Tame and breed boars for food and leather

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Lure two Meadows boars into a prepared pen, close it, and drop suitable food within reach. Remove nearby fire and stay close enough for the area to remain active without keeping them alarmed. Once both are tame, keep them fed and near one another. Wait for offspring to mature, then butcher surplus adults while preserving two breeders.

Build a practical pen, calm and feed two wild boars, produce a first piglet, and harvest adults while preserving the herd.

Before you start

  • A defended Meadows base, hammer, workbench, wood, and enough food to survive a short chase.
  • Raspberries, blueberries, red mushrooms, carrots, turnips or onions to drop as feed.
  • A forge and smelted tin for the Butcher knife before the harvesting step; taming itself can start earlier.

Build the capture pen before starting the chase

An ordinary pair is enough to learn the loop. A starred animal is worth preserving if safely available, but delaying all farming for a rare spawn is unnecessary. Keep the pen inside a larger defended area; wooden walls alone do not protect it from every raid.

  1. Use the ordinary wood walls and a gate from basic shelter construction to enclose level ground within workbench range. Leave room for adults to turn, reach feed and approach one another.
  2. Add a second gate or small entry compartment so opening one entrance does not release the whole herd. Keep a clear escape route over or through the enclosure.
  3. Move the capture area away from campfires, standing torches and the kitchen. Put away the hand torch too.
  4. Approach one wild boar until it pursues you, lead it through the open entrance, leave the pen and close the gate. Repeat for a second boar; repair damage between attempts.

Make taming progress visible

  1. Drop a modest stack of accepted feed on reachable ground inside the pen. Use surplus raspberries or red mushrooms initially, then farmed vegetables. Yellow mushrooms and cooked meals do not replace those foods.
  2. Withdraw from their sight and let the red alert disappear. Work nearby on storage or repairs while the pen remains active; a distant portal trip pauses this part of the process.
  3. Look for yellow taming hearts without repeatedly walking up to frighten the boars. Replenish reachable food when necessary and protect the pen from wandering enemies.
  4. Wait until each adult is explicitly tame before treating the pair as breeding stock. The reference lists about 30 uninterrupted minutes for taming; interruptions extend the wait.

Keep the breeding pair productive

Two fed, calm tame adults need to be close together. The community reference lists a partner within three meters and fewer than five boars, including piglets, within ten meters for another breeding check. An enormous pen with adults at opposite ends can fail just as a crowded small pen can.

After a piglet appears, leave it protected until it becomes an adult. Keep two adult breeders in the original compartment and move surplus adults to a separate harvesting section. Naming the breeders is a useful reminder, not protection from the knife.

  1. Feed from the food-surplus chest, leaving seed vegetables untouched.
  2. Check the pair while doing nearby base work. Pink hearts indicate successful breeding progress; do not expect every check to produce an immediate piglet.
  3. When crowding stops production, harvest surplus adults or move them beyond the breeding group’s local area. Another thin wall inside the same crowded footprint does not reset the density check.

Turn surplus adults into supplies

  1. Craft the Butcher knife at the forge. Close the breeder compartment and approach only the surplus adult chosen for slaughter.
  2. Use the knife and collect raw Boar meat and Leather scraps. Put scraps into the equipment chest and divide meat by the recipes you intend to make.
  3. For immediate food, roast meat on a Cooking station over a fueled fire and collect it before burning. With a Cauldron and hive honey, craft Boar jerky instead.
  4. Keep raw meat for Turnip stew or Sausages after the Spice rack unlocks cauldron level 2. Sausages also need Swamp Draugr entrails and gathered thistle; the herd supplies only the boar ingredient.

When something goes wrong

A boar stays frightened or never eats.

Check nearby fire, your torch, hostile creatures and your own proximity. Drop an accepted food where the boar can physically reach it, then withdraw from view.

Tame adults remain fed but do not produce piglets.

Bring the adults closer, reduce the nearby adult-and-piglet population, and stay in the active area. Food in a chest does not feed them.

The ordinary weapon will not slaughter a tame animal.

Use the Butcher knife. It works without changing the friendly-fire setting; isolate the intended animal first.

A breeder escaped or the herd was killed.

Secure the pen before replacement. Lure another wild adult for taming if no breeding pair survives, and keep cooking from stored meat while it matures.
