Before you start
- Use the Swamp preparation guide for current food, Rested, poison resistance mead, healing supplies and a tested return portal on safer ground. Reserve the same basics at home for recovery.
- A repaired Bronze axe, a practiced shield and enough stamina to evade. Bring a bow and Fire arrows if choosing the ranged method. Iron equipment can help but is not a crafting requirement for Root armor.
- A sheltered Workbench with Chopping block at home. Keep your current armor: you need it to earn the first roots, and it becomes the spare kit afterward.
Buy a useful resistance before buying the whole set
Root armor is optional. If your present kit handles crypts well and hunts are going badly, continue the first-iron route instead of delaying progression for a full set. A bow skill bonus is not a reason to turn Bonemass into a bow fight.
| Choice | Useful result | Limit |
|---|---|---|
| Harnesk first | Pierce resistance from the chest alone. Our default while poison mead is already supplied. | Lower general armor than an iron chest; no special blunt or slash protection. |
| Mask first | Always-on poison resistance while equipped. Useful for routine gathering between mead doses. | Weaker than poison resistance mead; keep the mead for dangerous poison encounters. |
| All three pieces | The complete mask, harnesk and leggings grant +15 Bows skill. | The leggings are needed for the set bonus, not for either individual resistance. Every piece introduces fire weakness. |

Find one without turning the hunt into a chase
- Scout a Swamp in daylight along ground you have already crossed. Look for a broad stump-like shape in shallow open areas; an Abomination rises when approached. There is no guaranteed spawn at every crypt or fixed short search route.
- Before closing in, clear nearby ordinary enemies and mark a withdrawal direction toward safer ground. Keep the fight away from the return portal, boat and bed.
- When the creature rises, back onto the chosen fighting area. If Draugr, blobs or another threat join, retreat along the known route and separate them before trying again. Do not spend the entire stamina bar sprinting through unexplored water.
- Treat each encounter as a separate trip if necessary. Repair and replace food at home instead of carrying every previous root through the next hunt.
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Bronze axe | 4 Wood + 8 Bronze + 2 Leather scraps | Forge level 1 |
| 1 × Finewood bow | 10 Fine wood + 10 Core wood + 2 Deer hide | Workbench level 1 |
| 20 × Fire arrow | 8 Wood + 8 Resin + 2 Feathers | Workbench level 2 |
| 6 × Poison resistance mead | 1 Mead base: Poison resistance | Fermenter |
| 1 × Portal | 20 Fine wood + 10 Greydwarf eye + 2 Surtling core | Hammer; within workbench range |

Wait for the attack, then take a short opening
Abominations resist blunt and strongly resist pierce. An axe works through its slash damage; this is not a tree-chopping bonus. Fire is a weakness, making Fire arrows a workable alternative to ordinary arrows. Keep the mace for enemies that suit it.
- For our melee approach, start with one attack after a clear miss and reposition. Add a longer combo only when the opening and remaining stamina support it. Avoid backing into deep water or a standing tree.
- For a ranged attempt, fire from the cleared route and move before the creature reaches you. Pause shooting to recover stamina. If the route fills with enemies or arrows run low, leave and restock rather than circling blindly.
- If your health becomes unsafe, use the prepared retreat. Do not detour toward a fire geyser you have not scouted; its fire and nearby enemies can endanger you as well. Environmental fire is an optional tactic, not a dependency for this guide.
| What you see | Response to practice |
|---|---|
| Right limb sweeps across the ground | Move clear of the swing, then take a short axe opening. Leave stamina for its next action. |
| Left limb lifts for a heavy stomp | Move out from under the raised limb before it lands. Do not approach merely because the right side stopped moving. |
| Body lifts while you are underneath | Leave the centre before the body slam. Staying between its legs is not a permanent safe spot. |
| Your block staggers you or nearly empties stamina | Stop trading blows. Withdraw and use evasion or the ranged method; a shield name alone does not guarantee a safe parry. |

Bring roots and bark home in separate, manageable loads
- Collect the Root drops after clearing the immediate area. An ordinary Abomination drops five at the default resource rate: two successful kills supply one base piece, six supply all three. Count actual inventory if your world changes resource rates.
- Cut Swamp Ancient trees with the Bronze axe or better and break their fallen logs for Ancient bark. Roots for the armor do not come from chopping ordinary roots or from the Elder’s summoned roots. Bark yield varies; count the material instead of assuming a fixed number of trees.
- Gather Deer hide from Meadows deer and Leather scraps from boars. The boar supply guide covers a renewable source.
- Return roots through the ordinary portal and bank them. If a portal refuses the trip, check the rest of your inventory for restricted cargo using the transport checklist. Recover floating roots from shallow reach; do not swim into an active fight for a dropped stack.

Craft at Workbench level 2 and keep a spare kit
- Shelter the workbench and connect a Chopping block. Open the bench and confirm level 2; a second workbench or duplicate chopping block does not add another level.
- For the first harnesk, bring ten Root, ten Ancient bark and two Deer hide. Craft and equip it, retaining your previous chest in the home recovery box.
- If choosing the full base set, reserve thirty Root, thirty Ancient bark, four Leather scraps and four Deer hide altogether. These totals exclude the workbench and its extension. Use the individual recipe cards below to avoid confusing Deer hide with Leather scraps.
- Repair the pieces at the sheltered level-2 bench before departure; repair uses no replacement ingredients. If you later upgrade a piece, use the Upgrade tab and inspect its higher station/material requirements. Keep repair capacity and spare equipment ahead of optional quality upgrades.
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Workbench | 10 Wood | Hammer; no station required |
| 1 × Chopping block | 10 Wood + 10 Flint | Hammer; within workbench range |
| 1 × Root harnesk | 10 Root + 10 Ancient bark + 2 Deer hide | Workbench level 2 |
| 1 × Root mask | 10 Root + 10 Ancient bark + 4 Leather scraps | Workbench level 2 |
| 1 × Root leggings | 10 Root + 10 Ancient bark + 2 Deer hide | Workbench level 2 |

Match the armor to the damage you will face
The mask does not replace poison resistance mead for the Bonemass plan. Mead supplies stronger protection and must be active before poison is applied; putting on the mask or drinking after poisoning does not undo the existing effect. The two protections do not multiply.
Any Root piece brings fire weakness. For an early Swamp trip, keep away from Surtling fire and your own exposed fires. For Cultist caves or later fire-heavy areas, our default is to change out of Root pieces before departure. If deliberately retaining the harnesk later, use the barley and fire-resistance preparation route and keep the resistance active before taking fire damage. Do not assume being in a wet biome is a complete fire plan.
The harnesk can remain useful against piercing attacks in later biomes, but it does not protect against every move made by those enemies. Check the tradeoff against your current higher-armor chest. Changing the mask or leggings preserves the harnesk’s individual effect but removes the full-set bow bonus.

Recover equipment before replacing it
- After a death, eat the reserved food, equip the previous armor and take fresh poison mead before returning. Restore Rested and use the established portal; do not make the first return an unprepared sprint.
- Approach the grave along the cleared route. If the Abomination is still guarding it, draw it away only where you retain an exit, or retreat and improve the rescue kit. A grave is not permission to absorb another slam.
- Recover the load when there is room to carry it and return to the base before another hunt. Follow the recovery checklist if the portal or shelter was also lost; rebuild, claim and check a replacement bed when necessary.
- Replace lost Root pieces through the same hunt only after the route and food reserve work again. The spare ordinary armor lets you recover without needing a second complete Root set.

I cut tree roots but did not get the armor material.
The item named Root drops from Abominations. Ancient trees supply the separate Ancient bark ingredient.
My iron mace barely hurts the creature.
It resists blunt. Use a practiced slash weapon such as the Bronze axe, or Fire arrows with a workable retreat route.
The mask is equipped but poison still hurts.
Resistance is not immunity. Use poison resistance mead before dangerous exposure; it is stronger than the mask, and neither fixes poisoning already applied.
I have three pieces but the crafting list is missing one.
Collect each exact ingredient, including scraps for the mask versus deer hide for chest/legs, and verify the sheltered bench is level 2.
I lose the bow bonus when changing my helmet.
The bonus needs all three Root armor pieces. Keep a mixed set only for its individual effects and chosen armor tradeoff.
Keep the result useful
Use the success check to finish this job, restock any reserves you used and return to the supporting journeys or your current boss objective.
