Mine Leviathan chitin and return before it sinks

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Sail a repaired Karve or Longship with a pickaxe and locate a rocky, barnacle-covered Leviathan in the Ocean. Park close with a clear path to the ladder, mine barnacles, and return to the boat as soon as the creature warns and shakes. At a sheltered Workbench level 2, use thirty chitin, eight fine wood and three leather scraps for the Abyssal harpoon.

Prepare a boat and pickaxe, identify the living island, leave on its warning, and spend chitin on a harpoon or optional knife.

Optional supporting guide · Research-based · Pre-1.0 mechanics reference; 1.0 compatibility is not yet verified · Version & review context

Before you start

  • Practical sailing and a recovery reserve; a repaired Karve or Longship, bow/ammunition and a known safe landing.
  • Any repaired pickaxe, three foods, Rested, spare inventory capacity and enough stamina to board the boat.
  • For the harpoon: a sheltered Workbench level 2, fine wood and leather scraps. Fishing equipment is not needed for the mining trip.

Choose the purchase before leaving port

Our first chitin target is the Abyssal harpoon for later serpent-scale recovery. Its base craft consumes thirty chitin. The optional Abyssal razor knife consumes another twenty; do not spend the harpoon stock on the knife if towing is the reason for this trip.

Any pickaxe, including the Antler pickaxe, can mine Abyssal barnacles. Bring the best one you already maintain rather than delaying the expedition for an unnecessary mining tier. A nearby Chopping block raises the home workbench to level 2 for both chitin items; repairs and crafting need a usable sheltered bench.

Use the boat and storage checklist before departure. Carry bow ammunition for an unexpected serpent, keep ordinary return food and a rescue boat budget at home, and leave space for the new material.

Treat the living island as a temporary work surface

  1. Search Ocean water in manageable daylight conditions. A Leviathan resembles a small rocky island covered with barnacles. Mark it when found; there is no guaranteed short route or required compass direction.
  2. Bring the boat close enough for a short return while leaving clearance for waves and the hull. Stop sailing, identify the ladder and refill stamina before stepping onto the shell. If boarding or returning already looks unreliable, reposition the boat before mining.
  3. Inspect the barnacles and the path back. You cannot build a portal, workbench or shelter on the Leviathan. Keep the boat as your escape; do not assume that the island remains after you start harvesting.

Leave on the first warning

  1. Mine the barnacle with the pickaxe and collect the dropped chitin. Keep track of the boat and your remaining stamina instead of crossing to every distant node.
  2. Mining can disturb the Leviathan. When it makes its warning noise and shakes, stop harvesting and take the prepared route back aboard. The warning begins a sinking sequence; another promising barnacle is not worth losing the boat access.
  3. Use the ladder and sail clear. If forced into the water, head for the nearby ladder instead of chasing floating loot. Swimming spends stamina and does not let it regenerate, which is why the short escape matters.
  4. Return the chitin to storage before searching for another Leviathan. A submerged Leviathan does not respawn, so mark the location as spent. An incomplete batch means another expedition, not waiting beside the same empty water.

Craft a harpoon and understand its limits

At the home bench, combine thirty chitin with eight fine wood and three leather scraps. Chop birch or oak with the Bronze axe for fine wood; hunt boars or use your herd for scraps. Chitin itself can pass through a normal wood portal.

The harpoon is a utility spear. Its Attack action latches onto a non-boss creature; distance puts tension on the line and pulls the creature while draining stamina. Another attack, running empty, excessive distance or an obstructed path can release the target. It does not work as a fishing rod.

Use the serpent guide before attempting a tow. If you instead want the Abyssal razor, craft the optional knife with twenty chitin, four fine wood and two scraps, then practise its short reach on safe ground. These are separate uses of the same stock.

Recover with a boat, not a long swim

If the ship is destroyed, mark the wreck and return with another suitable boat, food and protection. Cargo may remain in floating crates while nails and other construction materials sink; do not depend on rebuilding the rescue ship from an unreachable wreck.

If you die, restore your food and gear from the home reserve, then use the cargo and grave-recovery route. Retrieve the accessible equipment first. The vanished Leviathan is not a recoverable platform for a second attempt.

Later, a recovered Serpent trophy makes Heavy fishing bait for Coral cod. Those catches can occasionally provide chitin. This renewable option is slower and depends on the separate Ocean fishing loop.

When something goes wrong

The pickaxe shows no useful progress.

Aim at an Abyssal barnacle, not the shell. Any pickaxe tier works on the barnacle; the Leviathan itself is not a mineable rock.

The creature sinks before I have thirty chitin.

Leave on the warning and bank the partial haul. Search for another Leviathan with a repaired pickaxe and the same exit plan; no single island is promised to supply the entire craft.

I cannot place a portal on the island.

Building on a Leviathan is unavailable. Use a portal at an actual shore base and your boat for the offshore leg.

The harpoon recipe is unavailable at home.

Collect all three ingredients, connect the Chopping block and confirm Workbench level 2. Shelter the bench for crafting and repairs.
