Find the Bog Witch and put her supplies to work

Pre-1.0 reference · selected 1.0 corrections · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Explore distant Swamps with a tested escape portal and poison resistance until the Bog Witch’s cauldron icon appears. After the Elder, budget 260 coins for a Serving tray and five Woodland herb blends. Use one blend, eight sausages, four bloodbags and two turnip stews at a Food preparation table, then place the feast with the tray to eat it. Return after Moder for a Scythe handle if you manage a large crop field.

Find the Swamp trader safely, buy a useful first bundle, prepare and serve a complete feast, then return after Moder for the crop-harvesting Scythe.

Building and serving menus

Hammer and Serving Tray menus were overhauled. Find the named piece in the current menu. Check materials and the required station instead of relying on an old tab position.

Still unresolved: Platform-specific menu paths and new construction recipes are not yet documented here.

Before you start

  • A reliable Swamp kit and poison-resistance supply, three foods, Rested, repaired equipment and a route home.
  • The Elder defeated in this world for the selected herb purchase; the food-preparation loop also needs iron and a level-2 cauldron.
  • Coins or spare valuables. Her location and shop progression belong to the world you are visiting; a new world does not inherit another world’s boss defeats.

Search farther Swamps, then secure a repeatable visit

  1. Scout Swamp regions roughly 3,000–8,000 metres from the world centre. Repeatedly searching only the nearest starter-island Swamp will not find her. Each world has possible locations; approaching the first one fixes her there and adds a cauldron icon to the map.
  2. Sail with spare portal materials and scout in daylight. Land on manageable ground beside the Swamp, place and test a return portal, then make short inland loops. The search band is not a safe route: avoid entering a later biome simply to reach the next patch of Swamp.
  3. Take poison resistance before contact with blobs or leeches, keep stamina for the retreat, and fight draugr on firm ground. Bring the hoe if you already use it to improve shallow paths. Follow the Swamp approach and recovery plan when enemies or wet terrain overwhelm the route.
  4. At the hut, use the protected camp to stop and trade. Keep weapons put away around Kvastur, the sweeping broom: it retaliates if attacked. Mark an outside portal site where construction is permitted, test the return route, and store the first purchases at home before extending the expedition.

Buy for a recipe you can finish

For the first useful feast, take 260 coins: 140 for the reusable tray and 120 for a bundle of five Woodland herb blends. That covers the bought inputs; you still supply the food below. Sell only spare valuables and inspect the selected stack before selling. See coins and trader priorities if the purchase competes with equipment you need.

The trader supplies ingredients, not permission to build a kitchen

You can build both new kitchen stations without finding the Bog Witch. The Mead ketill uses ordinary tin, copper and leather scraps within forge range, and needs a fire. Mead bases made there go into a sheltered Fermenter; buying an ingredient does not produce a drink. Your poison-resistance loop already works without her.

The Food preparation table uses iron, fine wood and leather scraps within workbench range. Obtain the iron through the crypt-to-smelter chain. For this feast, also build a cauldron over a fire and connect its Spice rack to reach level 2. Collect every listed ingredient to reveal its recipe. These stations are distinct: make sausages and turnip stew at the cauldron, then assemble the feast at the preparation table.

Supply one Swamp dweller’s delight from raw materials

Keep your travel meals separate from the ingredients. For one feast, reserve eight entrails, four raw boar meat, two thistles, six turnips, four bloodbags and one Woodland herb blend. This total assumes the ordinary recipe outputs; any Cooking-skill bonus is surplus.

Draugr supply entrails, and leeches supply bloodbags. Attack leeches from a safe bank instead of wading into their poison reach. Hunt boars in the Meadows or use a replenishing herd; keep the meat raw for both cauldron recipes. Gather thistle in the Black Forest or Swamp and mark useful picking routes. Grow turnips from Swamp turnip seeds with the Cultivator, and reserve planting stock before spending six vegetables.

  1. At Cauldron level 2, craft sausages twice: each batch takes four entrails, one boar meat and one thistle and yields four sausages. Reserve all eight.
  2. At the same cauldron, make two turnip stews. Together they use two boar meat and six turnips.
  3. At the Food preparation table, combine the eight sausages, two stews, four bloodbags and one herb blend. The output is one feast item; this recipe has no baking step.
  4. Replace the farm and gathering stock after the batch. Leave the spare herbs beside the preparation table, and make another feast only when the other ingredients are ready.

Place the feast before eating, and keep the remaining servings

  1. Carry the completed feast and equip the Serving tray. Open its build menu, choose the feast and place it on stable ground or a table at home. Interact with the placed feast to eat a serving; it cannot be eaten directly from the inventory.
  2. Use its ten servings across return visits or share them with the group. A serving starts at 35 health and 35 stamina and lasts 50 minutes; its bonuses decline with time. It is useful for long building, farming and resupply sessions. Keep two other suitable foods active and use the stronger foods from your current boss guide for dangerous travel.
  3. Leave a partly eaten feast where it is. Removing it forfeits the remaining servings. After all servings are used, clear the empty platter with the tray’s Remove option. Retain the tray for the next batch.

After Moder, turn a handle into faster harvesting

For a substantial crop field, revisit after Moder and buy the Scythe handle. Add six silver from the Mountain mining route, then craft at a sheltered Forge level 2. A connected forge extension such as Anvils supplies the extra level if you still have a basic forge.

Equip the Scythe and sweep mature crops, collect the harvest, then return to the Cultivator to replant. It cannot damage enemies and does not harvest Jotun puffs or Magecaps, so keep your weapon and normal mushroom-harvesting routine. Repair the tool at Forge level 2 before the next harvest.

Later feast spices appear after further world progress: Mountain pepper after Moder, Grasslands herbs after Yagluth, Hidden hills herbs after the Queen and Fiery spice after Fader. Revisit when a specific recipe fits your pantry; the first feast loop remains usable without buying the whole shop.

When something goes wrong

No hut appears in the Swamps near home.

Expand to farther Swamp regions in the search band. The trader is not in every Swamp; keep marking searched land and safe routes instead of repeatedly visiting the same nearest patch.

The herb or Scythe handle is missing from the shop.

Check the current world’s progression: Woodland herb blend needs the Elder, and the Scythe handle needs Moder. Progress on a different world is insufficient.

The feast is missing from the crafting menu.

Use the Food preparation table and collect all four ingredients, including the bought herb. First make the sausages and stews at Cauldron level 2; raw ingredients alone do not substitute for those prepared foods.

The feast will not eat from the inventory.

Equip the purchased Serving tray, place the feast through its build menu and interact with the placed dish. Keep the support intact and do not remove a partly eaten feast.

A shopping trip ends in death.

Return with spare food, poison resistance and equipment from the home chest. Recover through the known portal route in daylight. If enemies still control the approach, pull them away before taking the grave; abandon extra loot until the purchases and equipment are safe.

Keep the result useful

Use the success check to finish this job, restock any reserves you used and return to the supporting journeys or your current boss objective.
