Clear Frost Caves and collect Fenris materials

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Scout Mountain rock faces for blue-icicle cave entrances, secure a return portal outside, then clear one branch at a time. Fight away from shafts and step out of Cultist flame bursts. Harvest hanging Fenris hair and altar claws; a Cultist trophy is a chance drop. Bank each useful load and search another cave when the first is exhausted. This is an optional equipment route, separate from Hildir’s Howling Caverns quest.

Find ordinary Mountain caves, handle bats, Ulvs and fire-wielding Cultists, harvest hair and claws, and return with a recoverable route.

Before you start

  • Complete Mountain entry preparation: frost protection, three current foods, Rested, healing mead and a marked descent. An upgraded iron-era combat kit is a reasonable starting recommendation; use your familiar later kit if returning after progression.
  • A repaired melee weapon, shield if your weapon allows it, bow and physical-damage arrows. Pack light for pickups and keep food and frost resistance in a home recovery chest.
  • Hammer, external portal materials and a usable home portal connection. Keep the crafting workshop at home; the cave expedition supplies it.

Prepare for the approach and the trip after a death

  1. Follow the meal and Rested routine. Sausages, Black soup and Turnip stew are a practical iron-era mix; the Mountain kitchen offers later choices. Eat before climbing and carry replacement portions.
  2. Equip frost-resistance armor or drink finished Frost resistance mead before the cold ascent. Keep a spare drink in the expedition pack and more at home: protection on the armor in your tombstone cannot protect the respawned character.
  3. Clear a small staging area away from the cave mouth, build and test the portal in both directions, and mark the cave. Retain enough protection for the exterior after a long clear. A warm interior is not proof that you can descend without frost protection.
  4. Check the livestock roof and enclosed shelter before the expedition. The default event reference lists Bat and Bonemass deaths as the bat-raid conditions; world settings differ. Do not assume careful personal avoidance prevents every bat death or makes an open pen safe.

Search the slopes, then label the cave correctly

Look for an entrance beneath a jagged rock formation with large blue icicles. Traverse one visible band of a mountain face before climbing to the next, and revisit obscured slopes in clearer daylight. If the mountain yields no entrance, mark the searched area and move to another Mountain rather than repeating the same loop indefinitely.

An ordinary Frost Cave does not require Hildir’s quest. If you are following a Hildir marker to Howling Caverns, use that separate Geirrhafa and silver-chest guide: its quest fight and chest return are additional commitments.

On a world explored before Frost Caves were introduced, previously generated terrain may lack them. Iron Gate says new fixed locations appear in previously unexplored areas, including a radius around earlier visits. Search farther beyond the old travel corridor; fog on the map is not a guarantee that terrain was never generated.

Make the route back obvious before moving deeper

  1. Pause inside the entrance and identify a level space for the first fight. Clear the immediate threats before sorting inventory or breaking furnishings.
  2. Choose one branch and finish it before returning to a known junction. Use simple notes such as “left stair cleared; right door unopened” if the layout becomes confusing. Look back at each turn so the return view is familiar.
  3. Break obstructing ice carefully with a weapon where needed. Stop at changes in floor height and look for ledges or stairs; do not run after a bat across a dark opening.
  4. Use light to inspect alcoves and the space behind red curtains before entering. Draw a visible enemy toward cleared floor, then reassess the room instead of smashing every object while its occupants are active.
  5. Leave whenever health, food duration or equipment durability makes another fight doubtful. Walk back through the cleared branch and use the actual dungeon exit before traveling through the outside portal.

Respond to the enemy instead of chasing it

Bring physical arrows for controlled pulls and openings. Cultists are immune to fire, so Fire arrows are not the answer to their flame attack. A bow is useful where sight lines permit; it does not guarantee enough space to shoot an advancing enemy.

If you already farm Plains barley, Fire resistance barley wine is useful preparation. It is not an early-Mountain prerequisite, and frost mead does not replace it. Without fire resistance, prioritize avoiding the blast and leave if repeated burns outpace your recovery.

Do not turn a rare deep-lake Stone golem into a required fight for this trip. Backtrack if it blocks a dangerous approach; another cave is an acceptable way to finish the material target.

Suggested responses for a prepared iron-era explorer
ThreatWhat to doWhat makes it worse
BatsStand on level ground, face the approach and time a short melee swing as a bat lunges. Clear the air before checking a ledge.Chasing fly-bys toward a shaft or swinging until stamina is empty.
UlvsDraw a small fight onto known floor. Dodge or use your practiced shield timing, then retaliate briefly. Keep the rest of the pack in view.Opening another room while a close attacker is still active. Fire is a poor main damage choice against their resistance.
CultistsWhen the flame windup begins, move out of the forward blast; use lateral room on cleared ground. After it finishes, take a short opening and watch for follow-up claws.Holding a shield against the flame burst: the reference says it cannot be blocked and can pass through walls. A doorway is not fireproof cover.

Harvest hair and claws; check Cultist drops separately

Clear the altar guards before harvesting. If hair is too high for an ordinary swing, try shooting the hanging material from stable ground and check below for drops; do not jump into a shaft for it. Red curtains supply Red jute, a different resource, so inspect behind them for hair rather than counting the curtain itself as armor material.

Treat the cave as a finite harvest and mark what you actually collected. Do not plan a timed hair farm or wait in an emptied Cultist room: the documented cave Cultist spawns are one-time. Make another search trip if the banked total is short. There is no guaranteed number of caves that produces a full set or the trophy.

Three distinct supplies for the equipment route
SupplyWhere to collect itKeep it for
Fenris hairPick up bundles on altars and reachable hanging clumps. Break the matted hair hangings with a weapon, then collect what falls.Coat and leggings first if the hood trophy is missing; reserve the remaining set budget.
Fenris clawPick up the claw offerings on altar pedestals. These are not a reward for repeatedly killing outdoor Fenrings. The optional Flesh rippers; leave six reserved before spending claws on decoration.
Cultist trophyCheck the ground after each Cultist kill. It is a chance drop, not a guaranteed cave reward. One hood for each player who wants the full set. Ulv or Fenring trophies cannot substitute.

Bank the finds and keep the failed attempt recoverable

If a cave contains a Moder Vegvisir, interact with it and retain the marker for the core Mountain journey. Finding that marker is useful even when the equipment haul is incomplete.

  1. Return hair, claws and the trophy through your ordinary portal to labeled storage. These materials are portal compatible. If incidental metal salvage blocks travel, separate it into an outside chest for a later physical haul using the cargo guide.
  2. Count the stored materials against the Fenris crafting budget, including what other players need. Leave the first trophy at home before searching for more hair.
  3. If you die, eat and take the reserve frost mead and familiar spare equipment before climbing. Re-enter by the mapped branch; draw enemies away from the tombstone if possible, collect the equipment, and equip it before deciding whether to continue.
  4. If the outside portal or bed was destroyed, restore access first. Rebuild and claim the replacement bed through the spawn-point checklist. Do not repeat an unprotected climb while the recovery route remains broken.

When something goes wrong

I keep getting fangs instead of Fenris hair.

Harvest the cave’s hair hangings and altar bundles. Current material references do not support the old advice to farm Ulv or outdoor Fenring kills for hair or claws.

I have cleared several caves without a Cultist trophy.

The trophy is a chance drop. Make the coat or leggings if useful, bank the hood’s remaining materials, and search a new cave rather than waiting for the cleared Cultists to return.

The fire attack hits through my shield or the doorway.

Move out of the forward flame burst instead of blocking it. Fight where you have lateral space, and retreat to replenish health before another attempt.

The portal refuses my return load.

Hair, claws and Cultist trophies can pass. Inspect for incidental Iron or Bronze salvage, store restricted cargo safely outside and return for it by a planned transport route.
