Defeat the Elder and bring the Swamp key home

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Offer three ancient seeds at the Elder’s altar. Our recommended first approach uses a bow and fire arrows: shoot between attacks, put a stone pillar between you and the vine volley, and move to another clear position when roots appear. Keep the boss away from your return camp. Collect the Swamp key and trophy after the fight.

Summon once, use the altar pillars against the vines, move away from roots, recover a failed attempt, and secure both boss rewards.

Plan the expedition supplies → Combine bow, arrow, portal, and boat costs, then separate the landing kit.

Before you start

  • The actual summoning altar, identified in the Elder scouting guide, plus three ancient seeds.
  • Repaired armor and bow, selected arrows, three different foods and spare servings from the preparation guide.
  • A working return route, a confirmed spawn point, and recovery food and equipment stored outside the fight, following the expedition guide.
  • An understanding of your world’s death and combat settings. The recovery instructions below assume default recoverable inventory.

Make the arena a place you can move through

  1. Arrive without an active pursuit. Deal with ordinary enemies nearby, or withdraw if a troll or bear makes the approach unsafe. Starting a boss fight is not a solution to an already failing expedition.
  2. Walk around the four stone pillars and choose two clear routes between them. Clear obstructing vegetation where useful and let fallen logs settle. Do not put your only bed, portal or boat beside the offering bowl.
  3. Eat the three foods, wait for health to recover, and check the Rested timer. Confirm the bow and armor are repaired. Select fire arrows in the inventory and check the equipped ammunition instead of assuming the game chose them.
  4. Our recommendation is to start in daylight with reserve food available. Before offering anything, rehearse the route back toward the camp, including where to turn away if the boss follows.

Use three ancient seeds at the offering bowl

The requirement is three Ancient seeds, not carrot seeds or tree seeds. The scouting guide explains how to collect them from greydwarf brutes and nests.

Put the ancient seeds in a quick-use slot. Aim at the offering bowl on the Elder’s stone altar and use that slot. Wait for the summoning sequence, then move to the clear position you chose. The trophy hooks at the starting stones are not this altar.

Offer once for the group. Another offering can summon another boss; repeating the ritual is not a way to refresh or finish the current attempt.

Respond to the attack before taking another shot

The altar’s four stone pillars are indestructible cover against the vine volley. Nearby trees and your own wooden buildings are not equivalent protection. A pillar does not make nearby roots or a close stomp harmless.

Roots do not chase you and eventually disappear. Repositioning is usually more useful than fighting a whole patch. Watch the boss while moving: leaving one hazard can expose you to the next volley.

The Elder is weak to fire and immune to stagger. Use fire arrows for this approach; do not build the plan around staggering him with a parry.

Keep enough stamina to leave the next attack

Step out for a clear shot after a volley, draw only while you have room to stand, and return to cover when the next attack begins. Stop drawing while repositioning or recovering stamina. A missed shooting opportunity costs less than being unable to move.

Our starting allowance is 200 fire arrows, prepared in the equipment guide. That is a supply recommendation for a first attempt, not a verified number needed to kill the boss. Accuracy, bow quality, skills, difficulty and nearby players affect the fight.

If the Elder walks toward your pillar, move before the position turns into melee range. If ordinary enemies join, use your escape route and deal with them without leading the boss into the camp. Keep the fight around the altar area rather than retreating blindly into unexplored terrain.

With other players, agree who makes the offering and where everyone retreats. Spread firing positions without blocking each other’s movement. The targeted player needs cover; the others can take clear shots. Everyone still needs their own food, equipment and recovery plan.

Recover the kit before trying to finish the boss

Default tombstones persist, so there is no routine item-expiry race forcing immediate naked runs. Death modifiers can change what is retained or lost; these instructions cannot recover items your settings permanently remove. A missing or destroyed spawn bed can send you back to the starting stones, which is why the return setup is part of preparation.

  1. If still alive but low on arrows, food or durability, withdraw along the scouted route. Break pursuit before approaching the portal or bed. Do not expect leaving to remove the summoned boss or preserve all progress while you resupply.
  2. After a death, stop at your reserve chest. Eat and regain health, renew Rested, take limited backup equipment and leave space for the recovered kit. Re-establish travel first if the portal or boat was lost; do not attempt a long swim to replace the expedition.
  3. Locate the original grave. In default play a later death does not delete the first tombstone. Add your own map pin for an important grave so another death marker does not become your only navigation reference.
  4. Approach deliberately and open the tombstone when there is room to retrieve the equipment. It transfers automatically only if your inventory has enough room; otherwise transfer items manually. Emptying your own grave grants the temporary Corpse run effect.
  5. Leave the danger area, re-equip armor and weapons, then repair and replenish. Corpse run reduces some incoming damage and helps movement, but does not make you invulnerable. Do not spend that escape opportunity trying to land the final shot.

Collect the key and mount the trophy

  1. After the boss falls, deal with remaining nearby threats and collect the Swamp key and Elder trophy. Check the ground and your inventory before leaving; seeing the boss disappear is not the same as collecting the drops.
  2. Bring the trophy to the Elder’s hook at the starting Sacrificial Stones. Mount it, then interact to select the power if you want it. Defeating the boss does not automatically equip the power.
  3. Store the key somewhere you can find it again. It opens locked Sunken Crypt gates in the Swamp when carried in your inventory and is reusable. Both the key and trophy can use a normal wood portal.
  4. Return home, repair equipment and replace the recovery supplies. Keep the return portal and marked route if useful. A key is access to a dungeon, not proof that your existing supplies make the Swamp safe.

Understand the reward and the new risks

The current reference for the Elder power comes from the live Call to Arms patch: 60% more chopping and mining damage, plus 30% increased health regeneration. Older guides often describe only tree chopping. Select one Forsaken power at a time at the stones and use the power action to activate it; mounting the trophy alone is not activation.

Under default world-based raid rules, defeating the Elder enables the swamp army event while Bonemass remains undefeated. Troll raids can also become eligible if a troll has died in the world. Eligibility does not mean an immediate raid, and player-based event settings use different progression conditions.

Our immediate recommendation is to secure the base before the next biome: keep repair materials and backup food, protect the beds and portals, and use an open fighting area away from fragile storage if a raid arrives. Finish this journey with the key secured and a replenished kit, then follow the Swamp preparation guide before treating the key as a reason to enter a crypt.

When something goes wrong

The offering does nothing.

Check the item name and count: three Ancient seeds. Use the quick-use slot while aiming at the summoning bowl, not a stone pillar or the starting trophy hook. If the summon has begun, wait instead of offering again.

Vines hit me behind cover.

Use one of the altar’s four stone pillars and keep it directly between you and the Elder. Check whether he has moved around it or whether roots are striking you from beside the pillar.

The bow runs out of durability or arrows.

Use the planned return route to repair and resupply. A sheltered level-one bench can repair the Finewood bow, but crafting more fire arrows requires level two. The preparation guide explains the station distinction.

I died again before reaching my first grave.

The original tombstone remains in default play. Rebuild the approach with food, space for recovered items and a working route; the newest death marker does not prove the older grave is gone.

I have a key but no new power.

The key opens crypt gates. The trophy must be mounted on the Elder’s hook at the starting stones; then select the power there and activate it with the power action when wanted.
