The Mistlands · Survival journey

Enter the Mistlands with light and a way home

Pre-1.0 reference · selected 1.0 corrections · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Build a Wisp fountain at home within Stonecutter range, collect wisps in darkness or rain, then craft and equip a Wisplight. Sail with repaired Plains equipment and fire resistance, place a tested portal on a defensible edge, and scout short routes for mines, roots and giant skulls. Leave dvergr property intact during these first trips.

Use Yagluth’s Torn spirits, prepare a spare Wisplight, scout the broken terrain and keep dvergr settlements neutral while locating your first mine.

1.0 changes for this guide Mistlands visibility · Late-game gear durability · Base pieces and raids

Selected changes reviewed on . Other mechanics remain a pre-1.0 reference.

Mistlands visibility

Wisplight, Wisp torch and Mistwalker clear farther; all Mistlands weapons now clear mist. Keep a spare light and a marked recovery route. Check visibility with your actual equipment before crossing a drop.

Still unresolved: Exact clearing radii and equipment interactions are not established by the notes.

Late-game gear durability

Mistlands and Ashlands gear received higher durability. Check your item’s current durability and repair before departing. Keep the reserve kit in the guide.

Still unresolved: New durability values and per-item coverage are unresolved; this does not revalidate crafting costs or station levels.

Base pieces and raids

The set of build pieces tagged as player base changed. Treat old piece lists and raid-eligibility advice as pending review. Preserve an exit, spare kit and protected livestock.

Still unresolved: Which pieces changed, suppression coverage and applicability to the new events remain unverified.

Before you start

  • Yagluth defeated and Torn spirits stored after the Plains boss.
  • Repaired Plains armor, a practiced melee weapon and shield, a bow with ammunition, three replenishable foods and Fire resistance barley wine.
  • A Black metal axe for Yggdrasil shoots; portal supplies and a physical boat route for later black metal and Dvergr extractor transport.

Turn a Torn spirit into visibility before sailing

The 1.0 release increases mist clearing for Wisplight, Wisp torches and Mistwalker, and adds mist clearing to all Mistlands weapons. It does not give the new radii. Keep the first-trip Wisplight and recovery spare: Mistlands weapons are later equipment, and visibility must still be checked on the ground.

  1. Place a Stonecutter by a workbench at home, then build the Wisp fountain within its construction area. The fountain works in any biome, so you can collect wisps before risking the mist.
  2. Visit when it is dark or raining and interact with the circling wisps. At a sheltered workbench, combine a wisp with silver to make the Wisplight. Equip it and confirm the following light is present.
  3. Make a second Wisplight for the recovery chest. The accessory slot also holds Megingjord and Wishbone: equipping the light means planning a lighter carry load. Its clearing area follows the wisp, so stop when turning sharply until the ground becomes visible.

Secure an edge landing and make small scouting loops

Choose a shoreline with room to land and fight, preferably beside a biome you already manage comfortably. Keep the boat outside immediate combat and put the portal where a retreat will not drag enemies through it. Test both directions and leave spare food, meads and equipment at home; set your bed deliberately rather than overwriting a dependable spawn by accident.

Travel rested in daylight. Walk the valleys, use short climbs to inspect the surroundings, and keep stamina for a retreat. A ledge you can jump down from may have no easy return. Before the Feather cape, do not cross drops by assuming you can survive the fall.

Mark the portal, landing, safe corridors, dvergr camps, mine entrances, glowing Ancient Roots and giant skulls. Collect Jotun puffs and Magecaps without eating the entire first harvest. Chop reachable Yggdrasil shoots with the Black metal axe and place Wisp torches at route junctions. Use them for visibility; do not rely on them for spawn suppression. The 1.0 update changed player-base tags without listing the affected pieces, so the torch’s current status still needs checking.

Change the fight when the terrain is wrong

First-trip responses
ThreatResponse
SeekerMove onto level footing and isolate it. They can fly to close distance; a low rock is not a dependable barrier. Leave if several arrive.
Seeker soldierAvoid a first-trip fight unless the exit remains open. Its rear abdomen is vulnerable; frontal attacks against the armored body are inefficient.
GjallUse fire resistance before the fire volley, keep moving, and shoot its exposed underside when you have a clear angle. Check the ground for ticks between shots. Retreat instead of firing blindly into mist.
Attached tickCombat-roll to detach it, then kill it from clear footing. Reserve enough stamina to roll rather than sprinting until empty.

Treat inhabited dvergr buildings as neutral camps

Dvergr are initially neutral. Do not swing at their ward, walls, furniture, crates or inhabitants: damage to protected property can turn the nearby group hostile. Avoid area attacks when enemies fight inside their buildings. A lit inhabited tower is not automatically an Infested Mine.

Record component crates for the later sap step. There is no normal extractor purchase or friendly handover in this route. Taking one requires breaking its crate; the extraction guide makes that choice explicit before you start a fight.

When something goes wrong

The fountain is missing from the building menu.

Pick up a Torn spirit and stone and stand within Stonecutter range. A workbench alone does not satisfy the fountain’s construction requirement.

I died and the mist hides my tombstone.

Use the spare Wisplight, eat recovery food and get Rested before returning. Follow your marked corridor; recover and leave before resuming exploration.

I angered a dvergr camp.

Withdraw along a route that avoids your portal and mark the camp hostile. Do not assume waiting or putting your weapon away resets its hostility.
