Block, parry and dodge

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Eat, restore Rested and repair before practising against one ordinary Meadows enemy on open ground. Hold block to learn the attack, then raise a parrying shield just before impact and take one short counterattack. If your defense fails or another enemy arrives, make space instead of repeating the trade. Use a deliberate dodge when a hit is unsuitable for your shield; always retain enough stamina and room to leave.

Choose a shield, separate a failed block from a mistimed parry, and practice defensive timing with food, room and a recovery plan.

Optional supporting guide · Research-based · Pre-1.0 mechanics reference; 1.0 compatibility is not yet verified · Version & review context

Before you start

  • A claimed spawn bed, spare food and equipment at home, and a short clear return route. Practice outside the workshop and animal pens.
  • Follow food and Rested first. Our starting recommendation is two available health foods and one stamina food, with the food effects refreshed and your actual health recovered before contact.
  • A repaired one-handed weapon and Wood shield are sufficient to begin learning the controls. Use your current biome equipment for later encounters; the bronze equipment route supplies a Bronze buckler when ready.

Find the actions before inviting an attack

  1. Open settings and inspect your Keyboard & Mouse or Controller layout for block, jump/dodge, movement and attack. On default keyboard controls, hold right mouse to block; hold block, choose a movement direction and press Space to roll. Use the displayed bindings if yours differ.
  2. Equip the actual weapon and shield you will use. In a clear patch, raise and release the shield, roll toward open ground and return to a standing position. Check that the roll goes where you intended.
  3. Choose the retreat direction now. Avoid water, steep edges, roof supports and doors you cannot open quickly. Leave ore and excess loot at home so the inventory is below its carry limit.

Match the shield to the action you want to practise

One attack · three choices

Choose the defense, then keep a way out

Held block

  1. Raise and hold the shield keep it up for contact
  2. Check health, stagger and stamina

Use it to learn a familiar attack. Holding from the wind-up is an ordinary block; it does not guarantee zero damage.

Timed block / parry

  1. Watch the attack
  2. Raise a parrying shield just before contact
  3. Read the reaction; counter only if clear

Check that your equipped item can parry. Tower shields cannot; bosses do not give the ordinary stagger-and-counter opening.

Directed dodge

  1. Choose open ground
  2. Roll to a deliberate landing
  3. Face the attacker and reassess

Begin with enough stamina. Brief protection does not cover the whole roll or a lingering hazard; a jump alone is not a dodge.

Another threat, unsafe health or no exit? Make space and reset the encounter.

Conceptual action sequence, not a measured timing window. Learn one ordinary enemy with food, repaired equipment and room to retreat; use the enemy’s own guide for attack-specific limits.

A shield replaces the paired weapon’s blocking statistics; their block armor and parry bonuses do not add together. Compare block armor at the actual item quality as well as its parry bonus. Block force describes knockback, not the amount of damage the shield absorbs.

For this route, start with the shield you can already craft and repair. Wood shield uses a sheltered Workbench; Bronze buckler uses a sheltered Forge. The shared cards give their materials. A Banded shield is a later round-shield option from iron equipment preparation.

Separate stamina, stagger and lost health

A block reduces incoming damage; it is not immunity. Insufficient stamina can make it fail. A block can also overload your stagger bar: the limit depends on your current maximum health from food, while the incoming hit and effective block armor determine the pressure on it. Armor worn on the body does not replace a capable shield.

Maximum health sets defensive capacity; remaining health is what you can still afford to lose. Replenish both before a serious attempt. If repeated blocks are nearly filling the stagger bar, our recommendation is to disengage and reset rather than fit another attack into the exchange.

Raise the shield for impact, then take a short opening

A successful parry improves block armor and normally staggers a susceptible attacker. The released Call to Arms update removed its stamina cost; a failed attempt still needs a fallback. Staggered non-player enemies take double damage, while staggered players do not receive that damage multiplier. Stagger duration varies: watch the recovery instead of using a fixed countdown.

Bosses are immune to stagger. A defensible boss attack can still benefit from a timed block, but it will not produce the ordinary stun-and-counter opportunity. Use the specific boss guide for its openings.

  1. Find one ordinary Greyling in daylight near your prepared route. Watch an attack from just outside its reach. End the attempt if a second threat joins; this is a timing exercise, not a pack fight.
  2. Face it and hold block before the next attack. Observe the wind-up and the moment the strike arrives. If this held block already leaves you in danger, stop and improve preparation before trying tighter timing.
  3. For the next attempt, release block after the previous attack finishes, then raise it just before contact. Listen for the distinctive parry sound and watch the enemy’s reaction. Holding block from the start of the wind-up remains an ordinary block.
  4. After a clear opening, make one primary attack, then stop and reposition. Increase the follow-up only after the first strike and escape are comfortable. A counterattack is optional when another danger is approaching.

Dodge the hit and choose where you finish

A roll gives brief protection against attacks that can be dodged; the entire animation is not a promise of safety. It also spends stamina, and equipment movement penalties affect its cost. Start the roll with enough stamina available and aim for clear ground. A jump on its own is not the same action.

Call to Arms added a stamina refund when the dodge avoids an attack that would have damaged you. Rolling through empty space is useful for learning movement, but does not trigger that perfect-dodge refund. The Dodge skill reduces roll cost; actual evasion earns more skill experience than an empty roll. Treat the refund as a benefit after success, not stamina you can spend in advance.

  1. Practise the directional input without an enemy first. Then return to the same isolated encounter and watch the strike approach before committing to one roll.
  2. Finish beside open ground with the attacker in view. Pause before attacking again; check stamina and whether the enemy is beginning another move.
  3. If you roll too early, focus on the actual strike instead of the first wind-up motion. If you roll into water or a wall, change the fighting area before repeating the timing exercise.
  4. Use ordinary movement when it cleanly avoids the attack. Save rolls for a threatening hit or useful repositioning instead of chaining them until the bar is empty.

Do not turn one learned move into a universal defense

Successful blocks train Blocking, and parries award additional experience. There is no required skill level to finish this guide. The useful result is a repeatable defense and withdrawal with the kit you actually own. For controlled weapon practice, continue to the training yard. Optional trinkets can reward successful defenses with adrenaline, but are not required to learn them.

  • Some ranged attacks can be parried, including a Draugr arrow and the Charred Marksman’s direct shot. Judge the projectile’s arrival, not only the shooter’s release. Our recommendation is to use movement and cover while learning a new ranged enemy.
  • Different attacks from the same creature can have different defenses. A Cultist’s flame burst cannot be blocked or parried; its claw attacks can. Follow the Frost Cave route before taking the drill into that environment.
  • A volley, lingering hazard or second attacker can outlast one good defensive action. Leave the danger area rather than assuming a successful roll or parry covers the entire sequence.
  • Learn the unstarred enemy first. Do not deliberately seek a starred enemy, boss, wolf pack or raid to accelerate early Blocking or Dodge levels.

Finish while you still have a recovery route

  1. Stop when health is becoming unsafe, food or Rested needs renewal, equipment needs repair, another enemy arrives, or you lose clear footing. Move along the prepared route and recover before starting another encounter.
  2. If killed, eat the reserved food, restore Rested and equip the spare kit. Approach the tombstone from known ground with enough inventory room for the recovery.
  3. If the enemy still controls the grave, draw it away only where you keep an exit, or retreat and strengthen the rescue kit. Do not repeat an empty-handed run through the same failed approach.
  4. After recovering, return home and repair. Change the cause of failure—food, shield, timing, crowd or terrain—before trying again. Use the wider recovery checklist if your spawn shelter or access was also damaged.

When something goes wrong

I never hear the parry sound.

Check that the equipped item can parry, release block between attempts and raise it near impact. Return to the ordinary held-block drill if attempts are costing unsafe health.

My roll fails after collecting the loot.

Check the carry limit as well as available stamina. The released game prevents dodging while overencumbered; bank or unload the excess in a safe place.

The boss keeps moving after a good timed block.

Bosses do not stagger. Defend its next attack and take the openings in that boss’s guide instead of expecting the Greyling counter pattern.

I can defend but have no stamina to attack afterward.

Shorten your attacks and movement bursts, refresh food and Rested, and reset between exchanges. Continue to the weapon-and-stamina guide below.
