Its first stories return to the Eastern Kingdoms and Kalimdor, following the recovery of Hyjal, forgotten Shen’dralar history, frontier communities and the Skyborne homeland.

A beginning between two familiar chapters #

The official introduction places World of Warcraft: Forever after the events of Warcraft III: Reforged — Forsaken Kingdom and before adventurers first entered Molten Core. That is the story’s starting position. It helps explain why a familiar part of Azeroth can have unfinished business worth following.

For a returning player, the useful question is what happened to these places after the wars that shaped them. For a newcomer, the four announced regions provide separate ways into that history. You do not need a complete chronology to understand a recovering forest, a forgotten settlement or a community facing an uncertain future.

Hyjal and Shen’dralas: what the past leaves behind #

Mount Hyjal takes up the aftermath of Archimonde’s defeat. Blizzard’s recap describes a journey through Darkwhisper Gorge and work to restore the land. The victory has already happened; the region’s story asks what comes afterward. Keep the outdoor area distinct from Hyjal Summit, the separately announced raid.

Shen’dralas opens a different historical thread between Mulgore and Desolace. Its story connects the Shen’dralar with Eldre’Thalas, Dire Maul and the region’s centaur tribes. These names describe the people and places behind the new adventure. They do not establish a required dungeon clear or a quest chain that must be completed before arrival.

Riverglades: the stories inside everyday survival #

Riverglades is described as a frontier of rivers, grasslands and trade routes. Its communities face hardship and old grudges. That setting makes room for stories about living in Azeroth: who can trade, who can settle and which conflicts a community carries with it. Those are reading themes suggested by the announced setting, rather than names of confirmed quests.

The scale is substantial: Blizzard announces more than 150 new quests across much of the mid-30s to mid-40s journey. That tells us the region has a major role in leveling. It does not reveal the sequence of its stories or guarantee that every character follows the same path.

Zephras and the Skyborne: one ancestry, different futures #

Zephras Isle introduces the Skyborne through an elemental starting experience with architecture inspired by Skywall. Blizzard describes a people with shared ancestry and different visions of the future. The Horde path embraces elemental traditions; the Alliance path follows the arcane legacy of the ancestors.

That division also appears in character choices. Skyborne select a faction at creation. Horde Skyborne can become Shamans, Alliance Skyborne can become Mages, and both can become Warriors, Hunters, Rogues or Druids. The announced starting story covers levels 1–12 and requires the relevant Skyborne access.
