Build a return route before offering seeds

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Build and name a home portal, take the materials for its partner, and establish the remote endpoint before the boss fight. If water separates you from the altar, use a repaired Karve and a checked landing. Test the portal in both directions, stock recovery supplies and deliberately choose where you will respawn.

Pack portal materials, sail a Karve if needed, establish a defended outpost and test your return route before summoning The Elder.

Plan the expedition supplies → Combine bow, arrow, portal, and boat costs, then separate the landing kit.

Before you start

  • An Elder marker and a surveyed route, with a boat decision based on your actual world.
  • Prepared equipment and food, plus a hammer and building supplies kept separate from the boss offering.
  • Normal wood-portal rules and an enabled map. A world modifier or mod can change these assumptions; a no-portals world needs a complete physical return route instead.

Pack a complete portal connection

A new connection needs a home endpoint and a remote endpoint. The recipe below is for one portal; double its materials when you own neither. A workbench is needed within range to place each one, so pack ordinary wood for the remote bench as well. Walls, a chest and a shelter are additional building costs.

Get fine wood by using a bronze axe on birch or oak. Save greydwarf eyes and resin from Black Forest greydwarf drops. Obtain surtling cores from Burial Chambers and reserve the ones for this trip before using others in a kiln or smelter. Core wood from pine is a different material and cannot replace fine wood.

  • Place the home portal where you can reach it from your active home bed and recovery chest. Give it an unused tag, such as ELDER1, and copy that exact capitalization into your notes or a map pin.
  • Carry the remote portal kit, hammer and bench wood in your own inventory when landing, so you can establish the connection without leaving essentials aboard a threatened boat.
  • Keep food and workable spare equipment at home. If the route requires a boat, reserve replacement boat materials there before treating the voyage as your only route.
  • For a land journey, walk the surveyed route and continue with the outpost steps below; a Karve is not required merely because this is the second boss.

Build a Karve only if the route needs one

Build at a checked shoreline with a workbench in range. Use the hammer’s boat placement preview to put the hull in water with room to move, then check that you can reach its ladder. Clear nearby enemies before loading supplies.

The Karve uses fine wood, deer hide, resin and bronze nails. Hunt deer for hides and save resin from greydwarfs or ordinary wood gathering. Craft the nails at your forge using smelted copper and tin made into bronze; the boat needs four nail batches, which use four bronze. Bring finished nails rather than loose bronze if they may need to pass through your portal later.

Learn the rudder before the long crossing

Treat the first short circuit as its own lesson. Do not combine unfamiliar controls, a full cargo load and an unknown crossing. The practice is complete when you can leave shore, change speed, turn, stop with room to spare and reach the ladder again.

Board and interact with the rudder. The forward and backward movement controls change the speed setting through reverse paddling, stop, forward paddling, half sail and full sail. Use the on-screen prompts for your controls; keyboard and controller bindings differ.

The wind indicator shows whether your heading can use sail power. A headwind calls for paddling or a different heading. Paddling is also useful for leaving shore and docking. The hull must be moving to turn; reversing changes the effect of the rudder. Stop raises the sail and removes propulsion, but the hull still carries momentum.

  1. Repair the hull and make a short circuit near the departure shore. Practice turning, stopping early and reaching the ladder before taking the full load away.
  2. Start the outward trip with fresh food and enough daylight to inspect a landing. Keep a known coast in reach where practical, while leaving space around rocks and dangerous shores.
  3. Reduce speed before a narrow inlet, uncertain shallows or weather fog. Do not wait until the bow touches a rock to start stopping.
  4. If a threat or damaged hull makes the crossing doubtful, turn toward a previously checked landing. Open water can contain serpents; this plan does not assume the Karve can safely fight or escape every encounter.

Secure a landing and keep the outpost away from the fight

Use the shelter guide for roof, support and a vented fire if you build a resting area. Walls help you manage ordinary enemies, but they do not make a camp next to The Elder safe. Bring the fight back toward the arena, not toward the portal that you need for recovery.

  1. Choose a surveyed Meadows shore or a manageable Black Forest landing. Look for enemies and nearby biome boundaries before disembarking; a patch of beach is not a safety guarantee.
  2. Approach slowly, stop the boat with its ladder accessible and get ashore without a long swim. Mark the landing so you can find it again.
  3. Place a workbench close enough to cover the hull. Equip the hammer, select its repair action and target the boat until repaired. This uses the nearby bench’s building area and does not consume boat materials.
  4. Choose firm ground for the portal and a small sheltered supply point. Keep it away from the altar’s fighting area, with a clear route between the landing, outpost and boss approach.
  5. Put a door or other manageable barrier between routine forest traffic and your supplies, and leave room to walk through both sides of the portal. Clear immediate threats and inspect the site for a troll, bear or active spawner before calling it ready.

Test the portal both ways before offering seeds

Before the offering

Make a route that still works after a bad return

  1. 1
    Home

Claimed bed, food, spare gear and the named home portal.

  2. 2
    Landing or land route

Marked approach, repaired Karve only if your world needs water travel.

  3. 3
    Remote outpost

Bench, protected supplies and a portal that has completed a round trip.

  4. 4
    Altar approach

Keep the camp and the boss arena separate; offer seeds only after the route is tested.

Portal survives

Return home, restock and rebuild the boat or remote supplies from reserves.

Portal is lost

Use the recorded land or sea route with food and replacement materials. Do not treat the home endpoint as a destination.

  1. Test the pair before the fight. Confirm the intended tag and usable space at both exits.
  2. Choose one active respawn. A home bed and a remote bed create different recovery starting points.
  3. Keep the recovery kit outside the arena. Eat, restore Rested and make room for the recovered equipment before returning.
Conceptual expedition and recovery route, not a distance map, a guaranteed safe landing or a claim that every item can use a wood portal. Follow the checked route for your world and its portal settings.

Under normal rules, copper ore, tin ore and metal bars such as bronze block a wood portal. Look for the crossed-portal symbol on carried items if transit fails. Crafted equipment and bronze nails can pass; Ancient seeds and the Swamp key can also return through the portal. Do not assume an item is blocked merely because metal was used to make it.

  1. Build the remote portal and enter exactly the home tag. ELDER1 and Elder1 are different tags. Keep this name exclusive to these two endpoints; blank tags or a reused network tag can connect somewhere unintended.
  2. Wait for the connected visual effect, then step through. Confirm that you arrive at the intended home portal, not just any portal in the network.
  3. At home, repair equipment at the appropriate station, refill food and leave any incidental ore or metal bars in storage. Walk back through and confirm that the remote exit gives you room to move.
  4. Mark the remote portal with its tag and leave its name unchanged during this attempt. Make this round trip before summoning, while changing the route is still straightforward.

Choose your respawn and stock that location

The most recently claimed bed becomes your active respawn point. Claiming requires suitable shelter; it is separate from sleeping. For this first solo expedition, keeping the dependable home spawn is a useful default once the portal round trip works. A remote bed is an alternative when you deliberately want to recover locally.

Do not claim a remote bed simply because you built one. First put its recovery supplies in the chest and check the shelter. Use the bed and shelter checks if claiming or sleeping fails. Before leaving the outpost to summon, confirm where your active respawn is and where your spare food can be reached.

Choose one active respawn before the boss attempt.

Keep the return plan after you win—or lose the boat

Once the boss is defeated and the area is clear, use the established connection to take the Swamp key home. There is no need to enter a Swamp during this same expedition merely because you now own the key. Restock, inspect the outpost and decide separately whether to sail the Karve home or leave it at the marked landing for a later trip.

If the boat is destroyed but the portal survives, return home through the portal and bring replacement materials back. If the remote portal is also lost, your reserve supplies and the recorded physical route become the recovery plan. If loss happens before establishing the remote endpoint, treat it as a new voyage; the home portal alone cannot reach that shore.

Destroyed boats leave their stored cargo floating in a crate, but some construction materials, including nails, sink and may be unrecoverable in deep water. Do not budget recovery around retrieving every part. For a shoreline wreck, first arrange a safe way to reach the site and carry the salvage; avoid repeated exhausted swims after sinking materials.

When something goes wrong

The portal recipe is missing or placement fails.

Personally pick up fine wood, a greydwarf eye and a surtling core to discover the recipe. Use the hammer menu and check materials, ground placement and workbench range.

The portal stays disconnected or reaches the wrong place.

Check capitalization and spelling at both endpoints. Confirm the partner still exists and that only the intended pair uses this tag. Keep a clear physical return route until the round trip works.

The portal is connected but refuses to transport me.

Check your inventory for the crossed-portal symbol, especially incidental ore or metal bars. Store blocked items safely. World modifiers can also change portal availability.

The boat will not sail toward the marker.

Check the wind indicator and speed setting. Paddle to make progress into a headwind, or choose a different heading with open water ahead. Do not use full sail for a tight landing.

The hammer will not repair the hull.

Select the hammer repair action and check that the hull lies inside a nearby workbench’s building area. Move or place the shoreline workbench so it covers the boat.

The remote endpoint was destroyed and I respawned at home.

Eat from reserves, equip spares and follow the recorded land or sea route to rebuild the remote portal. A surviving home portal cannot transport you to a destroyed partner.
