Before you start
- Finish the Sap, Soft tissue, Refined eitr and Galdr table chain. A Black forge alone cannot craft magic staves.
- Have a working Mistlands kitchen and replacement eitr meals, three active foods, Rested, healing mead, a familiar physical weapon and a tested return portal.
- Keep spare food, equipment and biome protection at the respawn base. Staff crafting and learning can happen before defeating the Queen.
Collect the staff materials after securing the workshop
- Use the Black metal axe to cut Yggdrasil shoots for Yggdrasil wood. Obtain Blood clots from Ticks during the Mistlands exploration loop; collect drops after clearing the immediate threats. A Swamp Bloodbag is a different ingredient.
- Bank clots after each useful trip. Use the Tick-detachment advice in the entry guide if one latches on; do not stand taking damage while trying to inspect its loot. You do not need to keep a hostile Gjall alive as a farm to make this staff.
- Refine the staff’s eitr separately from the amount already spent on the workshop. Bring the listed ingredients to a sheltered Galdr table and craft the base staff. Carrying Refined eitr afterward does not fuel spells.
- Repair at Galdr table 1 before leaving. A higher-quality staff still uses that repair level; a field Workbench cannot repair it.
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Staff of Protection | 20 Yggdrasil wood + 4 Blood clot + 16 Refined eitr | Galdr table level 1 |

Give the cast a resource bar and the caster a recovery margin
Fresh aspic supplies 85 eitr and porridge 80, giving 165 combined maximum eitr before food decay. Capacity is not the same as your currently filled bar: wait for regeneration and read the staff’s current requirement. Craft these at Cauldron 5; the shared recipes and kitchen guide cover the station chain. Porridge consumes raw Barley, so reserve it before milling the entire harvest.
Eitr-weave armor is optional for the first shield. Its regeneration bonus does not create an eitr bar without food, and lighter protection remains a tradeoff. Start with armor you can survive in, then use the Mistlands loadout comparison to decide which pieces to change.
Prepare finished healing mead and consider the late-game mead supply guide for repeated trips. Do not spend a healing cooldown on routine preparation if you can safely wait for food regeneration instead.
| Use | Three foods | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional protection with a physical weapon | Seeker aspic, Meat platter, Salad | One eitr food supports the base shield cast while retaining a health and stamina slot. Refresh the aspic before its declining capacity becomes insufficient. |
| Protection plus Dead raiser | Seeker aspic, Yggdrasil porridge, Meat platter | Two eitr foods support the larger summoning cost. Less stamina makes short movement bursts and a cleared casting area more important. |
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 2 × Seeker aspic | 2 Seeker meat + 2 Magecap + 2 Royal jelly | Cauldron level 5 |
| 1 × Yggdrasil porridge | 4 Sap + 3 Barley + 2 Royal jelly | Cauldron level 5 |
| 1 × Meat platter | 1 Uncooked meat platter | Stone oven |
| 3 × Salad | 3 Jotun puffs + 3 Onion + 3 Cloudberries | Cauldron level 5 |

Cast near the people or summons that need protection
The staff supports nearby allied players and tames, including Dead raiser skeletons. It does not tame a wild creature. This guide assumes cooperative play; it does not depend on enabling friendly fire or using another player as a damage source. For summons, keep the Butcher knife away from ordinary combat slots because it can harm tames.
- Clear a level staging spot on your return route, refresh food and Rested, and wait for health and eitr to fill. Keep an escape direction free of terrain drops and unopened rooms.
- Gather intended allies and tamed creatures close to you. Equip the staff and use its primary attack. The area is small; inspect each intended recipient for a visible bubble before separating. No exact meter radius is asserted here.
- Check your own health after the cast. At zero skill the sacrifice is 40% of the health you have at that moment, not 40% of your maximum. Higher Blood magic skill reduces the cost; a recently injured caster still needs recovery before the next fight.
- Return to your combat weapon when ready. Advance only far enough for a controlled first encounter; keep stamina for movement and watch for the bubble breaking. A shield timer does not mean you have that long to stand still under attack.
- If a teammate missed the cast, regroup while safe. Recasting may help that unshielded teammate but it will not refill the damaged bubbles that others already have.

Choose an upgrade for time; train skill for strength
Rune table and Unfading candles can both be built from materials available before Ashlands. Quality 3 is therefore a valid Mistlands workshop target. The shared extension recipes below give separate building costs; each staff upgrade card is additional material for the preceding-quality staff, not the full chain total.
At Blood magic 0, a fresh barrier absorbs 200 damage; skill increases that allowance by 5 per level, up to 700 at skill 100. Upgrading the staff does not increase that allowance. The barrier does not receive the wearer’s armor or resistance reductions, and monster attacks with additional Chop or Pickaxe damage can break it earlier than their ordinary health damage suggests.
A recast on an existing bubble restarts its duration while retaining the damage it has already suffered. Create space and apply a fresh barrier after the old one breaks or expires; do not invite a hit simply to break it. Continue wearing the environmental and combat protection your route needs for the moment the bubble is gone.
| Staff quality | Galdr requirement | Duration |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Base table | 60 seconds |
| 2 | Table + Rune table | 120 seconds |
| 3 | Table + Rune table + Unfading candles | 180 seconds |
| 4 | Add Feathery wreath from Ashlands materials | 240 seconds |
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Rune table | 10 Black marble + 5 Yggdrasil wood + 10 Refined eitr | Hammer; connected to Galdr table |
| 1 × Unfading candles | 10 Black marble + 3 Skeleton trophy + 10 Refined eitr + 15 Resin | Hammer; connected to Galdr table |
| 1 × Feathery wreath | 8 Celestial feather + 1 Asksvin trophy + 10 Refined eitr + 3 Ashwood | Hammer; connected to Galdr table |
| 1 × Staff of Protection: quality 2 upgrade | 10 Yggdrasil wood + 2 Blood clot + 8 Refined eitr | Galdr table level 2 |
| 1 × Staff of Protection: quality 3 upgrade | 20 Yggdrasil wood + 4 Blood clot + 16 Refined eitr | Galdr table level 3 |
| 1 × Staff of Protection: quality 4 upgrade | 30 Yggdrasil wood + 6 Blood clot + 24 Refined eitr | Galdr table level 4 |

Learn the timing before making it part of a recovery plan
- Try the meal-and-cast sequence at your safe staging area, then take one familiar encounter near a cleared retreat. Watch the effect disappear and retreat before attempting the next cast. This is a proposed practice routine, not a combat test performed for this guide.
- Do not repeatedly cast at an empty wall to train. Casting alone gives no Blood magic experience; see the skeleton and skill guidance for what actually trains it.
- After a death, eat the spare meals and restore Rested before returning. If the only staff is in the tombstone, use your spare physical kit and cleared approach; do not plan the retrieval around casting a barrier you cannot equip.
- Recover the equipment, retreat to the staging point and repair before resuming. Replace food and mead from the home reserve so the next attempt has the same preparation as the first.

The staff is in hand but cannot cast.
Check active eitr food, the actual filled eitr bar and staff durability. Refined eitr in inventory and mage armor alone do not supply the resource bar. Wait for regeneration or refresh food before another attempt.
A bubble vanished just after I recast.
A damaged active barrier retains its remaining absorption after recasting. Treat the timer and damage allowance separately; retreat before replacing a broken or expired bubble.
My friend or skeleton did not get a bubble.
Gather closely on clear ground and inspect the recipient after casting. The documented effect has a small local radius; do not assume a distant party member received it.
The quality 3 upgrade is missing.
Carry the quality 2 staff, discover its ingredients, and check that both distinct extensions connect to the sheltered Galdr table. Unfading candles require their own Skeleton trophies; an extra Rune table is not a substitute.
