Use the Dead raiser: summon, protect and replace skeletons

Pre-1.0 reference · selected 1.0 corrections · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Craft the Dead raiser at Galdr table 1, eat enough eitr food and summon on cleared ground near the destination. Each cast raises one friendly skeleton (Skelett) and costs up to 100 eitr plus 40% of current health. Staff quality sets the cap from one to four; another cast at the cap replaces the oldest summon. Heal between preparations, gather skeletons for protection, and keep a physical escape plan when they scatter or die.

Craft and upgrade the Dead raiser, budget two eitr foods, manage the current summon cap, travel sensibly and train Blood magic without casting away your health.

1.0 changes for this guide Mistlands visibility · Late-game gear durability

Selected changes reviewed on . Other mechanics remain a pre-1.0 reference.

Mistlands visibility

Wisplight, Wisp torch and Mistwalker clear farther; all Mistlands weapons now clear mist. Keep a spare light and a marked recovery route. Check visibility with your actual equipment before crossing a drop.

Still unresolved: Exact clearing radii and equipment interactions are not established by the notes.

Late-game gear durability

Mistlands and Ashlands gear received higher durability. Check your item’s current durability and repair before departing. Keep the reserve kit in the guide.

Still unresolved: New durability values and per-item coverage are unresolved; this does not revalidate crafting costs or station levels.

Before you start

Use ordinary Skeleton loot for the base staff

  1. Check stored Black Forest loot first. Hunt ordinary Skeletons and clear still-occupied Burial Chambers if you need more Bone fragments or Skeleton trophies. Trophies are chance drops; Rancid remains or other trophy types do not fill this recipe.
  2. Use the refinery loop for the staff’s Refined eitr and craft at a sheltered Galdr table. Keep workshop construction costs separate from the staff materials.
  3. Repair the staff at Galdr table 1 and put it in a distinct hotbar slot from the protection staff. The 1.0 notes add mist clearing to Mistlands weapons. Check the visible ground when changing equipment, and keep the Wisplight and marked recovery route available; this guide does not establish a clearing radius for the staff.
  4. Store remaining bones and trophies at home. They pay for crafting and upgrades, not each summon; you do not need to carry a bag of bones as spell ammunition.

Upgrade the cap you can actually prepare and support

Quality 3 is possible before Ashlands because the candles use Black marble, Skeleton trophies, Refined eitr and Resin. Save their separate recipe budget rather than spending every trophy on the staff. Quality 4 waits for the Ashlands ingredients used in the wreath; follow the later magic workshop route when that is useful.

At your current cap, another cast kills the oldest summon and replaces it. It does not add one beyond the cap or heal the whole group. Raising quality increases capacity; Blood magic skill increases the summons’ damage, not their health.

Start with one skeleton to learn the route and casting rhythm. More summons require more preparation casts and can crowd narrow terrain; a higher cap is useful capacity, not an instruction to fill it during a dangerous fight.

Cast one at a time and recover before moving

The two-food recommendation keeps replacement summons available throughout an expedition. Switching to a food combination that cannot meet the cast cost may leave existing skeletons present but prevent replacing losses. Refresh expiring meals before committing to the next encounter and keep stamina for your own escape.

  1. Travel to a cleared destination first. Eat Seeker aspic, Yggdrasil porridge and a health food such as Meat platter; fresh aspic and porridge provide 165 maximum eitr together. At low Blood magic skill neither of those eitr foods alone covers the 100-eitr base cast.
  2. Wait for health and eitr to regenerate, equip the Dead raiser, and use its primary attack once. Check the new skeleton and your own health before doing anything else. At zero skill the cast removes 40% of current health, so repeatedly casting as soon as eitr permits can leave you badly depleted.
  3. Recover health and eitr on the cleared ground before each additional summon. Stop at the intended group size. Keep finished mead for the recovery plan, while using safe food regeneration for routine preparation where practical.
  4. Accept the initial random melee or archer loadout for a first outing. There is no equipment selector in the cast; repeatedly replacing summons to obtain a preferred variant spends health, eitr and staff durability.
  5. When the group is ready, gather it closely, apply protection and recover from that cast too. Check the bubbles before entering the next fight; unshielded stragglers need a separate safe regroup.

Lead through clear ground; summon again after travel

Ordinary player attacks do not normally hurt your tame skeletons with friendly fire off. The Butcher knife is an exception, and enabling friendly fire also allows damage. Keep those distinctions in mind when arranging hotbar slots; you do not need to change friendly-fire settings to use the staff.

If you deliberately need to replace a particular damaged summon, a Butcher knife can remove that tame and free its slot, followed by a new cast. Otherwise, casting at the cap replaces the oldest, which may be a different skeleton. A new summon has fresh health; protection refreshes do not heal the old skeleton or refill its already damaged bubble.

  • Summons arrive already tame and follow their summoner. Do not build a food-taming pen for them. They select nearby targets themselves; the staff has no secondary targeting command. Use your own position and a cleared route to keep a fight manageable.
  • Walk short stretches, look back at junctions and backtrack if a skeleton fails to navigate a doorway or slope. Do not open another room while the group is stuck behind you. Pets can be renamed, which can help distinguish a favored survivor from a replacement.
  • Keep neutral Dvergr settlements outside your fighting route. Summons leave neutral Dvergr alone, but nearby hostile fighting and damage to settlement property are still poor conditions for a safe regroup.
  • For portals, sailing and dungeon entry, carry the staff and food and summon after arriving on a secure floor. Portal item permissions do not grant tame-creature transport. Skeletons walk on the seabed instead of swimming; this is not a dependable ship escort or island-crossing plan.
  • No exact despawn time or survival guarantee after distant travel, unloading, logout or death is established here. Check what is actually present when you return, and budget destination casts instead of relying on a skeleton left far away.

Train through useful fights, then return before the group collapses

Dead raiser casting itself gives no Blood magic experience. Hits by your summoned skeletons train your skill; a protection barrier breaking gives its experience to the protected entity, so shielding another player or a skeleton is not a reliable way to train your own skill through that break.

For a first practice circuit, choose familiar enemies near a clear retreat and let the skeleton take a short, observable fight while you remain able to help. Move away before the encounter grows beyond your own backup weapon. The purpose is to learn positioning and replacement timing; no experience rate, AFK farm or boss safety guarantee is claimed.

Recast protection on recipients whose bubbles have actually ended when you can do so safely. If replacing both protection and a fallen skeleton would consume your remaining fighting margin, withdraw first. Your health, food timer and route matter more than preserving every summon.

Treat a lost group as replaceable; recover the player kit first

  1. Retreat to the portal staging area if summons scatter, die or fail to follow. Use the physical backup weapon to clear a small path rather than chaining blood casts while exposed.
  2. After death, use the food and armor left at home, regain Rested and approach along the known route. Do not assume surviving skeletons will be present, follow correctly or hold enemies away from the tombstone.
  3. Collect the equipment, return to shelter and repair both staves at the Galdr table. Replace consumed food and mead before deciding whether to retry.
  4. Rebuild the group at the destination with the same staged health-recovery sequence. When that routine is dependable, return to the Queen route or proceed through Ashlands preparation; skeletons are an optional supporting loadout, not a boss unlock.

When something goes wrong

I ate one eitr food but cannot raise a skeleton.

At low skill the base requirement is 100 eitr. Use the two-food preparation, wait for the actual bar to fill and check food decay. Refined eitr in your pack does not supply casting eitr.

Casting removes a skeleton instead of increasing the group.

You have reached the equipped staff’s quality-based cap. Upgrade the existing staff at the matching Galdr level if you need more capacity; repeated casts replace the oldest summon.

The group stayed behind or vanished after travel.

Use the staff and food at your destination rather than relying on transport or an unverified survival timer. Summon only after securing room to cast and regenerate.

My Blood magic skill barely changes while I cast.

Casting alone is not the experience trigger. Your skeletons must land attacks; shield-break experience belongs to the protected entity. Choose controllable encounters instead of repeated empty casts.

My health is too low to prepare another summon safely.

Stop casting and withdraw to cleared ground. Recover with food regeneration or an available finished healing mead, then reassess whether the next encounter needs another summon at all.
