Play with friends and fix connection problems

Quick answer

Patch 1.0.20 is announced October 15. Iron Gate warns that Mac App Store delivery is delayed and crossplay with other platforms will not work until that build catches up. Finish available updates, then start with a small test: one host and one friend. For mixed platforms, enable crossplay and use the host’s current join code. If joining fails, change one setting at a time and preserve the original save before testing mods or a new server configuration.

Mac App Store crossplay waits for its patch · 1.0.20

Mac App Store patch delivery is delayed; crossplay between that storefront and other platforms is unavailable until it catches up.

What to do: Check available updates and actual host/client versions before retrying.

Still unresolved: No delivery completion time or successful connection is established.

Old cheated flags reset; Forge, server and Xbox fixes · 1.0.20

Resets old item/build-piece cheated flags, corrects cheat-item cases, fixes a Forge of Potential exploit, dedicated-server frame-rate behavior and some Xbox settings persistence.

What to do: Preserve saves and inspect the same item, station or settings after the applicable update.

Still unresolved: These fixes do not restore item-stand variants or establish tested recovery, exploit details or a safe Forge rate.

Crossplay during the 1.0.17 rollout · 1.0.17

Iron Gate says 1.0.17 will take a few days to reach all platforms and crossplay remains functional during that rollout.

What to do: Record the host and client versions and test the current join code before changing branches.

Still unresolved: The announcement does not establish that every platform already has 1.0.17 or verify an individual connection, server or mod setup.

Crossplay during the 1.0.16 rollout · 1.0.16

The 1.0.16 publication says crossplay remains available while the update reaches platforms over several days.

What to do: Check installed client/server versions and the current join code before changing branches.

Still unresolved: This notice does not verify an individual connection, mods or compatibility between every differing version.

Crossplay during the patch rollout · 1.0.15

Iron Gate says crossplay continues during the staggered 1.0.15 rollout.

What to do: Record client and server versions and consult the publisher notice before changing branches.

Still unresolved: Platform version numbers can differ. The announcement does not prove that an individual connection works.

Guest character manual saves · 1.0.14

Iron Gate reports a fix for guest characters not saving correctly when using manual Save on another player’s server.

What to do: Check your installed version and retain existing backups. The publisher says platform rollout can take several days.

Still unresolved: The announcement does not establish that every save problem is fixed or that a particular backup can be restored.

Before you start

  • Agree which player or server holds the world. The world host and each player’s character save are separate responsibilities.
  • Check that every player and the dedicated server have finished updating. Record the actual version shown in each installation.
  • Keep the current world and character backups before changing mods or moving a world. Use the returning-player checklist.

0.20: temporary Mac App Store crossplay gap

Checked against 1.0.20 patch notes on (this section)

The October 15 note says Mac App Store players cannot crossplay with other platforms until the delayed patch arrives there. This supersedes older general statements that crossplay continues through every staggered rollout. Check the current Mac App Store update and the actual host/client versions; no completion time or Kingy connection test is supplied.

The same patch fixes dedicated servers running at an uncapped frame rate when v-sync was enabled in the client on the same computer, and Xbox One / Xbox Series settings failing to save between sessions for some users. These fixes do not establish a universal performance or settings-recovery result.

Crossplay status checked October 8

Checked against 1.0.17 patch notes on (this section)

The updated September 11 notice says the delayed Switch 2 patch has arrived. The October 6 announcement says crossplay continues while 1.0.17 reaches each platform over several days. It does not confirm that every platform already has the patch. These statements supersede the earlier delay notice; they do not certify every player’s network or mods.

Steam and Switch 2: retire the old downgrade advice

Checked against 1.0.15 patch notes on (this section)

The Steam default_old workaround was temporary advice for the earlier Switch 2 rollout delay. The updated official notice reports that delay resolved. It is retained here as historical context, not a recommended downgrade.

  1. Finish available updates on the clients and host, then retry with one friend and the current join code.
  2. If Steam was moved to an older branch for the former Switch 2 delay, back up the world and characters before changing it. Check the current publisher guidance with the host.
  3. Record client and server versions and the exact error if joining still fails. Continue with the connection checks below; a publisher crossplay announcement does not prove an individual setup works.

4

Join a friend across platforms

Iron Gate’s 1.0 FAQ describes crossplay for up to ten players. Check the dated platform guidance above before following these connection steps. Menu wording may differ by platform.

  1. The host starts the intended world with multiplayer and crossplay enabled, then checks the current join code in the pause menu.
  2. The joining player opens Join Game, chooses Add server and enters that code. Confirm the password separately if the host set one.
  3. Join with one player first. Verify the world name and a familiar landmark before inviting the rest of the group.

6

Check the dedicated server’s backend

Checked against 1.0.12 patch notes on (this section)

On Steam 1.0.12, Iron Gate reports that banlists and whitelists accept legacy Steam_ identifiers again as well as newer V_ identifiers. If an existing permissions file appears ignored, confirm the installed server branch before rebuilding the list. The same hotfix addresses a crash while accessing an unloaded zone; it does not establish that every connection failure is fixed.

The official manual distinguishes Steam networking from the crossplay relay. A crossplay server uses the -crossplay argument and cannot be joined using a local or loopback IP address; use the current join code or the documented public connection method.

For a Steam-backend server, the published default port range is 2456–2457. Follow the current manual and your router documentation. Crossplay uses a relay and does not require that port-forwarding setup.

Keep a separate copy of a customized launch script because updates can replace the original. Read the manual supplied with the installed server before making configuration changes.

7

Keep the world and character progress straight

Crossplay does not provide universal save synchronization. Iron Gate documents shared saves between Xbox and the Microsoft Store PC version; other platform combinations do not receive automatic cross-platform save sync.

Before moving a world, identify its current owner and make an independent backup. Confirm the migrated world in a test session before resuming normal play. Do not treat a cloud-sync prompt as proof that the right version of the world is stored safely.

8

Leave a useful record if it still fails

  • Record the time, player platforms, client and server versions, and whether crossplay is enabled.
  • Capture the exact error and the last relevant server messages. Remove passwords, join codes and personal identifiers before sharing a log publicly.
  • Write down the smallest setup that still fails and the settings you already tested. That gives the host or official support a reproducible problem.

If something goes wrong

My progress did not appear on another platform.

Check the save-sync limits above. Being able to join a friend does not transfer your character between every platform.

The unmodded test works but the normal world does not.

Stop testing on the only copy of the normal save. Keep the backup and compare the mod versions and requirements with their maintainers’ current instructions.

I can connect from outside but not using a local address.

Check whether the server uses crossplay. The official relay instructions exclude local and loopback addresses.
