Build a training yard and practise before the next fight

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Start with the training tool that solves your immediate problem: an Archery target for aim, or a Wooden sword and T.W.I.G. for melee timing. The sword is craftable at a Workbench; the other wooden weapons are chest finds. T.W.I.G. needs Ectoplasm from Ghosts as well as Finewood and Bronze nails. Short practice is optional: return to exploration once you can defend, take a brief opening and leave with stamina.

Craft a Wooden sword, build an Archery target or T.W.I.G., and practise timing, stamina and aim with a clear stopping point.

Complete the resource chain

For one base Wooden sword, one Archery target and one T.W.I.G. together, reserve 5 ordinary Wood, 12 Fine wood, 2 Core wood, 10 Leather scraps, 10 Bronze nails and 5 Ectoplasm. This total excludes the workshop, tools, bow, arrows and food. Making one nail batch leaves 10 nails in storage.

  1. Cut ordinary trees for Wood, Black Forest pine for Corewood, and birch or oak with a Bronze axe or better for Finewood. The first Bronze equipment route covers these wood unlocks. Hunt boars or use your established boar supply for Leather scraps.
  2. For T.W.I.G., use the Forge to turn one Bronze into a batch of 20 Bronze nails. The dummy consumes 10; store the other 10. The mining route and smelting route cover the Copper, Tin, coal, cores and Forge dependencies.
  3. Search Burial Chambers for Ghosts while following the core-gathering dungeon route. Bring your real combat kit, food and lighting. Clear a manageable approach, allow the Ghost’s swipe to finish and take a short opening before withdrawing. Ghosts resist all three physical damage types, so a club is not a special weakness exploit against them.
  4. Pick up Ectoplasm and bank it between trips until you have five. A Ghost is not guaranteed in every chamber; explore another chamber rather than repeatedly waiting in a cleared room. Do not substitute a Ghost trophy or a Wraith’s Chain. If collecting Ectoplasm would interrupt essential progression, use the Archery target first.

Craft the sword and place a small yard

T.W.I.G. attacks nearby players and can provoke your tamed creatures. It does not defend the yard against hostile creatures. Treat the area as part of your normal base-defense plan, and leave practice when a real threat arrives.

  1. Carry 5 Wood, 3 Finewood and 2 Corewood to a sheltered level-1 Workbench and craft the Wooden sword. You do not need to upgrade it for these drills.
  2. Choose clear ground within Workbench range, separated from your bed, portal, storage and animal pens. Keep a direct exit to the rest spot. Place one target, one dummy or both with the Hammer using the shared build recipes below; they are not items in the Workbench Craft list.
  3. Aim the shooting lane toward empty ground and leave a clear path for collecting ammunition. Keep the dummy far enough from that path that approaching the target will not put you into its attack range.
  4. Put the real weapon in a clearly separate slot and store the practice weapon in a labeled chest after the session. Keep a Hammer available to repair damaged practice structures. If a structure loses durability quickly, pause and check whether you equipped a real weapon by mistake.

Practise one decision at a time

The aim is reliable inputs and a retreat reserve. Skills can rise through matching actions, but a practice result is not proof you can parry a Troll, a starred enemy or a boss. Do not remain in range unattended; food can decay, health can fall and equipment can break.

  1. Eat and get Rested, equip the intended shield or weapon, then approach one T.W.I.G. with a clear exit behind you. Observe its attack before adding your own swings.
  2. Use the defense guide to practise ordinary facing blocks, then a timed parry with an item that can parry. Reset your position and resources between attempts. A tower shield is for blocking rather than this parry drill.
  3. Practise a dodge against the incoming attack, then move out and reset. Rolling in empty space is not a qualifying Perfect Dodge; the avoided attack must otherwise have hit you.
  4. Add one short attack after defending and then withdraw. Try the secondary attack separately so you can see its movement, reach and recovery without reflexively chaining another input.
  5. Finish when you can repeat the defend–attack–leave sequence without exhausting stamina. Restore health and repair equipment at the Workbench or its appropriate crafting station before returning to a normal expedition.

Learn your bow’s aim and retrieve target hits

Iron Gate describes center scoring and recovery for both arrows and bolts. The community target reference reports reduced bow experience; use the target for aim and ammunition reuse rather than a promised fastest leveling route. No exact XP multiplier or time to a skill level is assumed here.

  1. Equip your actual bow and inexpensive Wood arrows. Stand at a repeatable spot, aim at the target center and draw fully before releasing. Watch where the shot lands, then adjust the next shot from the same spot.
  2. Move to a second distance only after the first becomes predictable. Keep enough stamina to stop drawing and move away; this is also a chance to notice when you hold the draw longer than necessary.
  3. Stop shooting, approach the target along the clear route and use its on-screen interaction to retrieve the arrows or bolts lodged in it. Return to the same firing spot and repeat. Budget for misses: target recovery is a special facility, not a rule that ordinary shots into terrain, enemies or T.W.I.G. are recoverable.
  4. If you already use a crossbow, bring it and its matching bolts for a separate loading-and-aim exercise. You do not need to craft a late-game crossbow to complete this early yard.

Keep other wooden weapons found during normal exploration

Only the Wooden sword has the base craft used above. Having enough wood does not unlock recipes for the other eight. Save finds as you encounter them, and use the existing biome and dungeon guides to reach their locations with appropriate protection.

For friendly sparring, agree on a stop signal and use the actual wooden practice weapons described in the release notes. Do not assume a low-damage weapon makes falls, surrounding enemies or changing to a real weapon harmless. This route makes no promise about experience with PvP disabled; use T.W.I.G. for the solo drills.

Leave with the right equipment and recover if practice goes wrong

  1. Repair, refill food and restore Rested, then put the wooden weapon away and explicitly equip the real expedition weapon. Check ammunition and the shield before leaving.
  2. Try the same short defend–attack–leave sequence against an isolated enemy you already handle on known ground. If it fails, identify whether the problem was timing, resource use or the enemy’s strength; return to the relevant drill without turning the next boss into a test dummy.
  3. If you die, use the prepared recovery route with food, Rested and the spare kit. Approach the yard from outside the dummy’s attack area and recover the grave when you can leave again. Re-equip recovered armor and weapons in the safe rest spot.
  4. If a raid damaged the yard, repair the shelter, workbench and escape route before rebuilding practice furniture. Restore and verify a destroyed bed’s spawn claim and the return portal before another resource trip.

When something goes wrong

The Workbench has no Archery target or T.W.I.G. recipe.

They belong to the Hammer build menu. Handle every required material and stand within Workbench range; the sword is the inventory craft.

I cannot craft the Wooden atgeir or another practice weapon.

The Wooden sword is the craftable option. The others are chest loot at the listed locations; collecting wood alone does not unlock them.

I lost ammunition while practising.

Collect ammunition that hit the Archery target through its interaction. Misses and shots into T.W.I.G. do not inherit the target’s recovery facility. Carry inexpensive ammunition and inspect the selected type.

A successful dummy parry did not work on the next enemy.

Attack strength, your shield, food, stamina and timing still matter. Use the defense guide to decide whether that actual attack should be blocked, parried or avoided.

My pets keep attacking the dummy.

Move the practice area away from animal pens and travel paths. T.W.I.G. can provoke tamed creatures; it is not a base-defense turret.

Keep the result useful

Use the success check to finish this job, restock any reserves you used and return to the supporting journeys or your current boss objective.
