The Plains · Survival journey

Build a Plains farm, better meals and padded equipment

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Plant barley and flax on protected cultivated Plains ground and reserve enough harvest to replant. Use the artisan-table machines to make flour, linen thread and Black metal. Craft padded armor with iron and linen, make a black-metal sword at forge level 4, and bake bread and lox pies from preparations made at the food preparation table.

Grow barley and flax, process Black metal, linen and flour, and build the exact workshop and food chains needed for Yagluth and the Mistlands.

Research-based guide · Pre-1.0 mechanics reference; 1.0 compatibility is not yet verified · Version & review context

Before you start

  • Barley, flax and an artisan table from the first Plains trip.
  • A cultivator, a defensible Plains plot and a portal to the main base.
  • An iron supply, ordinary forge and smelter, coal, fine wood, leather scraps and Surtling cores.

Create a farm that can survive losing a harvest

  1. Choose a manageable Plains plot away from an active village or tar pit. Build a perimeter and a retreat shelter before moving the only crop stock there. A wall alone does not stop flying enemies.
  2. Cultivate the ground and plant the barley and flax themselves with the cultivator. Both grow in the Plains; cultivated Meadows soil is not enough.
  3. Check plant status after planting. Leave space between plants and nearby structures, and check the biome at border plots rather than judging it by the grass color.
  4. Harvest when mature, replant part and store a reserve elsewhere. The baseline reference return is two crops from one planted crop; do not budget the next run around bonus yields.

Keep the three processing branches separate

Build these through the hammer within artisan-table range. The windmill and spinning wheel together use 40 iron nails: four crafts of the existing ten-nail recipe, consuming four iron. The furnace uses a further ten iron. Fine wood can come from Meadows birch or oak using your bronze axe or better; leather scraps come from boars, and Burial Chambers remain a source of Surtling cores.

Return to the crypt-hauling route if you need iron. A new metal does not replace this material: padded armor and the kitchen still use iron.

Make a concrete armor and weapon set

A base padded helmet, cuirass and greaves use 30 iron and 55 linen thread together. Keep your existing Mountain cape. The helmet needs forge level 1 and the other two pieces level 2; these are base crafting costs, not a fully upgraded set.

For the selected melee route, craft a black-metal sword. The forge must reach level 4: connect anvils, a forge cooler and a forge toolrack to the base forge, then check the displayed level. The same forge can make and repair the black-metal axe needed for the next biome. Touch each material to discover its recipe.

Carry your practiced shield and bow alongside the sword. Test ordinary Plains encounters with food and a retreat route before treating the new equipment as permission to start Yagluth. If fights repeatedly exhaust your health or stamina, fix that problem before consuming the offerings.

Bake food you can actually eat

  1. Build a sheltered food preparation table near a workbench and a stone oven within artisan-table range. Put the oven on stable ground or supported stone and leave a way for smoke to escape.
  2. Mill surplus barley. At the preparation table, ten flour makes two Bread dough; a pie preparation uses two raw Lox meat, two cloudberries and four flour.
  3. Hunt Lox separately from a crop run. Isolate one on known ground, use the bow or short melee openings, and leave room for its bite and stomp. Save the raw meat for pies instead of cooking it first.
  4. Feed wood into the lower oven input and dough or unbaked pie into the food input. Collect the finished food when ready: the reference gives roughly 50 seconds, with burning at roughly 100. Stay nearby for the first batch.
  5. Use Lox meat pie and the existing Wolf skewer as two health foods, with Bread as the stamina food. Make extra servings for renewal and the recovery chest.

Extend the cauldron for an alternative stamina meal

Add Pots and pans near the cauldron alongside the Spice rack and Butcher's table to reach level 4. This opens Blood pudding as an alternative to bread: collect bloodbags from Swamp leeches, thistle in the Black Forest or Swamp, and barley flour from the windmill. Approach leeches from land rather than swimming for this supply.

The cauldron, food preparation table and Mead ketill have different jobs. Bread dough and pie preparations belong at the preparation table; the fire-resistance base in the next guide belongs at the Mead ketill. Older guides that send all these recipes to the cauldron are outdated.

When something goes wrong

The crop says it cannot grow.

Confirm Plains ground, cultivated soil and space around each plant. Preserve your remaining stock while correcting the plot instead of planting every last crop there.

I have Black metal but cannot make padded armor.

Padded armor requires iron and linen thread. Return to the iron supply and spinning wheel; the metal bars cannot substitute for one another.

The sword recipe is missing or repairs fail.

Use forge level 4, achieved here with anvils, cooler and toolrack, and pick up linen thread, Black metal and fine wood. A remote basic forge cannot repair this sword.

There is no bread recipe in my cauldron.

Make dough at the food preparation table, then bake it in the stone oven. The oven also needs wood fuel; do not wait until finished food becomes coal.
