The Plains · Survival journey

Enter the Plains and bring home the first crops

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Use Moder's Dragon tears for an artisan table, then scout the Plains from a tested portal in a safer neighboring biome. Bring your Mountain equipment, three foods and a bow. Return with barley and flax for a protected Plains farm; reserve Black metal scrap for a physical haul.

Turn Moder's reward into an artisan table, scout a safe Plains edge, and recover barley and flax without committing to a whole village.

Research-based guide · Pre-1.0 mechanics reference; 1.0 compatibility is not yet verified · Version & review context

Before you start

  • Moder defeated and Dragon tears collected through the Mountain boss journey.
  • Repaired Mountain armor, your practiced melee weapon and shield, bow and arrows, three foods and Rested status.
  • A tested return portal, spare food and equipment at home, and a boat or land route for restricted metal.

Make the reward useful before the next expedition

Build an artisan table with two Dragon tears and ten wood. It enables the blast furnace, windmill and spinning wheel used in the next guide. These are separate hammer-built structures; interacting with the table does not turn scrap into bars or crops into food.

Keep the remaining tears in storage. You can put the processing workshop at your main base and use a small Plains plot for farming. Move station materials deliberately: iron for a remote blast furnace still needs a physical journey under normal portal rules.

Choose a return route before approaching a village

  1. Land in a known neighboring Meadows or Black Forest area when possible. Deathsquitos can reach boats along a Plains shore; a beach is not automatically a safe dock.
  2. Build and test the portal with the matching tag, mark the landing and leave recovery supplies on the home side. Scout in daylight with room to withdraw.
  3. Walk the boundary and mark villages, crop patches and tar pits from outside their immediate danger. Pick cloudberries along a clear return route.
  4. Take short scouting loops. Bring the first crop finds home before looking for a second village; a full camp clear is a separate operation.

Know what can interrupt the return

These responses are a cautious route choice. Keep your strongest available food active even while collecting crops; harvesting does not suspend enemy attacks.

First Plains encounters
ThreatPractical response
DeathsquitoWatch its approach. Shoot it when spotted early, or face it with a prepared block and counterattack. Do not rely on a weak shield or an empty stamina bar.
Fuling group or berserkerUse your bow to draw a manageable fight onto already-cleared ground. Retreat if a group or starred enemy exceeds the kit you brought.
Fuling shamanExpect fireballs and barriers on nearby allies. Keep a clear firing lane and address the shaman before pushing through protected defenders.
Lox or tar-pit GrowthsGive them room on the first crop trip. Growth projectiles poison and slow; a Lox can punish a close approach with a bite or stomp.

Collect crops and split the return load

  1. Inspect a village from cover. Reduce its defenders before entering the planted ground; if the approach deteriorates, leave and return with supplies.
  2. Harvest barley and flax when the area is controlled. A village may have only one crop, so mark which you found and continue scouting on another trip if needed.
  3. Use the portal for the crops and cloudberries. Keep a named reserve of each crop for planting; do not feed the entire first harvest into a machine.
  4. Collect Black metal scrap from defeated Fulings or Plains chests, but cache it by the marked transport route. Scrap and bars cannot use a normal wood portal.

When something goes wrong

The machines are missing after I built the table.

Check the hammer crafting menu while within artisan-table range, and pick up every listed ingredient. Craft iron nails at the forge for the windmill and spinning wheel.

The first village has no flax.

Keep the barley safe, mark the village and scout another prepared route. Crop selection varies; barley cannot be turned into flax.

I died while landing.

Rebuild food, Rested status and reserve gear first. Choose a safer landing and portal approach, deal with the shoreline threat from range if possible, then recover the grave with inventory space.
