Hunt the Vile and build a Vilebone loadout

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Find the rare Vile in the Plains at night, using a route scouted by day. Fire and spirit are useful against it, while common physical damage and frost are resisted. Bank its ribcages and chance trophy, add Bear hide and Linen thread, and craft the armor at Forge 2. The optional Maulclaws need Forge 4 and Black metal. Vilebone’s regeneration and blunt/pierce bonuses come with physical vulnerability.

Search the Plains at night, fight the undead Bear on prepared ground, bank its ribcages and trophy, and weigh Vilebone armor and Maulclaws against their defensive costs.

Optional supporting guide · Research-based · Pre-1.0 mechanics reference; 1.0 compatibility is not yet verified · Version & review context

Before you start

  • Complete Plains travel and recovery preparation and establish Plains food, Flax processing and equipment. These are recommended preparation and crafting dependencies, not a claim that a particular boss unlocks Vile spawning.
  • Carry a repaired bow, Fire arrows, a familiar backup weapon, three fresh foods, appropriate cold protection and healing mead. Use the finished-mead supply route if stronger recovery supplies are available.
  • Scout a hunting loop in daylight, test a portal outside the fighting area and stock a spare kit at home. Plan to stop searching before the food and Rested preparation expire.

Use fire, avoid the complete attack and resist the chase

The Vile is weak to fire and spirit, resists blunt, slash, pierce and frost, and is immune to poison. Fire arrows are a straightforward starting option for the bow you already use. Their pierce component is resisted; the fire component is the reason to choose them. Poison arrows do not exploit a hidden weakness.

Eat your established Plains meals and keep healing on hand. Carry a working frost-resistant cape if using it for night cold protection; changing into Vilebone armor later does not replace that cape’s job.

If you already play a mage, the Staff of Embers and eitr-food route offers another fire option. That is a later alternative, not a requirement to enter the hunt. Do not bring an unfueled eitr bar and expect the staff to substitute for prepared ammunition.

Use the attack cues below as a proposed fighting routine, not a guaranteed parry or dodge timing. Practice with ordinary Bears first if their similar animations are unfamiliar. A Vile is a much less forgiving place to learn a new weapon.

  1. Engage only when the surrounding ground and retreat are clear. Shoot from a position where the approaching Vile remains visible, then move across its aim as it closes.
  2. Read the low bite lunge and the forward-bounding claw attack; both can close distance. When it begins alternating paw swipes, wait for the follow-up rather than spending the opening too early.
  3. For the stationary rearing slam, move away from its body. The nearby circular hit area makes merely running behind it a poor answer.
  4. Attack briefly after a miss, then keep stamina for another movement. A torch or campfire can discourage close approaches, but fire avoidance does not stop every attack from outside that area.
  5. Withdraw if another enemy joins or your preparation is running out. Do not chase the retreating creature through a village or rely on dawn to finish the fight for you.

Bank ribcages and the rare trophy; fill the hide budget elsewhere

Check the area before collecting Vile ribcages, Bear hide and any Vile trophy. The trophy is a chance drop, so clearing one Vile does not guarantee the helmet. Keep the rare items in storage between searches instead of carrying the entire accumulated supply through every night.

The base armor target is 19 Bear hide, 4 Vile ribcages, 8 Linen thread and 1 Vile trophy. Ordinary Black Forest Bears can supply missing hides without another Plains night hunt. Bear paws and Bear trophies cannot replace a ribcage or Vile trophy.

For Linen thread, collect Flax from a Fuling village, preserve a planting reserve, grow it on cultivated Plains ground and put surplus Flax into a Spinning wheel. The complete Plains station chain explains Moder’s Dragon tears, the Artisan table and wheel construction. Each Flax produces one thread; reserve 8 for the armor before crafting optional gear.

The hide, ribcages and trophy pass a normal wood portal. Leave restricted Black metal scrap from other encounters in protected cargo storage, or use the boat and hauling route. Verify the inventory and the world’s portal rules rather than assuming one blocked item means every hunting material must sail home.

The Vile cannot be tamed, even though it can eat Blueberries. Do not build a feeding enclosure in place of a reliable hunting and return route.

Build the armor at Forge 2, then upgrade the existing pieces

  1. Use a sheltered Forge with a connected Anvils extension and confirm it displays level 2. The armor does not require a Black forge.
  2. Pick up all listed materials, craft the Visage, Cage and Drapes, then equip those head, chest and leg pieces together. Retain an appropriate cape; none is required for the three-piece set bonus.
  3. If you choose quality 2, add a Forge cooler for level 3. Upgrading all three existing pieces consumes an additional 9 Bear hide, 2 Vile ribcages and 2 Linen thread in total. Select Upgrade with the armor in your inventory.
  4. Repair all three pieces at Forge 2 or better before the next trip. Do not mistake the higher station needed for crafting an upgrade for a higher repair requirement.

Choose the damage types you actually use

The full set favors relevant mace, spear, bow or mixed-damage attacks; evaluate the weapon’s damage components instead of its appearance. It has less armor than Padded equipment and adds the set’s physical weakness. Recommendation: keep Padded gear for learning dangerous close fights and use Vilebone only when the regeneration and relevant offense justify that trade for you.

Mixing a different helmet or chest piece breaks Vilebone wrath, including its physical weakness. The bonus does not add a Fists skill level and does not require any special weapon. It is a worn set status, not an adrenaline activation.

A +25% physical modifier is not a promise of exactly 25% more final health loss after armor. Other resistance effects need their own evaluation; do not assume equipping a power makes this set equivalent to heavy armor. Fresh food, Rested and a recovery plan still matter.

Treat the Maulclaws as a separate Forge 4 project

For the optional Vilebone Maulclaws, set aside 2 additional hides, 2 ribcages, 2 Black metal and 4 Linen thread. These are separate from the armor budget. Follow Blast furnace processing for Black metal; a regular Smelter cannot process its scrap.

Connect Anvils, a Forge cooler and Forge toolrack to reach Forge 4. Crafting one weapon equips the pair, occupies both hands and uses Fists skill. You cannot retain a shield in the other hand. Repairs also need Forge 4, unlike the armor.

Despite “Maul” in the name, the damage is pierce plus slash, not blunt. Vilebone wrath improves the pierce component but does not boost the slash portion. Its short primary combo and secondary kick still require close range; neither a high stagger figure nor a parry multiplier guarantees control of a Vile.

Practice the reach and recovery against familiar enemies before carrying the pair into a night hunt. Retain a bow and your previous weapon. This guide completes the base pair; further weapon upgrades require higher Forge levels and additional metal, so inspect the Upgrade requirements before committing another rare ribcage haul.

Return with a spare outfit and clear the tombstone approach

  1. If the hunt fails, return from home with fresh food, Rested, healing, cold protection and the spare weapon kit. Daylight is recommended for the retrieval route, while ordinary Plains threats still require attention.
  2. Inspect the actual tombstone area. If the Vile remains or another enemy occupies the route, clear or draw it away before recovering equipment; do not assume the clock removed the threat.
  3. Make inventory room, retrieve the important gear and bank it through the separated portal. Repair at the correct stations: Forge 2 for armor, Forge 4 for Maulclaws.
  4. Restore the home reserve and resume core progression or return another prepared night. Keep an incomplete trophy hunt as a marked optional objective rather than forcing repeated deaths for the final piece.

When something goes wrong

I never see a Vile during my daytime Plains errands.

Its natural spawn is a rare night encounter. Scout a known circuit by day, then search prepared after dusk; no individual circuit or night guarantees one.

The trophy will not drop.

It is a chance drop. Bank useful materials and return another night. A Bear trophy cannot substitute for the Vile trophy in the Visage.

The armor crafts but the Maulclaws do not.

Armor needs Forge 2; Maulclaws need Forge 4, Black metal and their own hide/ribcage/thread budget. Connect Anvils, cooler and toolrack and inspect the displayed level.

My sword does not benefit from Vilebone’s damage bonus.

The set improves blunt and pierce, not slash. Use a compatible weapon or choose another outfit; the Maulclaws also have a slash component that the bonus does not improve.
