Before you start
- Use dependable early equipment and the early Cauldron meal and bow preparation. Bronze-stage readiness is a recommendation, not a Bear spawn unlock.
- Bring a repaired bow, Fire arrows, a familiar melee backup and shield, three fresh foods, a torch and material for a fueled campfire. Keep stamina for an escape.
- Leave spare food and equipment at your claimed home bed. For a distant hunt, establish and test a separated return portal before looking for the Bear.
Scout a daylight loop through the Black Forest
Bears are a released Call to Arms enemy. They appear in the Black Forest during both day and night; the spawn reference lists no boss-kill key. Valheim 1.0 reduced Bjorn spawn chance and health, but did not publish new values. Use several marked stretches of forest rather than expecting a den, quest marker or guaranteed respawn at a particular tree.
For the first hunt, travel in daylight and decline starred targets. Daylight still allows a one-star Bear; the stronger two-star possibility belongs to the night search. Look at the actual stars before firing. Bank berries and other useful forest supplies even when the search finds no suitable Bear.
- Choose a forest route close to known open ground and a return shelter. Mark the route and inspect its slopes, water, Trolls and Greydwarf groups before beginning combat.
- When you find a Bear, stop outside its immediate reach. Select a clear area with room to move across its front and then away; avoid a narrow gap between a rock and tree.
- Do not lure it toward your only portal, bed or livestock. If the approach contains several enemies, clear them separately or leave this Bear for a later pass.

Use fire as an aid and leave room to move
Recommended early meals are Deer stew, Minced meat sauce and Carrot soup from the Elder preparation kitchen. Eat before approaching and renew Rested. Later meals and familiar upgraded equipment are welcome; the material hunt does not reward arriving underfed.
Bears are weak to fire and take ordinary slash damage, but resist blunt, pierce and frost; spirit does not help. Fire arrows give an existing bow a useful fire component. A practiced slash backup is preferable to assuming a mace must be best against a large animal.
A Bear avoids close fire but can still attack from beyond that avoidance distance. Keep the torch between you and it when using one, and watch its animation. A lit torch does not make standing still safe. Place a campfire only where it leaves your escape open, keep it fueled and avoid stepping into it yourself.
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 20 × Fire arrow | 8 Wood + 8 Resin + 2 Feathers | Workbench level 2 |
| 1 × Torch | 1 Wood + 1 Resin | Inventory |
| 1 × Campfire | 5 Stone + 2 Wood | Hammer; no station required |

Wait for the complete attack before taking an opening
Start with a ranged shot from the prepared area, then move as it approaches. Take a short shot or melee opening after a missed attack, recover stamina and reassess. These are suggested responses, not frame-perfect timings or a guarantee that your shield can parry the hit.
Break off when a second enemy joins, visibility fails or food is fading. Do not chase into deep water or treat a tree as permanent cover. Return with enough supplies for another controlled attempt.
| Tell | Response |
|---|---|
| Low forward bite | Move across its approach or time a dodge; leave room for the lunge. |
| Rears, then bounds forward with claws | Expect forward travel. Move away from the landing and strike only after it finishes. |
| One or both paws swipe | Watch for the follow-up; do not counter automatically after the first swipe. |
| Rears and slams down without the forward bound | Move out from the body. The slam covers nearby ground, so standing behind it is insufficient. |

Count the haul and reserve the trophy before crafting
Collect Bear hide, Bear paws and any trophy after checking the surroundings. The trophy is a chance drop: a successful hunt can leave the headdress unavailable. Keep actual material counts rather than treating an estimated number of kills as a guarantee.
For the base three-piece armor, reserve 15 Bear hide, 2 Bear paws, 8 Blueberries and 1 Bear trophy. Gather Blueberries from Black Forest bushes; mark productive patches and retain the bushes. The optional fist weapon uses a separate 2 hides, 2 paws and 4 Leather scraps from boars.
A Bear can eat Blueberries but cannot be tamed. Feeding it does not establish a renewable hide farm. Do not spend your armor berries trying to turn it into a pet.
Bear hide, paws and trophy pass ordinary portals under normal settings. Bank them before the next search. If the portal refuses you, check for Copper or Tin ore from the same forest trip; use the hauling route when restricted cargo or world settings require a physical return.

Use Workbench 2 and equip the three actual armor slots
- At home, shelter the Workbench and connect a Chopping block. Open the station and confirm level 2; a distant or unconnected extension does not count.
- Pick up each ingredient to discover its recipe, then craft the intended pieces. Patterns of the Bear is chest armor despite its appearance; the Headdress and Loincloth occupy head and legs.
- Equip all three together for Berserk. Keep your existing cape as appropriate: there is no Bear cape requirement. A different helmet or chest piece breaks the full-set effect.
- Choose whether the first Bear trophy goes into the Headdress or a Bronze Pendant. One trophy cannot fund both; use the first-trinket route before committing a rare drop.
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Chopping block | 10 Wood + 10 Flint | Hammer; within workbench range |
| 1 × Headdress of the Bear | 5 Bear hide + 1 Bear trophy | Workbench level 2 |
| 1 × Patterns of the Bear | 5 Bear hide + 2 Bear paw + 4 Blueberries | Workbench level 2 |
| 1 × Loincloth of the Bear | 5 Bear hide + 4 Blueberries | Workbench level 2 |

Trade protection for regeneration and slash damage deliberately
Berserk is the worn armor status, not a button you activate or a requirement to fill adrenaline. A mixed outfit loses both its full-set benefits and its full-set weakness. The physical modifier does not mean every hit removes exactly 25% more health after armor and other effects.
Recommendation: use the full set when you already avoid the relevant attacks and value its regeneration or slash damage. Keep heavier equipment available when learning a hard encounter. Faster regeneration cannot replace fresh food, Rested or healing, and it does not erase a lethal hit.
If you keep this armor, add a Tanning rack for Workbench 3. Upgrading all three existing pieces to quality 2 takes an additional 6 hides and 2 Blueberries in total; use the Upgrade menu with the pieces in your inventory. Higher qualities need later station extensions, so do not hold up core progression for a full upgrade project. Repairs remain Workbench 2.
| Property | What it means |
|---|---|
| Armor | 7 per piece; 21 total before a cape. No movement penalty from these pieces. |
| Regeneration | +30% health regeneration and +15% stamina regeneration. |
| Outgoing damage | +10% slash and +10% chop; no general bonus to every damage type. |
| Incoming damage | Slight physical weakness: +25% blunt, slash and pierce damage modifier. |
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Tanning rack | 10 Wood + 15 Flint + 20 Leather scraps + 5 Deer hide | Hammer; within workbench range |

Craft the paired fist weapon only if you want its close range
Paws of the Bear is optional. One craft equips both hands, uses the Fists skill and deals slash; you cannot hold a separate shield with it. The primary attack is a short two-hit sequence and the secondary is a kick with greater stagger and knockback. Start with familiar low-risk enemies to learn its reach rather than making another Bear the first practice target.
Take a brief opening instead of forcing both hits, and keep a bow or familiar weapon for situations where getting that close is unsafe. A high parry multiplier is not a promise that its low base block can withstand a particular attack. The armor’s slash bonus can help the weapon, but neither item requires the other.
Craft and repair at Workbench 2. For quality 2, Workbench 3 and an additional 2 Bear hide plus 2 Leather scraps upgrade the existing pair; you do not craft a second pair for the other hand.
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Paws of the Bear | 2 Bear hide + 2 Bear paw + 4 Leather scraps | Workbench level 2 |

Recover with food and the same cleared retreat
- After death, use the home spare kit, eat, renew Rested and return in daylight. Check whether the Bear still controls the tombstone approach before running into it.
- Lure the threat onto the previously selected open ground and use your fire aid and ranged weapon. Clear the immediate approach before opening the tombstone; take room for the recovered inventory.
- Bank recovered valuables, repair and restore home supplies. If repeated hits are ending the attempt, return in your more protective outfit instead of assuming the Bear set is an upgrade you must wear.
You are ready when…

Saved in this browserWhen something goes wrong
No Bear trophy dropped.
The trophy is a chance drop. Bank the hides and paws, search another daylight circuit and avoid escalating to a dangerous starred hunt just to force a result.
The armor recipe is absent or disabled.
Pick up every required ingredient and check a sheltered Workbench shows level 2. The Headdress needs a Bear trophy; Patterns needs Bear paws as well as hide and berries.
Berserk disappeared when I changed a helmet.
It requires Headdress, Patterns and Loincloth together. Mixed pieces lose the regeneration, damage bonus and full-set physical weakness.
The torch did not stop an attack.
Fire avoidance has limits. The Bear can attack from outside its close-fire avoidance area; keep moving according to the attack tell and preserve a clear retreat.
