The Ashlands · Survival journey

Mine flametal and build your Ashlands equipment and meals

Pre-1.0 reference · selected 1.0 corrections · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Mine a reachable flametal vein with the black-metal pickaxe, keeping a solid-ground escape and spare basalt bombs. Leave as soon as a deposit becomes unsafe. Smelt ore in a blast furnace, reserve station and siege materials, and improve a familiar combat kit. Renew food production before another haul.

Use temporary lava platforms carefully, reserve the first bars for stations and transport, and choose a complete repeatable combat kit.

1.0 changes for this guide Late-game gear durability · Ashlands encounters

Selected changes reviewed on . Other mechanics remain a pre-1.0 reference.

Late-game gear durability

Mistlands and Ashlands gear received higher durability. Check your item’s current durability and repair before departing. Keep the reserve kit in the guide.

Still unresolved: New durability values and per-item coverage are unresolved; this does not revalidate crafting costs or station levels.

Ashlands encounters

Spawn chances were reduced for multiple Ashlands enemies, while the interval between Charred spawns was shortened. Do not read the rebalance as a guaranteed longer quiet interval or lower overall difficulty. Keep a short route back to cover.

Still unresolved: Spawn probabilities, intervals and resulting difficulty are not quantified.

Before you start

  • A working return network from the foothold guide.
  • A repaired black-metal pickaxe, space for ore and a maintained blast furnace.
  • Asksvin materials and Proustite powder for basalt bombs if crossing lava; no lava shortcut is assumed safe.

Make the escape before hitting the ore

Hunt an isolated Asksvin on solid ground with an open retreat: a head draw-back precedes its bite, a backward step cues its headbutt, and a body wiggle warns of a pounce. Dodge the committed attack, take a short opening and reset; keep your back away from lava. Asksvin drop hides, bladders and tails; Lava Blobs and unstable lava rocks supply Proustite powder. Make basalt bombs at the workbench and keep some at home for recovery. Throwing one onto lava creates a temporary platform. It begins sinking after its limited lifetime, so a chain laid on the outward trip is not a permanent bridge back.

Choose a vein close to land when possible. Keep fighting away from the lava edge: knockback can defeat otherwise good armor. Test a short crossing without valuable cargo and identify the next solid point before mining. Fire resistance reduces burning; it does not make lava a place to stand.

Leave the vein while an exit still exists

  1. Use the black-metal pickaxe on ore nodes and collect the drops. Preserve stamina and inventory weight for the way off.
  2. Hits can trigger the vein’s sinking. Watch and listen for movement and get to solid ground early; do not gamble the kit on the last node. A submerged vein does not regenerate.
  3. Take the ore through your stone entrance to storage, then feed the blast furnace with coal. Use the blast furnace, not the ordinary smelter. Reserve bars for the next named project before crafting armor.

Connect the forge level to the equipment you choose

For a straightforward melee route, carry a familiar sword and round shield, with heavy armor if you prefer its margin over mobility. The recipes below provide an Ashlands upgrade path; upgrading everything at once is unnecessary. Try the new weapon against an isolated ordinary enemy before taking it into a fortress.

Base Nidhögg, Flametal shield and Flametal armor require black forge level 3. The basic forge plus its cooler and a metal cutter reaches that level. Retain the earlier extensions; duplicate copies do not provide new levels. Use the upgrade tab and its displayed costs if you decide to improve quality later.

Budget 5 flametal for the metal cutter and 10 for a battering ram if using the planned fortress breach. A base heavy armor set alone takes 56 flametal. The breastplate also needs a Morgen heart; gather it from a controlled Morgen encounter, and leave the current chest piece in service until all ingredients are ready.

Gem variants are optional later projects; use the gemstone decision and conversion route before committing materials. Converting an upgraded Nidhögg resets its quality, so select a variant before spending heavily on upgrades. This route remains usable with the base sword rather than assuming a particular fortress gem drop.

Budget the Ashlands equipment you still need → Combine the Metal cutter, sword, shield and armor costs from these recipes.

Bring Ashlands ingredients into the existing kitchen

Gather vineberry clusters from vines on ruins and pick fiddleheads and smoke puffs on safe ground. Return some early finds immediately. Asksvin tails are a hunting reward, while honey and Mistlands ingredients come from the supply chains you already maintain.

An accessible melee meal recommendation is Fiery svinstew for health, Spicy marmalade for stamina, and a different health food such as the earlier Meat platter. Both new recipes work at cauldron level 5. Use raw Asksvin tail for the stew; the cooked item is different. Bring spare servings rather than assuming one meal lasts through scouting and combat.

If continuing a practiced magic build, maintain eitr foods and staff repairs from the Mistlands kit. The rolling-pins extension raises a cauldron with all earlier extensions to level 6, unlocking Marinated greens. Follow the Ashlands magic route for two eitr foods, Embla equipment and staff choices. Do not switch to a spell build for a boss attempt before practicing its food and resource recovery.

When something goes wrong

The vein starts sinking before I finish.

Leave immediately using the reserved route and bombs. Preserve the equipment and gathered ore; there is no requirement to empty the vein.

The black forge hides the armor recipe.

Pick up every ingredient and check level 3. The cooler and metal cutter must connect to the forge; the cauldron and ordinary forge upgrades do not count.

I died on lava with the only bombs.

Use the stored backup bombs, food and gear to plan a short grave retrieval. Mark the location and approach from solid ground. Repeated unsupported runs do not improve the crossing.
