Before you start
- A working shelter and spawn bed, hammer, workbench and renewable food and Rested.
- Wood for an initial perimeter. A hoe, stone and a pickaxe are needed only for the terrain option; Eikthyr supplies the first pickaxe.
- For stone construction, use the first-iron route and reserve two iron for a Stonecutter.
Lay out the base around what you must keep
The layout below is our recommendation, not a tested fortress blueprint. Start with a perimeter you can finish and inspect in one circuit. A huge unfinished boundary leaves more approaches to defend.
- Put the bed, meal chest and spare equipment in a sheltered inner room. Keep a hammer and ordinary rebuilding wood there; keep a second small recovery cache on the approach from the Sacrificial Stones if home is far away.
- Leave a clear walking strip between the outer boundary and the house, pens and storage. Do not use an animal-pen wall as the settlement’s only outer defense.
- Choose an outside patch for fighting where you can move without trampling through the workshop or herd. Connect it to a gate and a separate escape route.
- Walk the route from the dock or resource trail with a cart before enclosing it. Keep gates, stairs and the future trench crossing wide enough for the actual load. See cargo and storage planning.
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Hammer | 3 Wood + 2 Stone | Inventory |
| 1 × Workbench | 10 Wood | Hammer; no station required |
| 1 × Chest | 10 Wood | Hammer; within workbench range |
Finish a wooden boundary before adding a second layer
Stakewalls are barriers; they do not damage enemies on contact like Sharp stakes. This plan does not require traps. Any built wall or gate can be attacked, so leave yourself a way to respond before it breaks.
- Gather ordinary wood from the Meadows wood route. Equip the hammer, open the building menu and choose Stakewall near a workbench. Place adjoining sections around the planned boundary, checking slopes for gaps.
- Use a Wood gate at the hauling entrance. One gate costs twelve wood; each Stakewall section costs four. Count the actual sections in your layout, then add the gate cost and a rebuilding reserve rather than relying on a universal base budget.
- Close the gate and inspect the exterior from ground level. Keep workstation access on the inside. Select the hammer’s repair option and repair damaged pieces when it is safe; building repairs consume stamina but no materials.
- Keep the bedroom and animal shelters structurally supported and roofed. If a new roof part collapses immediately, inspect its support colors and add a direct support to the ground before extending farther.
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Stakewall | 4 Wood | Hammer; within workbench range |
| 1 × Wood gate | 12 Wood | Hammer; within workbench range |

Add terrain separation or stone where it solves an actual weakness
Earth barriers cannot be dug through by ordinary creatures. They can interrupt ground approaches; they do not make the area safe from fliers, projectiles or attacks reaching over an edge. A log troll can hit farther than its feet, and an unarmed troll can throw rocks. Keep the workshop and pens back from the lip instead of building directly against it.
- Work in daylight after clearing nearby threats. Mark a strip outside the buildings; keep an exit from the excavation and avoid cutting beneath supports.
- For a trench, dig with the pickaxe and inspect the full circuit for gentle ramps, shallow shore approaches and forgotten crossings. If the site floods or cannot form a useful barrier, move the line inland or use raised earth there.
- For raised earth, equip the hoe and select Raise ground in its menu. Keep a workbench nearby and stone in the inventory; each action uses two stone. Work in short sections and keep a clear route through your own construction.
- Treat every retained bridge or gate as a defended entrance. A gap you can jump may obstruct ordinary foot enemies, but it also blocks a cart. Do not accidentally isolate the only escape route.
- After obtaining iron, build a Stonecutter near the section being replaced. Add supported stone walls before removing essential inner shelter. Keep the cutter available: stone repairs require it too. Replace failed approaches and exposed foundations first rather than spending all your iron on appearance.
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Hoe | 5 Wood + 2 Stone | Workbench level 1 |
| 1 × Antler pickaxe | 10 Wood + 1 Hard antler | Workbench level 1 |
| 1 × Stonecutter | 10 Wood + 2 Iron + 4 Stone | Hammer; within workbench range |
| 1 × Stone wall 4x2 | 6 Stone | Hammer; within stonecutter range |

Prevent spawns inside the boundary
The pre-1.0 reference describes nearby spawn suppression from qualifying player-base objects, including event spawns, with a 20-metre radius for a basic workbench; use its visible placement circle as a planning aid and overlap coverage across the enclosed ground. A perimeter wall alone is not a dependable suppression plan. The 1.0 notes changed which pieces have player-base tags but do not list them; the old qualifying-piece list and coverage need revalidation.
Walk the corners, dock, farm edges and any newly extended area with the hammer. Protect the coverage objects inside the boundary and replace broken ones. Do not assume upgraded station reach is a dependable larger exclusion zone; the reference documents a reload limitation.
This does not deactivate physical spawners such as a Greydwarf nest. Do not enclose an active spawner and expect another workbench to solve it. Clear the hazard using equipment appropriate to that biome, or choose a different site.

Keep the food loop recoverable
Flying enemies can bypass an open pen. Give boars and chickens a closed shelter with a roof and secure door; inspect openings near the eaves. Bats remaining after their raid can still attack, so leave livestock enclosed until the area is checked.
- Keep breeding animals apart from the outer combat area. Use the existing boar pen and chicken shelter instructions for feeding, reproduction and fire placement.
- Store a seed reserve and spare eggs separately from the active field, everyday pantry and exposed pen. Keep crop beds outdoors with the conditions in the farming guide; do not roof a field as if it were a chicken house.
- Keep a smaller independent breeding reserve if losing the main herd would halt progression. Avoid moving every animal or planting every seed into a single new expansion at once.
- Before the next boss expedition or Hildir chest hand-in, refill the recovery chest, repair the boundary and review the raid response.

Make one practical readiness check
- Eat, repair and put on the equipment you normally use at home. Walk from the bed to the gate, outside fighting area and escape route without opening livestock pens.
- Open and close each gate from both sides. Inspect the dock and every slope for an unplanned approach, then check workstation coverage where repairs will be needed.
- Verify the recovery chest still holds food, protection, a weapon and building supplies. If you use a backup portal, test the actual connection in both directions.
- Choose one weakness to fix before the next progression step. A finished route with accessible supplies is more useful than an unfinished outer wall.

| 1 × Portal | 20 Fine wood + 10 Greydwarf eye + 2 Surtling core | Hammer; within workbench range |

Enemies appear inside the walls.
Inspect spawn-suppression coverage, including destroyed workbenches and recent expansions. Distinguish an uncovered spawn location from an enemy entering through a gap or an active physical spawner.
A troll hits the house despite the trench.
Its reach or thrown rocks may cross the separation. Move vulnerable structures farther inside and engage from the outside fighting area; deepening the same narrow trench alone may not help.
I cannot repair the stone section.
Restore or move a Stonecutter within range. A workbench alone does not provide stone repair access.
The enclosure is safe but I cannot haul through it.
Rework the designated entrance and crossing with a partially loaded cart. Retain a defendable gate instead of leaving an accidental permanent ramp elsewhere.
