The Mountains · Survival journey

Enter the Mountains and find your first silver vein

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Brew frost-resistance mead before climbing, bring the Wishbone and an iron pickaxe, and scout in daylight from a sheltered foothill portal. Equip the Wishbone in a tall Mountain, follow its faster pulses, and dig to expose silver. Plan the downhill metal route before filling your inventory.

Brew frost mead, bring an iron pickaxe, survive wolves and drakes, and turn Wishbone signals into a recoverable silver route.

Before you start

  • The Wishbone secured after Bonemass, plus the repaired mace, shield, bow and armor you already use.
  • An iron pickaxe from the iron workshop; an antler or bronze pickaxe cannot mine silver or obsidian.
  • Finished frost-resistance mead, three fresh foods, a rested departure and a separate home recovery reserve.

Make frost protection before you need Mountain materials

At the Mead ketill, combine honey, thistle, bloodbags and a Greydwarf eye into frost-resistance base. Ferment it in shelter for two in-game days; one base yields six drinks. Each drink has a listed ten-minute protection window. Drink before entering freezing terrain and keep enough time and supply to return.

Our recommendation is to dry off beside a sheltered fire before ascending. If Freezing persists, retreat and check Wet, the equipped item and the active protection timer. Community descriptions disagree about frost protection while Wet; do not depend on an unresolved interaction to survive the climb.

For the first trip, reuse sausages, black soup and turnip stew. Bring the repaired Finewood bow and arrows for drakes, a mace for close encounters, the iron pickaxe, the Wishbone, and portal-building materials. Leave spare frost mead at home: a cape left on a grave cannot protect a recovering character.

Map a climb you can also descend

  1. Choose a Mountain approached from a manageable neighboring biome. Establish a sheltered foothill portal, verify its name and connection, and mark the climb and boat landing if using one.
  2. Climb by gentler slopes and pause on stable ledges to recover stamina. Keep a fighting platform in mind before advancing past a steep section. Avoid beginning a new route at night.
  3. Move the expedition forward in short scouting loops. Mark wolf encounters, drake nests, ruined cabins, possible silver areas and the return path. A higher portal can shorten repairs later, but keep it clear of nests, exposed ridgelines and the future boss arena.
  4. Search cleared ruin chests for onion seeds. Portal the first seeds home before continuing the expedition; losing the only seed stock delays every onion-based meal.

Stop mining to deal with approaching enemies

Frost Caves and Fenris equipment are optional for this silver-to-Moder route. Mark caves if found; neither clearing a cave nor assembling Fenris armor is a hidden requirement for the progression described here.

First Mountain encounters
ThreatPractical response
WolvesFight on ground where your swings connect. Keep them in front of you, preserve blocking or dodge stamina, and retreat before a second direction opens. Their quick attacks punish a depleted bar.
DrakesWatch the frost projectiles, sidestep, then fire when the drake steadies. Use ordinary damaging or fire arrows; frost is ineffective against them. Collect freeze glands and any trophy.
Stone golemsGive them space and route around them on the first silver trip. A mining hole with a golem above it is a poor place to learn the encounter.
Night travelReturn to the portal before the route becomes crowded with night enemies. A fresh day is preferable to carrying ore down an unscouted dark slope.

Read the Wishbone, then make a safe excavation

  1. Equip the Wishbone rather than leaving it in the pack. Traverse a tall Mountain and listen for its signal; move in several directions and mark where pulses become fastest and highest. If you use Megingjord, the Wishbone replaces it, so recheck carry weight.
  2. Clear the immediate area and dig at the strongest signal to expose the vein. Keep an exit ramp from the excavation instead of making a pit you can only leave by spending the last stamina on jumps.
  3. Use the iron pickaxe on the exposed silver. Collect a manageable load and cache the rest in a marked chest. Stop for enemies, mead renewal and repairs before the situation becomes urgent.
  4. Plan a physical descent to your smelter or boat. Silver ore and silver bars cannot use a normal wood portal. Use portals for repairs, food and ordinary supplies after caching restricted metal.
  5. Take the first load home and smelt it using coal. Keep the route open for later batches rather than trying to carry the whole vein in one risky trip.

When something goes wrong

The Wishbone never pings.

Equip it and try a larger, taller Mountain. Small low hills may not contain suitable silver terrain. A silent Wishbone is not a reason to dig every patch of snow.

My pickaxe says the vein is too hard.

Use the iron pickaxe, not the antler or bronze model. Return to the iron guide if you skipped that tool when spending your first bars.

I died with every frost mead on my grave.

Brew a new batch at the safe base before climbing again. Eat, rest, take spare equipment, recover with the marked route and leave before sorting the recovered inventory.

A loaded cart cannot get down the route safely.

Cache ore and make smaller walking loads to the foothill. Only use a cart after preparing and testing a suitable path; cliffs are not a dependable cargo route.
