Before you start
- A protected base and storage from the shelter journey.
- Bronze, core wood and a forge through smelting and bronze; later seeds require reaching their source biome.
- A hammer, wood for a boundary and gate, and a hoe if you want to level the plot.
Start with a plot you can protect
- Craft the Cultivator. Clear a small patch inside your defended Meadows base, leaving the growing area open to the sky.
- Use its Cultivate mode on the soil. Switch to the crop in its build menu and plant a few test seeds with generous gaps from other plants, trees, rocks and the boundary.
- Read the plant status after placement. Expand the same layout only when the test plants remain Healthy; a roofed greenhouse does not solve crop protection.
- Place the storage chest outside the growing rows. Keep access wide enough to harvest and repair the perimeter without trampling through a crowded work area.
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Cultivator | 5 Core wood + 5 Bronze | Forge level 1 |
| 1 × Hoe | 5 Wood + 2 Stone | Workbench level 1 |
| 1 × Chest | 10 Wood | Hammer; within workbench range |

Find why the vegetable plot is failing
Stop planting the remaining seed stack until you have checked one affected plant. This is the accepted pre-1.0 carrot, turnip and onion growing route; it does not establish new 1.0 crop rules. Read the plant’s actual status rather than treating every slow harvest as the same problem.
- If the plant needs more room or open sky, look for nearby plants, boundary pieces, trees, rocks and overhead construction. Remove the specific obstruction where practical and check the status again. Use wider gaps for the next planting rather than spending the reserve on the same crowded layout.
- If the soil or environment is wrong, inspect the ground and the biome at that plant, including any border through the field. Cultivate suitable ground with the Cultivator. Use the known Meadows plot for this vegetable route when the current site is unsuitable; check the crop and biome reference before replanting.
- If a plant remains healthy but is not ready to harvest, leave it growing and use stored or gathered food meanwhile. Do not pull up the healthy crop just because the first visit produced no harvest. Recheck its status on the next farming visit.
- If enemies destroyed the plot, clear the immediate threat and repair its boundary before using replacement seeds. Keep the next planting small enough to protect. Changing the spacing alone will not solve an attacked field.
- After correcting the cause, follow the small test-plot sequence. Expand only after the test plants remain healthy. If plants are already lost, use the seed-stock recovery; this diagnosis does not promise that changing the field restores a dead plant.
- Barley, flax, Jotun puffs and Magecaps need their own farm route. Use the later-farm links instead of applying this Meadows vegetable plan to every crop.

Bring new crops home before expanding the farm
Leave ordinary food in reserve while the first crop grows. Seed hunting is part of the appropriate biome expedition: use Swamp preparation or Mountain entry before searching dangerous ground.
| Crop | First supply | Where this route grows it |
|---|---|---|
| Carrot | Collect wild carrot seeds in the Black Forest; bring the first find home. | Meadows. Black Forest and Plains also support it. |
| Turnip | Look for yellow-flowered seed plants while scouting the Swamp; do not spend the only harvest. | Meadows. Unlike carrots, turnips can also grow in the Swamp. |
| Onion | Search Mountain ruin chests once your frost-protected route is established. | Meadows. Finding a seed in the Mountains does not make the Mountains a suitable garden. |

Budget for two harvests, not one
For each of these three vegetables, planting one seed produces one vegetable at baseline. Planting that vegetable with the matching Seed-carrot, Seed-turnip or Seed-onion option instead produces a seed plant that later yields three seeds. Harvesting an ordinary food crop does not also refund its seed.
Example reserve budget: from nine vegetables, earmark three for seed plants and six for cooking. Those three seed plants can later return nine seeds for the next food planting. This is a planning example before bonuses or losses, not nine immediately plantable vegetables from one seed.
- During startup, multiply the scarce crop instead of cooking the first harvest. Keep growing until both the next planting and a backup fit in storage.
- Split the mature harvest into seed vegetables, food ingredients and a reserve before visiting the kitchen. Keep seed rows visually separate from food rows.
- After harvesting seed plants, replant the planned crop area and retain spare seeds. Count the actual yield; damaged plants or world modifiers can change the budget.
- Restock the reserve first after a loss. Reduce meal production temporarily instead of feeding the last vegetables to livestock.

Recover after losing seeds or cooking the last harvest
Check what remains before making another dangerous seed expedition. A carrot, turnip or onion crop has a separate seed-producing planting cycle; an ordinary vegetable harvest does not also return its seed. The recovery below uses that accepted pre-1.0 cycle.
- Check the reserve chest, kitchen ingredients and surviving field. Put remaining seeds and uncooked vegetables aside before cooking or feeding animals. Use other ready food while you rebuild this crop.
- If spare seeds remain, use a small corrected plot and reserve its first vegetable harvest for propagation. If uncooked vegetables remain but the seed stack is empty, select the matching Seed-carrot, Seed-turnip or Seed-onion planting option. Follow the two-harvest seed budget before returning any of the crop to the kitchen.
- If healthy crops are still growing, wait for their harvest and reserve it for propagation before planning another seed hunt. Only if no seeds, uncooked vegetables or surviving crop remain, return to the original seed source: Black Forest carrot plants, Swamp turnip seed plants or Mountain onion-seed chests. Use the linked biome preparation first. Cooked meals do not replace planting stock, and another seed search is not a guaranteed quick find.
- Bring replacement stock home before extending that expedition. Keep part of the recovered supply in separate storage where possible, and plant only after the cause of the earlier loss is addressed.
- Complete both the vegetable and seed harvests, then split the actual yield into the next planting, a separate loss reserve and cooking surplus. Resume meal production only once the first two allocations are protected. The loop is restored when a meal no longer consumes the next planting.

Give each crop a finished meal and a storage job
Carrot soup uses red mushrooms gathered in Meadows or Black Forest. Turnip stew uses raw boar meat; raise a small boar herd if hunting is becoming the bottleneck. Onion soup needs only surplus onions, while wolf skewers combine onions with Mountain meat and red mushrooms.
Build the tin Cauldron over a working fire. Turnip stew and onion soup need level 2 from the Spice rack; wolf skewers need the later Butcher’s table as well. The recipe cards show the complete station costs. Keep a chest for seed reserves, one for raw cooking supplies and one for ready expedition meals. Do not let convenient kitchen storage erase the distinction.
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Cauldron | 10 Tin | Hammer; within forge range |
| 1 × Spice rack | 3 Dandelion + 2 Carrot + 5 Mushroom + 3 Thistle + 3 Turnip | Workbench; within cauldron range |
| 1 × Butcher's table | 2 Ancient bark + 4 Core wood + 4 Fine wood + 2 Silver | Hammer; within workbench and cauldron range |
| 1 × Carrot soup | 3 Carrot + 1 Mushroom | Cauldron level 1 |
| 1 × Turnip stew | 1 Boar meat + 3 Turnip | Cauldron level 2 |
| 1 × Onion soup | 3 Onion | Cauldron level 2 |
| 1 × Wolf skewer | 1 Wolf meat + 2 Mushroom + 1 Onion | Cauldron level 3 |

Add later farms without moving the whole kitchen
- Use the Plains farm journey for barley and flax. Keep their first harvest for planting before processing flour or thread.
- Use the Mistlands food and equipment journey for a protected Jotun puff and Magecap plot. Ordinary vegetables and those mushrooms do not share every biome requirement.
- Keep routine farm rations separate from the stronger three-food loadout for your next expedition. Store spare recovery meals beside the home portal using the hauling and storage route.
- A later Bog Witch visit can unlock the scythe for larger harvests. It is optional; hand harvesting completes this loop.
You are ready when…
0 of 3 ready
Saved in this browserWhen something goes wrong
Plants need more room or open sky.
Use the plant-status diagnosis before spending more seeds. Check the specific obstruction and confirm the status after changing it.
Plants report the wrong environment or uncultivated soil.
Check the biome at the actual plant, especially across a border, and cultivate the ground. Restart in the known Meadows plot if the location is unsuitable.
The harvest is healthy but there are no seeds.
Follow the seed-stock recovery: check spare seeds and uncooked vegetables before returning to the original seed source.
A raid destroyed the growing supply.
Clear the attackers and repair the boundary before replanting from storage. Keep the new plot smaller until protection is reliable.
