The Ashlands · Survival journey

Prepare a Drakkar and a recoverable Ashlands landing

Pre-1.0 reference · selected 1.0 corrections · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Use the Queen’s Majestic carapace for an artisan press, then craft ceramic plates and a shield core. Build a Drakkar and pack an ordinary portal, workbench, shield generator, fuel and stonecutter materials. Sail south with repaired Mistlands gear and a reserve kit at home; a Longship is not the safe boat for boiling water.

Use the Queen reward, budget the boat and landing stations separately, and pack a return plan before entering boiling water.

1.0 changes for this guide Late-game gear durability · Ashlands encounters

Selected changes reviewed on . Other mechanics remain a pre-1.0 reference.

Late-game gear durability

Mistlands and Ashlands gear received higher durability. Check your item’s current durability and repair before departing. Keep the reserve kit in the guide.

Still unresolved: New durability values and per-item coverage are unresolved; this does not revalidate crafting costs or station levels.

Ashlands encounters

Spawn chances were reduced for multiple Ashlands enemies, while the interval between Charred spawns was shortened. Do not read the rebalance as a guaranteed longer quiet interval or lower overall difficulty. Keep a short route back to cover.

Still unresolved: Spawn probabilities, intervals and resulting difficulty are not quantified.

Before you start

  • The reward and established supply chain from the Queen journey.
  • A sheltered artisan table, black forge, renewable meals and meads, and a working home portal.
  • A tested sailing route and controls from the sailing guide; reserve equipment is stored at the home spawn.

Turn the Queen reward into travel equipment

  1. Bring the Majestic carapace home and build the artisan press beside the artisan table. Check level 2 and shelter before opening its crafting menu.
  2. Craft 30 ceramic plates for the Drakkar, plus another 5 for a shield core. Reserve the black core and surtling core for that shield core; these are separate from the portal cores.
  3. Build the Drakkar in open water near a workbench. Test steering, reverse and access to its storage before loading the expedition. Its broad hull needs more clearance than the boats you used earlier.

Put the landing structures in a named cargo set

The combined raw landing metals are 7 iron and 5 copper. Carry them on the boat because the first remote portal will be wood. Add storage, walls, roofing, fuel and spare building material beyond the table. Keep construction supplies accessible to the landing player.

Pack food for the outward trip and repeat outings, finished fire-resistance wine, healing/stamina support, melee weapons, a repaired bow with non-fire arrows, hammer and black-metal pickaxe. The earlier Draugr fang and obsidian arrows provide an on-site ranged supply chain. Leave a second equipped recovery set at the home spawn. Our recommendation is to postpone sailing if the landing-kit inventory is incomplete.

Use the southern approach as its own expedition

The Ashlands lie in the far south. Establish a marked, working portal on a manageable island before the final approach if the world offers one. At the jagged boiling-water approach, slow down and steer between spires; do not beach the ship simply to escape a turning problem.

The Drakkar tolerates the water but does not protect a swimmer or make the ship indestructible. A Bonemaw can dive or swoop before spitting three damaging projectiles, and can bite at close range. Keep movement and steering space on deck, avoid its spit, and return bow shots during a clear opening. It is immune to fire: use the packed non-fire arrows. Repair at a workbench when possible, and turn back before the hull or supplies force a desperate landing. Use the earlier sailing guide for wind and rudder controls.

Agree on roles in multiplayer: one steers while others watch the hull and threats; a landing player places the return structures while the group clears space. Solo players should choose a quiet approach and a small objective: secure the portal, then return home to restock.

When something goes wrong

The artisan table cannot make ceramic plates.

Pick up the Queen’s Majestic carapace and the artisan-press ingredients, place the press near the table, and confirm level 2 plus shelter.

The boat is stuck between spires.

Reduce sail, reverse deliberately and turn into a wider gap. Do not jump into boiling water to push or swim ashore.

The landing kit lacks iron or copper.

Return before the final landing. An ordinary portal cannot bring those bars to the frontier; plan the later stone-portal solution only after collecting its Ashlands ingredients.
