Before you start
- The crafted bells, altar and backup route from fortress preparation.
- A practiced, repairable kit and meal supply from Ashlands equipment.
- Spare fire-resistance drinks, healing and stamina support, a clear inventory, and recovery equipment at the spawn.
Make the attempt sustainable before ringing the bells
For our melee route, bring Nidhögg or a practiced suitable weapon, a shield and the prepared armor. Check food timers, restore health and Rested, and keep fire resistance active. A magic player can retain the practiced frost/eitr route; the Staff of Embers is a poor boss-damage choice here.
Assign one player to the offering in multiplayer. Place the three bells at the offering points, complete the interaction prompts and move into the scouted fighting space. Do not repeat the offering during an existing attempt.
Treat this as an endurance fight. A second stack of food or a usable retreat is more valuable than spending every inventory slot on loot. Our recommendation is to enter with enough supplies to disengage and recover without consuming the home reserve.

Respond to the warning before attacking again
Fire resistance is damage reduction, not permission to stand in a pool. Fissure hazards cannot be solved by holding block. Watch where the next safe patch lies as well as where the boss stands.
| Signal | Danger | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Head or paw winding back at close range | Bite, claw swipe or a broad spin. | Stop the combo. Leave reach or use a practiced timed dodge; never assume a stationary shield handles every follow-up. |
| Small green circles appearing underfoot | Delayed fissures and lingering hazardous ground. | Keep moving toward clear space and away from the marked circles. Do not stop on an older marker after the first one erupts. |
| Meteor impacts or a line of breath | Fire remains after the projectile or breath passes. | Move sideways out of the line, then choose clean ground for the next exchange. |
| A forming wall of fire around you | Shrinking room to maneuver. | Move toward an open gap while it forms; avoid trapping yourself between the boss and burning ground. |
| Summoned charred joining the fight | Extra ranged and melee pressure. | Clear a manageable group or reposition before returning to boss damage. |

Spend stamina on movement before damage
Take a short exchange after an attack resolves, then reassess. Running and attacking until empty leaves no answer to a new ground warning. Walk while conditions allow it and stop attacking before the escape reserve disappears.
As the fight becomes more crowded, shorten the attack window. Clear nearby summons when they obstruct movement, and use the remaining arena rather than defending one favorite position. Do not lead Fader toward the reserve portals just to take one more hit.
If food, durability or mobility is failing, withdraw along the prepared route. Resupply away from the boss. An extended break can allow enemy health to recover; a nearly empty health bar is not a promise that the next approach will be safe.

Recover the grave without spending the backup route
- After death, use the home reserve: eat, restore health and Rested, take spare protection and leave room for the original inventory. Choose the intact distant portal first.
- Scout the grave approach and current hazards. Retrieve only when there is a clear route out; the original grave persists under the default death rules used by the recovery guide.
- Once the kit is retrieved, move away, re-equip and repair. If portals were lost, rebuild access before returning to the arena. Never turn the recovery into a fresh offering.

Store the rewards and stop at the current evidence boundary
Collect the Fader trophy and relics, check the ground for missed drops, then return to protected storage. Mount the trophy on its Sacrificial Stones hook and interact to select the power if wanted. Read the displayed effect before choosing it; older guides describe powers that have since changed.
Repair, restore the home reserve and keep the useful portal network. In default world progression, defeating Fader also enables charred enemies to appear at night in several earlier biomes. Revisit exposed paths and beds when planning later night travel.
Valheim 1.0 and Deep North are now released. This page has not yet been mechanically revalidated for the new Deep North progression, so it deliberately stops here rather than guessing how Fader rewards continue. Keep the rewards, then use the returning-player guide to choose a world and prepare before following released endgame content.

I die while blocking the green ground attack.
Leave the marked ground. Blocking and fire resistance do not make the lingering fissure field safe; reserve stamina for movement before the warning begins.
The damage from my usual attack is disappointing.
Fader is immune to fire/spirit and resists pierce. Check the weapon’s damage components and use the prepared suitable melee or frost route instead of relying on the fire portion.
The last part of the fight becomes chaotic.
Shorten attack exchanges, clear summons that block escape, and move before hazards overlap. Use the resupply route before the kit fails rather than gambling on a final hit.
The relic has no useful recipe in my game.
Store it, then use the returning-player guide. Deep North recipes and progression are not inferred from the launch announcement.
Finish the journey
Use the success check above to recover the rewards, return home, and replenish supplies. Continue with the Deep North route when your next expedition is ready.
