Prepare your bow, armor, and food for The Elder

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

For this ranged route, bring a repaired Finewood bow, 200 fire arrows as a starting supply target, three different foods, and Rested. Upgrade the bow to quality 2 if you can, fill empty armor slots, and use available troll pieces. A complete bronze armor set is not a requirement.

Build a practical Elder loadout with a Finewood bow, fire-arrow material budget, useful armor choices, meals, and a workable repair plan.

Plan the expedition supplies → Combine bow, arrow, portal, and boat costs, then separate the landing kit.

Before you start

  • A home workshop and the bronze axe route from your first bronze equipment. The axe is the straightforward way to harvest the bow’s fine wood.
  • Access to Meadows hunting and Black Forest pine; a sheltered workbench that can reach level 2.
  • An Elder destination from finding The Elder, or a plan to prepare this equipment while you search.

1. Make a Finewood bow and its first upgrade

This is a preparation recommendation for the ranged Elder strategy, not a summoning requirement. The bow and fire arrows let you fight from the altar’s cover; extra armor cannot replace learning when to move.

Our quality-2 recommendation costs 15 fine wood, 15 core wood, and 4 deer hide in total, including the original bow. It adds durability without requiring another workbench extension. A chopping block costs extra if you have not built one.

The station used to upgrade gear and the station needed to repair it can differ: this bow still repairs at a sheltered level-1 workbench after the upgrade. Keep your repaired crude bow as an optional backup.

  1. Use your bronze axe on a white-barked birch in the Meadows, then break up its logs and collect fine wood. Chop Black Forest pine for core wood; even a stone axe can cut pine. Hunt deer for deer hide.
  2. Pick up each ingredient on your character, then craft the Finewood bow at a sheltered level-1 workbench. Ordinary wood, fine wood, and core wood are separate materials.
  3. Place a chopping block close to the bench and check that the station displays level 2. Open Upgrade with the bow and additional materials in your inventory; choose its quality-2 upgrade.

2. Make a deliberate arrow reserve

Use 200 fire arrows as this guide’s starting packing target for a first solo attempt. That is two full stacks, not a guaranteed kill count: missed shots, bow skill, difficulty, and the fight itself change consumption. Keep some wood arrows for hunting and travel so you do not spend the boss reserve early.

The Elder is weak to fire. Make fire arrows at the level-2 workbench, then select them as ammunition in your inventory before summoning.

  • For feathers, shoot a landed gull or crow with a wood arrow and collect the drops. Wait for a clear shot from a distance; approaching a gull closely makes it fly away. Check Meadows and Black Forest chests too. Feathers from felling trees are a chance bonus, not a reliable count per tree.
  • Collect resin from defeated Greylings and Greydwarfs, and save resin that drops while cutting early trees. Count what you already have before choosing a collection trip.
  • Reserve separate building supplies for the journey and return camp. The arrow budget excludes your boat, portal, shelter, and bow.

3. Fill armor slots and use hides you have

Keep useful armor you already own. If you are still wearing rags or leaving slots empty, the three leather pieces below are an accessible baseline. They offer little room for mistakes: learn the pillar-and-distance approach before committing to the boss.

Troll head, chest, and leg pieces each provide more protection than new leather pieces, without a movement penalty. If previous exploring supplied troll hide, use it for these replacements. You can mix pieces; our route does not require a cape or a complete set bonus. Do not turn this preparation list into a mandatory troll hunt or a full bronze armor grind.

Hunt deer for leather’s hide. Trolls supply troll hide; skeletons in Burial Chambers supply the helmet’s bone fragments. When materials are limited, replace one weak slot at a time rather than crafting both complete rows.

Repair these pieces at your level-2 workbench before leaving. A bare level-1 bench at an outpost repairs the Finewood bow but cannot repair this armor. If ordinary forest encounters still leave you unable to retreat safely, improve equipment or practice before summoning.

4. Pack meals you can replace

Cooked deer meat, cooked boar meat, and honey remain a practical starting combination: two foods favor health and honey supplies stamina. The food and Rested guide covers hunting, cooking, bees, and the exact food values. If honey is unavailable, raspberries fill a distinct food slot while you work toward a stronger supply.

For a first attempt, pack at least three servings of each chosen food and leave another meal at your return point. This is a packing recommendation; a long voyage needs more. Eat before the dangerous part of the trip, refresh food when the game permits, and allow your health to recover before summoning.

Restore Rested near your sheltered fire before departure, and again at the return camp when needed. Watch its timer: carrying good food does not provide the regeneration benefit of Rested. This route does not require mead or a fermenter.

Optional: make carrot soup if your garden is ready

Carrot soup is a useful replacement for honey in the two-meat combination: one serving starts at +15 health and +45 stamina and lasts 25 minutes before expiring. It also gives an existing carrot plot a repeatable purpose. If you have not begun farming, the earlier meal remains an option while crops grow.

For the suggested three carried servings, set aside 9 carrots and 3 mushrooms in addition to your planting reserve. Growing a crop takes time; do not spend the last harvested carrots if you want the garden to keep producing.

  1. Follow the cultivator and carrot route to collect wild Black Forest seeds, cultivate a protected Meadows plot, and plant carrots with room to grow. One planted seed produces one carrot after maturation. Keep some carrots for Seed-carrot planting, which grows replacement seeds.
  2. Smelt 10 tin bars for the cauldron. With your hammer equipped, place it within forge range above a campfire. Keep the fire fueled, sheltered from rain, and ventilated; the cauldron needs it lit to work.
  3. Pick up harvested carrots and red mushrooms, then use the cauldron’s crafting menu. Each base serving uses three carrots and one mushroom. Collect the finished soup directly; it needs no further grilling, fermentation, or cauldron improvement.

5. Rehearse, repair, then make the journey

  1. Use a few wood arrows on a safe hunting trip. Practise drawing fully, releasing a deliberate shot, and moving with stamina left. Avoid holding the bow drawn while looking for a target.
  2. Return and repair the bow and armor. Check the actual durability bars, equip the armor, and confirm the intended arrow type is selected. Carry a usable melee weapon for small enemies encountered en route.
  3. Pack the chosen food and arrow reserve, leave recovery supplies, then follow the expedition guide to establish the route back before offering any ancient seeds.

When something goes wrong

The Finewood bow recipe is missing.

Pick up fine wood, core wood, and deer hide yourself, then open a sheltered workbench. Ordinary wood and leather scraps do not substitute for them.

The bow upgrade or fire arrows are unavailable.

Check that the bench displays level 2 and every ingredient is in your inventory. Reposition the chopping block if it is not connected. The bow upgrade also needs the existing quality-1 bow and the Upgrade menu.

The outpost bench repairs my bow but not my armor.

Leather and troll armor need a level-2 workbench. Add a connected chopping block or return to your equipped home workshop.

I run out of stamina while aiming.

Check food and Rested, release the draw between shots, and practise shorter deliberate aiming windows. Keep stamina in reserve for moving to cover. Carrot soup is an optional food improvement.

The cauldron cannot be placed or used.

Use smelted tin and the hammer within forge range to build it. For cooking, check the lit fire underneath, fuel, rain protection, and ventilation. An ordinary workbench does not satisfy its placement requirement.

I have carrots but cannot make soup.

Pick up a red mushroom as well and use an operating cauldron, not the cooking station. The base recipe needs three carrots per serving.
