Breach Charred Fortresses and collect Fader’s bells

Pre-1.0 reference · selected 1.0 corrections · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Find the dark fortress walls and central beacon, secure an external return route, and clear the approach. A fueled battering ram can break the entrance, but be ready to disengage before defenders surround it. Defeat the inner threats and destroy the Bell altar for fragments. Collect nine fragments and craft three bells at a black forge.

Scout a fortress, remove sustained enemy pressure, make a controlled breach, and turn fragments into the actual boss offering.

1.0 changes for this guide Late-game gear durability · Ashlands encounters

Selected changes reviewed on . Other mechanics remain a pre-1.0 reference.

Late-game gear durability

Mistlands and Ashlands gear received higher durability. Check your item’s current durability and repair before departing. Keep the reserve kit in the guide.

Still unresolved: New durability values and per-item coverage are unresolved; this does not revalidate crafting costs or station levels.

Ashlands encounters

Spawn chances were reduced for multiple Ashlands enemies, while the interval between Charred spawns was shortened. Do not read the rebalance as a guaranteed longer quiet interval or lower overall difficulty. Keep a short route back to cover.

Still unresolved: Spawn probabilities, intervals and resulting difficulty are not quantified.

Before you start

  • A sustainable combat kit and flametal reserve from the equipment guide.
  • A marked stone-portal route, full meals, Rested and repair supplies.
  • Battering-ram materials and wood fuel if following the siege route; no rare gemstone weapon is required to begin.

Separate the fortress from the fight outside it

Look for the fortress’s dark walls and tall central beacon. Circle only where the ground is safe, mark the entrance and select a retreat point beyond the immediate fighting area. Nearby monsters can turn a breach into a fight on both sides.

Prepare the portal and reserve chest away from the gate before assembling siege equipment. Use cover against ranged defenders and clear accessible enemies in manageable groups. Effigies inside can keep producing reinforcements; identify reachable spawners and destroy them when you have a safe angle instead of endlessly clearing replacements.

Fortress loot is variable. Finding one fortress is progress, but does not guarantee all bells, a particular gem, or a boss locator. Keep a map note for cleared sites so the next search covers new ground.

Breach with room to disengage

  1. Place the ram near the workbench and load ordinary wood into the rear fuel slot. Face the front between the arms and interact to take control, then align the hammers with the gate.
  2. The ram attacks while operated and fueled. Keep a retreat lane beside it. Interact again while looking at the control point, or dodge, to release it if enemies close.
  3. When the gate breaks, stop and deal with defenders before pushing inside. In a group, let the ram operator withdraw while the others contain the opening. Solo, back out and draw a manageable fight onto known ground.
  4. Repair and reassess if the breach remains crowded. More fuel does not solve a trapped operator; clear the threats before moving the machine again.

Loot the central tower and count fragments separately

The central tower has a second fortified gate. After clearing the courtyard, reposition the ram and breach that entrance too; normal weapon hits are not a substitute for siege damage. Stop the ram once the opening is usable so it does not destroy the loot structures inside.

Inspect the tower for its Bell altar, chest, molten cores and possible Fader Vegvisir. Destroy the Bell altar, collect its fragments and interact with any boss locator. Mark the fortress cleared.

Take fragments home and craft bells. Each bell uses three fragments, and Fader needs three bells: nine fragments altogether. Check the finished item name before leaving for the boss. Store spare fragments and gems rather than bringing every valuable into the arena.

If there is no locator or the fragments fall short, repeat the prepared fortress loop elsewhere. The Dyrnwyn side quest and gem weapon upgrades are separate objectives, not required steps for collecting the offering.

Scout the Emerald Flame before carrying the bells

Use the locator to reach the coliseum-like Emerald Flame arena. Walk the approach without offering anything and choose a clear retreat direction. The arena has a building restriction; establish supplies outside it and well beyond the expected fight.

Our recommendation is a second, more distant return portal with its own matching home endpoint. Test both connections, identify which one a death recovery uses, and leave meals and spare fire resistance at home. A second portal with an ambiguous or reused tag is not a working backup.

When something goes wrong

Enemies pin me against the ram.

Dodge or interact to disengage, leave along the reserved lane and clear the approach. Rebuild the breach as a controlled fight rather than repeatedly driving into the group.

One fortress did not supply nine fragments.

That is expected variability. Mark it cleared and locate another fortress; count finished bells separately from fragments.

The portal near the arena was destroyed.

Use the distant backup. Re-establish travel and food before recovering the combat kit; do not lead the same fight into the replacement portal.
