Before you start
- Haldor located and 360 coins for a rod plus one bundle of 20 basic bait; the rod is purchased, not crafted.
- Three active foods with a useful stamina pool, Rested, a defensive weapon and free inventory space. Start on a manageable Meadows shore.
- For eating the catch: a Food preparation table, which requires iron, plus a Cooking station and fire. You can catch fish earlier and store them until this kitchen is ready.
Start with visible fish and a safe place to stand
Look for Perch or Pike around Meadows or Black Forest water; both take basic Fishing bait. Choose a spot where you can see fish close to shore and can step away from enemies. A long cast into empty water adds waiting and stamina cost without finding a fish for you.
Eat before casting, wait for stamina to refill and keep the weapon accessible. For a safe early shore, our recommendation is two stamina foods and one health food from your existing food supply. A caught fish is not worth running out of stamina in deep water. Rested helps recovery between attempts; it does not erase the drain of a hooked fish.
If you find a fish stranded above the water, collect it with Interact. A bow, spear or harpoon cannot damage fish into catchable loot. Move to another patch once the visible school is depleted instead of casting indefinitely into the same empty spot.

Cast short, hook the bite, and collect the fish
- Equip the Fishing rod and select basic Fishing bait in the inventory with the equip/use action. Check the selected bait, especially if you also carry a special bait. The rod needs bait in your inventory.
- Hold the Attack action to charge a cast and release to send the bobber out. Use a short charge so it lands near the visible fish. Longer is not better for a first catch.
- Watch the bobber. When a bite pulls it under, promptly press Block to hook the fish, then hold Block to reel. These are action names; use your configured controller or keyboard bindings.
- Ease off reeling while the fish splashes and struggles, then reel when it settles. A hooked fish still drains stamina while you pause, so this is a way to reduce waste, not to wait indefinitely for a full refill. If catches repeatedly escape, shorten the next cast, choose a smaller fish and improve your food.
- Once the fish reaches you, aim at it and use Interact when its pickup prompt appears. Stay on the bank or deck rather than chasing it into deep water. Check the inventory before casting again.

Whole fish, Raw fish and Cooked fish are separate items
Build the Food preparation table within workbench range: five iron, twenty fine wood and fifteen leather scraps. The first-iron guide supplies its metal chain; the Bronze axe supplies fine wood from birch or oak. Meeting the Bog Witch is not required to build it.
At the table, choose the processing recipe for the fish and quality you actually caught. A quality-1 Perch becomes one Raw fish; larger fish and some other species yield more. Keep any whole fish earmarked for another named-fish recipe separate before processing the rest.
Put Raw fish on a Cooking station over a lit fire. Take it off when cooked so it does not become coal. You now have Cooked fish, a health-food option; keep two other different foods active. If the fire keeps going out, protect it from rain while leaving ventilation for smoke.
Store the remaining catch in a chest between trips. Whole fish can pass through normal portals, but any bonus ore caught with a fish can make the inventory fail the portal check. Inspect restricted-item icons and use the cargo guide rather than discarding the fish.

Upgrade the meal when the Plains kitchen is ready
A simple later use for the same catches is Fish wraps. Cook two Raw fish into two Cooked fish, mill four surplus barley into four Barley flour, and combine them at Cauldron level 4. This makes one serving; it does not go through the oven.
For that station level, connect Spice rack, Butcher’s table and Pots and pans. The Plains farm and processing guide supplies barley, the Windmill and the kitchen extensions. Keep the farm’s planting grain before milling the meal budget.

Use a recovered trophy for Ocean fishing later
After a serpent hunt yields a trophy, combine it with twenty basic bait at the Food preparation table to make twenty Heavy fishing bait. Equip that bait to catch Tuna or Coral cod in Ocean schools. This is a separate target from basic-bait shore fishing; it does not require a chain of earlier biome fish.
Fish from a repaired boat in calm daylight after practising its ladder and rudder. Stop the boat before casting, keep spare stamina for getting back aboard, and leave when a serpent or dangerous weather interrupts. Coral cod can occasionally add chitin to the catch, providing a later repeatable alternative to Leviathan mining; it is a bonus, not a guaranteed yield.

The fish approaches but will not bite.
Check the equipped bait and target species. Use basic bait for Perch/Pike; Heavy bait for Tuna/Coral cod. Move the bobber closer to a visible school.
Every hooked fish empties my stamina.
Refill before casting, shorten the line and choose smaller fish. Reel in calm phases but remember that a hooked fish continues draining while paused. A prepared Minor stamina mead can help an attempt; food and cast distance still determine whether the attempt is sensible.
The Cooking station refuses my catch.
Process the named whole fish into Raw fish at the Food preparation table first. The table needs iron; store early catches until it is built.
An enemy interrupts or I fall off the boat.
Stop fishing and use the cleared retreat or boat ladder. Preserve stamina for reaching safety; recover lost equipment later with food and a suitable boat rather than swimming out from shore.
