Before you start
- A character who can already make short Black Forest trips: repaired equipment, a usable weapon and fresh food.
- A dependable home with food reserves and a claimed bed; use the shelter guide if either is missing.
- Map access under normal world settings. This route assumes solo play with the map enabled.
Search the Black Forest for a locator
The starting sacrificial stones are where you later hang boss trophies. They are not the place to look for The Elder’s locator. An Elder Vegvisir is a small rune stone found in Burial Chambers or at some ruined Black Forest structures. Interacting with it marks a nearby Elder summoning altar on your map.
You may already have passed one while collecting surtling cores. Revisit a marked chamber if you left rooms unexplored; otherwise search another area of forest. Neither a chamber nor a tower guarantees a locator.
- Start fed and Rested, and mark your departure point. Carry a light source for dungeons.
- Check Burial Chambers using the room-by-room core-gathering route. Deal with enemies before stopping to inspect stones.
- Inspect the outside of forest ruins after clearing or avoiding their guards. Some greydwarf towers have a locator on the exterior.
- Read the stone’s interaction prompt, interact, then open the map and identify the new Elder marker. Record which chamber or ruin you searched so you do not repeat the same trip.

Treat the marker as a destination, then find the route
Unexplored map areas stay covered until you travel through them. A boss marker beyond that fog does not tell you whether the route is continuous land, an inlet or a sea crossing. There is no useful universal compass direction: your world determines the route.
Work outward from explored terrain in daylight. Mark home, useful landings and your turnaround point with names you will recognize during a recovery trip. If the coast blocks your route, scout along it before deciding whether a boat is needed. If the altar is reachable by a manageable land route, you can walk and establish the same portal connection described in the expedition guide.
- A longer route through familiar Meadows and Black Forest can be a better first trip than a direct shortcut through an unfamiliar biome.
- Give Plains shores room: being on a boat does not make a dangerous shoreline harmless. Do not use a Swamp or Mountain crossing simply because it lines up with the marker.
- If visibility falls in weather fog, slow down or return to a known landing. Weather fog and the map’s unexplored area are different problems; neither is a reason to rush into unknown ground.
- For a necessary sea crossing, finish the Karve, portal and landing preparations before carrying your complete boss supplies abroad.

Scout the approach without summoning
Approach from ground you have already checked. Look for nearby greydwarf groups, skeletons, trolls and bears; bears are another aggressive Black Forest threat. You do not need to defeat every creature you see. Turn back or choose another approach when a large enemy would become part of the trip.
Once you identify the altar, learn the path back to your landing or future outpost. Check that the route does not depend on a jump you can barely make, a swim or a steep descent you cannot reverse. Choose an outpost site away from the fighting area, with clear access and a route you can follow under pressure. No fixed distance makes a forest camp invulnerable.
Leave the offering alone during this survey. Your next job is food, weapons and supplies, followed by a working return route. The boss guide covers the actual arena and attacks.

Collect Ancient seeds while preparing
Ancient seeds come from greydwarf brutes and destroyed greydwarf nests. A nest is a creature spawner, so it can become a larger fight while you are trying to break it. Clear nearby threats, attack the identified nest when you can manage its defenders, and retreat if the group grows beyond your control. Collect the drops after the area is manageable.
Count the Ancient seed items in your inventory or storage. Three are needed for one Elder summon. Do not assume every greydwarf kill produces one, and do not confuse them with carrot seeds: Ancient seeds are an offering, not a crop. They can travel through a normal wood portal, so store them at home until your expedition is ready.

There is no Elder marker at the starting stones.
Search Burial Chambers and some Black Forest ruins for an Elder Vegvisir. The starting stones serve a different part of boss progression.
Several chambers or towers have no locator.
Finish checking the rooms you can safely reach, mark them as searched and try a different chamber or forest area. A locator is not guaranteed in each structure.
The altar marker looks far away or lies beyond unexplored water.
It marks a destination, not a safe route. Use a staged coastal survey and prepare the Karve and portal trip before committing your boss supplies.
I have killed ordinary greydwarfs but still have no seeds.
Look for the specific Ancient seed sources: greydwarf brutes and nests. You can postpone this fight while improving your food and equipment.
