Return to Valheim for 1.0 without losing your bearings

1.0 release context reviewed · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Your existing character and world can continue, but new 1.0 generation needs unexplored terrain and Iron Gate recommends a fresh world for the intended experience. Preserve the saves you care about, choose your world, check mods and settings, then use the boss-to-guide table below to resume. After Fader, use the Deep North route chooser and follow the clearly labeled researched progression only when you want spoilers.

Choose whether to continue or start fresh, protect your existing world, and prepare for Deep North without assuming unrechecked pre-1.0 mechanics still apply.

Optional supporting guide · Research-based · 1.0 release context reviewed 9 September 2026 · Version & review context

Before you start

  • Access to the character and world you intend to use. Keep the original available while deciding; this guide does not require replacing it.
  • Enough local storage to make a copy of the world and character data you care about before changing mods, settings or worlds.
  • A plan for whether you are returning alone or with a group. Each player should know which world, character and platform arrangement the group will use.

Choose a fresh world or a continuing world deliberately

Iron Gate says existing saves remain playable. You do not have to abandon a settled base, character or collection to play 1.0.

Deep North generation works properly in unexplored areas. If you want the cleanest intended world-generation experience, Iron Gate recommends starting a fresh world. If you continue an existing world, treat already explored terrain as established terrain and travel into genuinely unexplored regions for new generation instead of expecting it to rewrite the map behind you.

A practical choice is to keep the old world as a preserved home and start a fresh world when the group wants to discover the released content together. This is an editorial choice, not a requirement: pick the option that protects the progress you value and matches how your group wants to explore.

Make the return reversible before changing anything

Valheim 1.0 changed how worlds are saved by splitting world data into chunks. Before relying on an older backup tool or file-selection checklist, confirm that its instructions cover the current format. The official announcement does not provide platform-specific restore steps; use your platform’s documented tools and preserve the original data.

  1. Close the game cleanly, then use your platform’s documented backup tools to preserve the specific character and world data you intend to use. Where you can copy files locally, keep a dated copy separate from the active files. Do not assume cloud synchronization is an independent backup or that another platform can load the copy.
  2. Write down the world name, relevant world modifiers, the character you will bring and any mods in use. A screenshot of the world-selection and modifier screens is enough for a small group to compare their setup later.
  3. Start the first 1.0 session with a modest objective: confirm the world opens, the character has the expected inventory and base access still works. Avoid changing several variables at once if something is wrong.
  4. If the world opens incorrectly or the group is not seeing the same rules, stop and close the game. Preserve the failed upgraded save separately as well as the original backup. Check the platform’s restore instructions and version/mod compatibility before testing a restored copy; do not overwrite either preserved copy as an automatic repair step.

Check mods, modifiers and achievement expectations

Iron Gate does not guarantee mod compatibility with 1.0. Begin from a known setup: confirm whether the world is modded, check each mod’s own 1.0 status, and do not assume an old mod list can be carried into the release unchanged.

Achievement tracking begins with 1.0. Earlier boss kills do not automatically supply their past achievement progress, and the official FAQ describes conditions that can affect eligibility. Read the in-game achievement information before using console commands, changing world modifiers or planning an achievement run.

Crossplay is supported across platforms, but cross-save is a separate limitation. Confirm where the shared world and each player’s save live before asking a group to migrate. Do not promise that every platform pairing synchronizes saved data in the same way.

Resume progression without guessing at the new endgame

Find the last boss defeated in the world you are continuing, then open the matching guide. This is an index into the existing walkthrough, not a claim that every older mechanic has been revalidated for 1.0. If you are partway through that stage, follow its next-step links to the first unfinished task. If the character lacks the equipment or supplies listed there, rebuild those prerequisites before setting out.

  1. Restore the basics before following the selected route: use the shelter and repair guide for an early kit, or the selected stage’s own station and equipment instructions for later gear. Replenish meals and rest using the food and Rested guide.
  2. Use the route and portal checklist to confirm the outbound and return connections. Leave spare food and equipment at the home spawn, and read the equipment-recovery sequence before risking the active kit.
  3. After Fader, store the rewards and open the Deep North route chooser. It separates official biome access from the corroborated Winding Tunnels, key, Mörkhalla, invasion and Kall walkthrough.
  4. Read current in-game descriptions and menus before following an old placement path. 1.0 changed building menus, and upgradeable pockets mean an old inventory-screen instruction may no longer describe your character’s current capacity.
  5. Keep the first new expedition recoverable: leave a spare kit at the spawn, use a tested return route and bring back one category of newly discovered material at a time. Record a discrepancy with the guide’s wording instead of silently turning a research-based recommendation into a guaranteed mechanic.

When something goes wrong

I want new terrain but do not want to lose my old base.

Keep the existing world as a preserved world and start a fresh one for new exploration, or travel into genuinely unexplored terrain in the existing world. Iron Gate recommends a fresh world for the best generation experience; it does not say an old save is unusable.

My old mod setup does not work after the update.

Stop modifying the active save and preserve it separately from the original backup. Check each mod’s 1.0 status with its maintainer and your platform’s restore instructions before testing a copy with a compatible setup. Do not overwrite the original or failed upgraded copy while diagnosing it.

I expected an achievement for a boss I defeated before 1.0.

Achievement tracking starts with 1.0. Check the in-game requirement and the official FAQ before repeating progress or changing settings that could affect eligibility.

I reached Fader and need a next step.

Open the Deep North route chooser for world choice, scouting preparation and the current evidence boundary. The full dungeon-to-boss route is available as corroborated researched guidance; disputed names, consumption and reset behavior remain explicit.

My character has late-game gear, but this world has less progress.

Use the table for the world you are entering and inspect the linked prerequisites against the supplies and access actually available there. Start at the first unmet task instead of treating the character’s equipment as proof that the world’s route is ready.

Keep the result useful

Use the success check to finish this job, restock any reserves you used and return to the supporting journeys or your current boss objective.
