Before you start
- All three different Dyrnwyn fragments, safely recovered.
- A sheltered Black forge, Artisan table and access to Refined eitr, Iron and Copper.
- Smelted Flametal and at least one Bloodstone from a Charred Fortress chest.
Build the missing extensions beside your forge
- Check the displayed Black forge level. Our route uses three different extensions: Black forge cooler, Vice and Metal cutter. If the cooler and cutter are already connected from the Ashlands equipment route, the Vice is the missing step.
- Craft two Mechanical springs at the Artisan table. They use 6 Iron and 2 Refined eitr in total. Then set aside another 5 Iron and 8 Copper for the Vice itself.
- Use the Hammer to place the Vice near the forge, alongside the cooler and cutter. Reposition an extension if its connection fails. Reopen the forge and confirm level 4; three copies of one extension do not supply three levels.
- Keep the forge sheltered and usable for both the craft and later repairs. The Mistlands station guide covers Black cores, marble and the refinery chain if this is a new workshop.
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Black forge | 10 Black marble + 10 Yggdrasil wood + 5 Black core | Hammer; within workbench range |
| 1 × Black forge cooler | 5 Iron + 5 Copper + 4 Black marble | Hammer; within black forge range |
| 1 × Artisan table | 2 Dragon tear + 10 Wood | Hammer; no station required |
| 1 × Refined eitr | 1 Sap + 1 Soft tissue | Eitr refinery |
| 1 × Mechanical spring | 3 Iron + 1 Refined eitr | Artisan table level 1 |
| 1 × Vice | 5 Iron + 8 Copper + 2 Mechanical spring | Hammer; within Black forge range |
| 1 × Metal cutter | 5 Black marble + 5 Flametal + 5 Ashwood + 4 Charred bone | Hammer; within black forge range |

Bring the right metal and reserve the gem
Dyrnwyn uses Flametal bars from the Blast furnace. Ore is not interchangeable with bars; the shared smelting recipe uses 2 Coal per ore. If the Metal cutter is also new, reserve its 5 Flametal in addition to the sword’s 20. A copied reference table labels this input as ore, but the dedicated sword recipe and generated recipe registry agree on Flametal.
Bloodstones can appear in Charred Fortress chests, so a cleared fortress does not promise the gem you need. Use the complete breach-and-loot route, inspect the inner chests, and continue to another fortress if necessary. Reserve the sword’s gem before spending gems on optional gear.
Build at the workshop where your metals already are when practical. Iron, Copper, Flametal and even Mechanical springs block ordinary portals. Bloodstones and the finished sword can travel through them. Use the Stone-portal entry-direction rule or physical cargo route for restricted ingredients.
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Flametal | 1 Flametal ore + 2 Coal | Blast furnace |
| 1 × Stone portal | 10 Greydwarf eye + 30 Grausten + 2 Molten core | Hammer; within stonecutter range |

Craft once, then upgrade the existing sword
Carry all five ingredient types to the level-4 forge, select Dyrnwyn in the Craft tab and inspect the full material list before crafting. You need one of each fragment; duplicates of a tip do not replace a blade or hilt. Confirm the finished sword in inventory before sorting the remaining supplies.
For quality 2, connect the Gem cutter as the fourth distinct extension and confirm forge level 5. Its Bloodstone is a separate expense. Carry the existing sword, select it in the Upgrade tab, and supply the additional 10 Flametal and 1 Bloodstone shown in the upgrade card.
- Collect Ashwood from Ashlands trees and Morgen sinew from Morgens, including the Putrid Hole enemies encountered during the quest. The inspected pre-1.0 station progression reaches level 5. Higher sword qualities in database tables require forge levels 6 and 7; they are not an available upgrade path in this guide.
| Goal | Additional materials |
|---|---|
| Craft quality 1 | One of each fragment, 20 Flametal, 1 Bloodstone. |
| Add Gem cutter | 5 Flametal, 8 Ashwood, 2 Morgen sinew, 1 Bloodstone. |
| Upgrade quality 1 to 2 | The existing sword, 10 Flametal, 1 Bloodstone. |
| All three steps | One fragment set, 35 Flametal, 3 Bloodstones, 8 Ashwood, 2 Morgen sinew. |
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Dyrnwyn | 1 Dyrnwyn hilt fragment + 1 Dyrnwyn blade fragment + 1 Dyrnwyn tip fragment + 20 Flametal + 1 Bloodstone | Black forge level 4 |
| 1 × Gem cutter | 5 Flametal + 8 Ashwood + 2 Morgen sinew + 1 Bloodstone | Hammer; within Black forge range |
| 1 × Dyrnwyn — upgrade to quality 2 | 1 Dyrnwyn, quality 1 + 10 Flametal + 1 Bloodstone | Black forge level 5; Upgrade tab |

Choose it for the task, not just the flame
Dyrnwyn is a one-handed slash-and-fire sword. Its flame also lights nearby surroundings. Use the ordinary primary sword combo for available openings and reserve the slower secondary attack for a clear opening; practise the timing somewhere recoverable before bringing the unique weapon on a dangerous expedition.
The flame is not proof of better damage against every target. Enemy resistance and the actual quality of your existing weapon matter. Nidhögg remains a practical Ashlands sword with replaceable materials and no fragment quest; use its existing crafting route if the immediate goal is dependable progression. Do not replace a well-developed loadout solely because Dyrnwyn is rarer.
Keep the completed sword repaired at the Black forge and retain your former weapon, armor and food at the recovery base. If Dyrnwyn is lost with a tombstone, recover it using the same staged approach as the fragments. The quality-2 upgrade changes the existing item; it does not create a spare.
This optional journey grants a weapon, not a new boss-progression requirement. Continue with the Fader preparation and fight when ready. Deep North is released, but this pre-1.0 guide does not claim a benefit against its enemies until that interaction is revalidated.
| Make | Materials per craft | Station |
|---|---|---|
| 1 × Nidhögg | 3 Charred bone + 12 Flametal + 2 Asksvin hide | Black forge level 3 |

You are ready when…
0 of 3 ready
Saved in this browserWhen something goes wrong
The recipe is visible but crafting is disabled.
Check all three named fragments, smelted Flametal and the Bloodstone in your inventory. Confirm forge level 4, shelter, and room for the output; the recipe has five different ingredients.
The Vice is missing from the Hammer menu.
Craft and pick up Mechanical springs first, then gather the direct Iron and Copper cost. Springs come from the Artisan table, not the Black forge.
My new Gem cutter did not enable the upgrade.
Confirm all four different forge extensions are connected and the station displays level 5. Carry the existing sword, use the Upgrade tab and keep the upgrade’s gem separate from the one consumed by the cutter.
I want another sword for a second player.
Under normal resource drops the fragment set is nonrenewable. Share the completed sword or use a renewable alternative; this guide does not promise another set by waiting or clearing more ordinary caves.
Keep the result useful
Use the success check to finish this job, restock any reserves you used and return to the supporting journeys or your current boss objective.
