Tame wolves, breed a reserve and travel with a pack

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Prepare a strong pen near a manageable Mountain approach, lure in ordinary daytime wolves one at a time, and leave raw boar or deer meat within reach. Stay nearby but out of their alarm range until tame. Keep a fed breeding pair protected, raise offspring, then use Interact to toggle a surplus adult between follow and stay. Walk the pack home where possible: wolves do not follow through portals.

Capture and feed a pair, handle the starred night-wolf exception, raise offspring, and move companions without risking the only breeders.

Optional supporting guide · Research-based · Pre-1.0 mechanics reference; 1.0 compatibility is not yet verified · Version & review context

Before you start

  • A frost-protected Mountain approach and a practiced weapon/shield or dodge plan. Bring three current foods, Rested and healing mead; a wolf chase can become a pack fight.
  • Hammer, workbench, wood, a prepared capture site and a protected destination pen. Reserve raw Boar meat or Deer meat for feed.
  • Spare frost-resistance mead, food and equipment at home, plus a tested personal return portal. That portal is for you and supplies, not the animals.

Build the trap and your exit before finding the wolf

Start with ordinary wolves found during a daytime Mountain scouting trip. Choose a lower, manageable approach with a cleared route to the enclosure; the wolf can be led out of its home biome. Prepare a second pen at the destination if the first site is temporary.

  1. Follow the perimeter guide to build a compact Stakewall enclosure and gate within workbench range. Leave room for the animal to turn and reach dropped food. Thin decorative fencing is a poor capture barrier.
  2. Set up an escape over the wall or a separately closable exit before the chase. Test your movement while unthreatened. If using a dug pit instead, prepare an escape for yourself and a way to add a walkable ramp after taming; do not create a permanent animal trap with no exit.
  3. Put the personal recovery portal and waiting shelter outside the capture fight. Keep repairs available and remove other nearby enemies before opening the entrance.
  4. Lure one wild wolf through the entrance, use your planned exit and close the gate. Withdraw from view so it calms. If it keeps attacking the wall, repair only from safety and break its attention; no wooden enclosure is guaranteed to survive indefinitely. Repeat for the second wolf when the first capture is secure.

Separate feed from your own meals

Use raw Boar meat or Deer meat for the first attempt. Other accepted foods include raw Lox meat, Neck tail, Raw fish, Chicken meat and Sausages. Wolf meat, cooked meat and vegetables are not substitutes. A boar herd is a convenient repeatable feed source; keep your travel meals separate.

  1. Drop feed on reachable ground inside the enclosure; a stack is fine. Food left in a chest does not count.
  2. Wait nearby while remaining out of the wolf’s sight. Taming needs food, no active alarm and a player close enough to keep the area active. A distant portal trip stops progress; sleeping does not accelerate taming.
  3. Check for yellow taming hearts without repeatedly approaching and alarming it. Maintain food and deal with threats outside the pen. The reference time is about thirty uninterrupted minutes, so bring enough supplies to remain there longer.
  4. Confirm both adults are tame before opening the exit or approaching as a companion. Keep the capture enclosure usable until the pair reaches its permanent shelter.

Treat starred wolves as a later capture project

Starred wild wolves appear at night. Their initial feed and taming progress must begin at night; before that, daytime fleeing and disappearance are risks. Prepare the trap and feed before searching, rather than trying to build around a captured wolf at dawn.

The current Wolf and Taming references say that once taming has actually started, the night-despawn behavior clears and daytime feeding can continue. A wolf merely standing beside meat is not proof of progress. If dawn arrives before progress, keep it contained and remain nearby until the next night; do not leave to fetch supplies and assume it will wait.

For a first pack, an ordinary pair is sufficient. Preserve a successfully tamed starred adult at the breeding site and check offspring stars before sending descendants away. Mixed-star parents do not guarantee every pup receives the higher rating.

Raise offspring before risking the founders

For breeding, keep two fed, calm tame adults within three metres of one another. The reference checks for fewer than four wolves, including pups, within ten metres. A wall splitting one crowded footprint does not create a separate breeding area. Offspring inherit the stars of the parent that gives birth.

Pups are born tame but need to mature before you can command them; the reference growth time is about fifty minutes. Keep them enclosed while growing. Move surplus adults beyond the breeding group’s local area, or harvest them, when crowding stops new pups.

  1. Name the intended breeders using the displayed rename interaction and keep them in a protected compartment. Names are reminders, not protection against attacks or the Butcher knife.
  2. Use covered shelters and base defenses, with feed in reserve. Keep the founding pair home when testing a new route; ideally establish a second protected pair before a long relocation.
  3. Feed while doing nearby base work and look for breeding hearts and pups. Do not interpret a short delay as failure: food, proximity, population and active-area checks must all align.
  4. Allocate the grown offspring deliberately: replacement breeder, traveling companion or food animal. Avoid opening every pen at once just to remove one adult.

Command each adult and use the pack on a suitable route

Companions add help to the raid plan; they do not replace the perimeter or resistance supplies. Close the breeder shelter before fighting. Feed injured survivors and allow them to recover before another outing rather than sending the last pair straight back into combat.

  1. Face a tame adult and use Interact to toggle between following and staying. Read its status, then walk a short loop and verify it follows before starting the journey.
  2. Walk in daylight on the cleared route, stopping at turns and obstacles to check the pack. If a wolf stops, return to it, clear the obstruction and refresh its follow command. Avoid cliff-edge bottlenecks where animals can crowd you.
  3. At the destination, lead it into the prepared pen, toggle it to stay and close the gate. Staying permits nearby wandering and does not prevent combat; it is not a substitute for an enclosure.
  4. Take surplus adults on modest gathering or hunting trips and keep the breeding reserve protected. Wolves attack many wild creatures but do not fight wild wolves for you. They can chase enemies into danger; keep your own weapon ready and turn back before a later-biome fight overwhelms the pack.

Plan physical transport before a sea crossing

Wolves cannot follow through portals, including using your personal portal as a shortcut to another island. Leave them enclosed before teleporting, and return physically to collect them. Walking a continuous land route is the simpler transport plan.

For an unavoidable crossing, use surplus adults and leave breeding stock behind. Boat transport is physically possible but unreliable: wolves can fall or jump off toward enemies, and collision damage can kill them. Calm daylight improves visibility; it does not guarantee a safe voyage.

  1. Prepare pens and access at both shores. Use a repaired Longship when available, with the sailing and rescue routine and enough building wood for a dock ramp.
  2. Build a flat shore-supported gangplank over the deck. Lead an adult onto it with Follow, then remove the plank beneath it with the hammer so it drops onto the deck. Avoid swinging a weapon beside the animal or hull. Construction remains attached to shore; you cannot build a cage onto the boat.
  3. Count the loaded adults and make a short local trial before committing to open water. Steer clear of hostile coastlines and keep watching the animals; they are not items safely packed in cargo slots.
  4. At the destination, stop beside a prepared shallow landing and provide a flat dock/ramp route off the deck. Use Follow and gentle repositioning if a lip obstructs it. Secure each arrival in its pen before unloading the next.
  5. If a wolf enters the water, slow or stop and keep it in sight while guiding it toward a safe shore. Wolves can swim after you, but a long swimming escort is exposed to enemies and separation. Do not abandon the helm to attempt an exhausted personal swim.

Use the surplus and keep the pack replaceable

A surplus adult can supply Wolf meat and pelts when slaughtered with the Butcher knife method. Isolate the chosen adult first. Preserve pelts for Mountain equipment, and remember that every optional material or trophy drop is not guaranteed.

Roast raw Wolf meat on an ordinary Cooking station over fire and collect it before burning. For a stronger later meal, reserve raw meat for Wolf skewers: one raw Wolf meat, two red Mushrooms and one Onion at Cauldron level 3. The Spice rack and Butcher’s table provide that level; use the onion reserve cycle for repeat batches. Wolf meat does not feed the remaining wolves.

  1. After a lost companion, check the last sighted route and nearby fighting locations from safety. A wolf left behind by your portal has not necessarily died. Refresh Follow when found and bring it to shelter.
  2. If the expedition is lost, recover your own equipment using the transport recovery plan, then restart the traveling group from protected offspring. Animals killed in combat do not leave a recoverable living companion in your tombstone.
  3. If the breeding pair also died, repair the enclosure and replenish feed before another capture. Restore a destroyed player bed and claim its spawn point using the shelter checklist before returning to the Mountain.

When something goes wrong

The trapped wolf will not eat or tame.

Use accepted reachable feed, remove its active alarm and stay close enough to keep the area active. For a night-spawned wolf with no progress, its first feeding must happen at night.

Fed wolves never produce another pup.

Check adult partner distance and the nearby count including pups. Move surplus adults farther away, leave the pair fed and calm, and do nearby work while breeding checks run.

The wolf does not follow or went missing after a portal trip.

Return to its last position. Wolves do not portal with you; inspect the adult’s command status and refresh Follow. Pups need to mature first.

The pack fights while ordered to stay.

Stay permits local activity and does not disable aggression. Keep breeders behind a defended enclosure and take only surplus adults toward likely enemies.

A wolf will not leave the boat.

Check the deck-to-dock lip and replace steep stairs with a flatter accessible route. Reposition at a safe shallow shore; do not attack the wolf to make it move.

Keep the result useful

Use the success check to finish this job, restock any reserves you used and return to the supporting journeys or your current boss objective.
