Hunt serpents for food and recover their sinking scales

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Use a repaired seaworthy boat and bow to hunt serpents in Ocean water at night or during storms. An offshore kill can supply floating meat. For scales and a possible trophy, lure the serpent to a cleared shore, harpoon it into recoverable shallows or onto land, then finish it. Cook the meat on an Iron cooking station before making Serpent stew at Cauldron level 2.

Choose meat or scale recovery, prepare the boat and shore, use bow and harpoon deliberately, then cook stew or craft a shield.

Before you start

  • A practiced sailing route, spare boat/recovery supplies and a safe landing with repairs available.
  • A repaired bow, suitable arrows, three strong foods, Rested and a defensive kit for the chosen shore. Our planned-hunt recommendation is a Longship; a Karve has less margin for mistakes.
  • For scales: an Abyssal harpoon and a tested landing path. For food: three iron and three chains for the large cooking rack, plus a level-2 cauldron.

Decide which drops justify the risk

A short planned hunt with a clear return is preferable to carrying an unrelated cargo load into bad weather. If you already have precious ore aboard, bank it first. The night and storm conditions that produce serpents also make navigation and rescue harder.

Prepare the weapon, landing and backup

For an early attempt, use a repaired Finewood bow and a substantial supply of pierce-damage arrows; Wood arrows are a replenishable fallback. Practise drawing and aiming before fighting from a moving deck. Fire damage does not hurt the serpent, so do not use the Elder’s fire-arrow plan as your default here.

After the Mountain route, Frost arrows are an effective optional upgrade because serpents are weak to frost. Mine obsidian with an Iron pickaxe, collect freeze glands from drakes and feathers from birds, and connect Chopping block, Tanning rack and Adze for Workbench level 4. The recipe below supplies a batch of twenty.

Clear a broad Meadows shore before the hunt, with no steep drop between landing and dry ground. Put the repair workbench and return portal back from the fight, check the ladder, and leave room to drag the serpent without threading trees or buildings. Keep a spare boat or its full build materials at home.

For towing, eat stamina-rich foods without abandoning health and carry prepared Minor stamina mead as a reserve. The existing mead chain supplies the base, Mead ketill and Fermenter. Do not begin a tow at a nearly empty bar or rely on a drink whose cooldown is still active.

Find Ocean water, then keep a retreat open

  1. Check that the map identifies Ocean rather than a shallow coastal biome. Search at night or during a storm and watch behind as well as ahead. Do not promise yourself a spawn from a single lap; mark useful routes and return when supplies or the hull need attention.
  2. Once a serpent follows, keep the boat on the route to your cleared shore or your chosen open-water firing space. Its head draws back before the bite. Keep the hull out of repeated close attacks where possible and adjust course rather than standing still indefinitely to aim.
  3. For meat, shoot from the deck while maintaining a manageable course. In a group, assign a helmsman and shooter. Solo, lower sail as needed to keep control when leaving the rudder, and return to steering before the boat drifts into a bad shoreline.
  4. When the hull, stamina or visibility makes the fight doubtful, stop the hunt and head for the known repair landing. Night-spawned serpents can disappear by day, so a missed opportunity is preferable to following it with a failing ship.

Use a short tow for recoverable scales

Lure the serpent close to the prepared shore before applying the harpoon. A long tow spends stamina while the target resists. When you hit with the harpoon, keep an unobstructed route and controlled speed; interacting with the rudder does not itself break the tether.

With a partner, let one player manage the tether and shore position while the other steers or finishes the serpent. The tethering player must not attack again or switch into an attack with another weapon: that releases it. Keep watching the stamina bar and stop pulling hard before it empties.

Solo, lower the serpent’s health with the bow before the final tow, while avoiding an accidental deep-water kill. Bring it far enough onto the clear beach that you can finish it quickly after releasing the line. It tries to return to water; switching to attack ends the tether, so do not assume it stays pinned while you fight.

Kill it only where you can retrieve the sinking drops. Collect scales, any trophy and meat promptly, then bank them. If the tether repeatedly fails or the shore is unsafe, take a meat-only kill or retreat; diving into deep water is not a reliable way to recover missed scales.

Cook large meat, then make a complete stew

Serpent meat is heavy. Put the haul into ship storage before steering if it encumbers you, then carry small loads to the kitchen. The meat can use a normal portal after you reach one; check any other restricted cargo in the same inventory.

Build the Iron cooking station within workbench range using three iron and three chains. Iron comes from smelted Swamp scrap. Look for chains in Sunken Crypt or Swamp chests; Wraiths also drop them. Chains are loot, not an iron-crafting recipe.

Place two Campfires beneath the long rack, fuel and protect them, and leave smoke ventilation. Cook Serpent meat on this larger station and remove it when ready. The ordinary wooden rack does not fit it. Save the cooked slices for stew or eat one directly as a health food.

At a cauldron connected to its Spice rack for level 2, combine one Cooked serpent meat, one ordinary red Mushroom and two Honey for one Serpent stew. Gather mushrooms in the Meadows or Black Forest and collect honey from your beehives. Repeat for the number of meals you need, keeping two other different food types alongside the stew.

Choose the shield or another Ocean project

Eight scales, four iron and ten fine wood make the base Serpent scale shield at Forge level 3. Connect two different extensions, such as Anvils and Forge cooler, then confirm the level. It is a tower shield: it cannot parry, slows movement while equipped and provides pierce resistance while blocking. Choose it for that style of defense; it is not a required replacement for a practiced round-shield loadout.

If the serpent dropped a trophy, one trophy and twenty basic Haldor bait make twenty Heavy fishing bait at the Food preparation table. The Ocean fishing section explains Tuna, Coral cod and the possible chitin bonus. The trophy is consumed when making bait, so reserve it deliberately.

Restock arrows, meads and food, repair the hull and store the next boat’s construction materials separately. If a hunt ended in a wreck, return with a boat to the marked site: cargo crates float, but some ship parts sink. Recover your grave and accessible cargo before attempting another serpent.

When something goes wrong

No serpent appears.

Search actual Ocean water during night or storm conditions rather than circling one shallow bay. Spawns are not guaranteed; go home when food, Rested or repair margin runs low.

The harpoon keeps releasing the serpent.

Check stamina, distance and obstacles. Attacking again breaks the tether; try a shorter tow near the prepared beach and use a partner if available.

Only meat remains after the offshore kill.

Meat floats while scales and the possible trophy sink. Use the shore method on the next hunt; do not budget on retrieving deep-water drops.

The meat will not cook or the stew is missing.

Use the Iron cooking station with adequate fire underneath for raw Serpent meat. Stew then needs the cooked slice, normal Mushroom, Honey and Cauldron level 2.

The new shield will not parry.

That is tower-shield behavior. Use it for sustained blocking with sufficient health/stamina, or return to your practiced round shield for parries.

Keep the result useful

Use the success check to finish this job, restock any reserves you used and return to the supporting journeys or your current boss objective.
