Find Dyrnwyn’s fragments and defeat Lord Reto

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Read a Mysterious Location Vegvisir in a Putrid Hole. Follow the markers to the tip altar, the blade altar and finally Lord Reto’s tomb. Store the earlier fragments before the fight. Reto’s sword attacks include delayed feints: move completely out of reach, wait for the strike to finish, and take short openings instead of relying on a routine parry or early roll.

Follow the three Mysterious Locations, secure the tip and blade, and survive Lord Reto’s delayed sword attacks to recover the hilt.

Before you start

  • A sustainable Ashlands landing and a repaired combat kit. This is an optional sword quest; you can continue toward Fader without it.
  • Three active foods, Rested, healing and stamina supplies, a Black metal pickaxe, Hammer and a protected return portal with recovery equipment at home.
  • A safe place to store unique fragments. The follow-up craft also needs a Bloodstone from fortress loot, smelted Flametal and Black forge level 4.

Prepare for several trips, then leave the fragments behind

Our suggested melee setup uses your maintained Ashlands armor and a familiar sword such as Nidhögg. Bring Fiery svinstew, Meat platter and Spicy marmalade for two health foods and one stamina food. Their shared recipes and the Ashlands equipment guide cover ingredients and stations. This is a practical starting choice, not a guarantee that Reto’s attacks can be survived.

Reserve a complete refill of food and consumables at the return base. Test the portal from both ends, mark its location and keep its exit clear of enemies. Extend that network as the quest takes you across the biome. Avoid an unfamiliar lava shortcut; use the mount route only if you already have a spare trained animal and safe landings.

Deposit each recovered fragment before the next expedition. Do not carry your already-secured tip and blade into Reto’s tomb. In multiplayer, agree which chest stores the shared quest items and who will eventually use the sword.

Search Putrid Holes for a Mysterious Location Vegvisir

  1. Scout the Ashlands for Putrid Hole entrances and mark each one. Enter ready for the Morgen inside; use the clearing and retreat method in the foothold guide.
  2. Inspect the interior for a glowing Vegvisir and interact with it. The quest marker is a question mark labelled Mysterious Location, rather than Fader’s altar. Not every cave contains this clue; mark searched caves so you do not repeat them.
  3. Plan a returnable route to the marker. Make a new staging stop if the trip exceeds your supplies. A map pin is the destination, not proof that the straight line across lava or sea is passable.

Match the ruin to the fragment you still need

Each site has an elite Monument of Torment producing two-star Charred. Our recommendation is to clear an approach, attack the monument when an opening is available, then finish the remaining enemies. Do not stand at the altar sorting inventory while reinforcements arrive.

Use the pickaxe on a grausten wall of the closed ruins. Visible damage confirms a breakable target; continue until you have a usable gap. These ruins do not require a Battering ram or a dungeon key. Preserve a clear route back through the opening.

Check the fragment’s name in your inventory and read the next Vegvisir as separate actions. If you discovered the locations out of order, identify the missing tip, blade or hilt using the table. Reading a later marker does not award earlier fragments.

Wait through the feint before committing

Reto naturally has two stars and uses heavy melee attacks. He is weak to spirit; slash and blunt are usable, while pierce, fire and frost are resisted and poison is ineffective. Choose a practiced weapon over a hurried switch to an unfamiliar build. If using a bow, expect the pierce resistance to make the fight slower and bring a generous ammunition reserve.

Start by learning the room and the route back to the actual exit. The central pillar can help you move around him, but it is not permission to stand still. Keep room behind you and avoid trapping yourself against the cave wall.

  • Do not build the first attempt around tanking, routine parries or rolling at the first windup. The delayed variants punish that timing. A familiar ranged or magic setup can attack from farther away, but still needs room and resources; see the existing magic-food and station route before changing builds.

Secure the hilt before doing anything else

Normal-resource fragments are nonrenewable and support one sword per world; higher resource modifiers can change the yield. Waiting for another fragment set is not a dependable replacement plan. Keep the surviving pieces safe while recovering the missing one.

  1. After Reto dies, collect the Dyrnwyn hilt fragment and check your inventory. Return to the protected staging point and place it with the tip and blade.
  2. The tip and blade have direct portal-compatible item references. The standard portal restriction list also excludes the hilt, supporting an ordinary-portal return; its individual item flag was not available in this research. Check carried restrictions before departure and retain the physical return route. Metals collected along the way still need a suitable Stone portal or physical haul.
  3. If you die, eat and Rest at the reserve base, equip the backup kit and return through the prepared route. Clear the exterior again before entering. Draw Reto away from the tombstone, retrieve equipment when you have space, and leave to re-equip safely; do not turn a recovery attempt into an underprepared rematch.
  4. If the return base was destroyed, rebuild its shelter and bed, claim the bed and verify the spawn point, then restore the portal. If a fragment is missing, check the altar or death site, staging chests and other players’ inventories before searching for another location.

When something goes wrong

Several Putrid Holes have no quest marker.

The Vegvisir is not present in every cave. Mark fully searched holes and continue scouting new ones; do not confuse the Fader marker in a fortress with this quest.

The third altar has no sword piece.

That ruin leads into the Tomb of Lord Reto. The hilt is his drop; break the wall and locate the cave entrance beyond the altar.

A dodge or parry worked once but the next strike killed me.

Reto has delayed variants with similar windups. Move completely out of range and wait for the actual strike before returning; keep the next attempt’s food, stamina and recovery route ready.
