Before you start
- A defensible Ashlands foothold, a working return route, appropriate combat equipment and three active foods. Taming is optional after a sustainable landing.
- A prepared capture pit or earth-wall enclosure on solid ground, with a player escape route and food access. Keep it away from lava, your portal and the main working base.
- Gathered Asksvin feed, a chest for eggs, and a separate enclosed nursery with roof, a fuelled heat source and room for growing adults.
Prepare the enclosure before approaching an Asksvin
Choose ground you can defend and reach again after a death. Clear nearby enemies first. Our recommended capture enclosure uses a roomy excavated pit or raised earth walls, with an entry ramp you can remove and a separate way for you to escape. Use the pickaxe and Hoe from your existing building kit; check that the animal can reach food without following you out.
An alerted Asksvin can pounce and cause heavy damage to structures, including grausten. Do not rely on a thin wooden fence or an unattended building-material cage to survive capture. Keep valuable crafting stations and the return portal out of its attack path; the defense guide explains separation and repair access.
Lure one creature at a time while healthy and fed. Close the route behind it, leave the enclosure, and break line of sight. If other enemies join or the escape route fails, retreat to the prepared base and reset the attempt before bringing a second animal.

Use plant food and let the animal calm down
- Collect Smoke puffs from Ashlands ground, Fiddleheads from ferns, or Vineberry clusters from vines around ruins. All three are accepted feed. Drop food within the animal’s reach; a small stack is fine, because it eats one item at a time.
- Move out of sight while staying nearby in the active area. An alerted or hungry Asksvin does not progress. Yellow hearts show taming ticks; inspect status cautiously, because approaching too openly can alert it again.
- Remain nearby with spare food until the tame message and status confirm completion. Thirty minutes describes uninterrupted successful taming, not a countdown that continues through hunger, fighting or your absence. Sleeping does not speed the process.
- Repeat for a second adult and keep both protected. Food supports later breeding and passive healing, so reserve animal feed separately from ingredients intended for your own meals.

Treat a starred capture as a separate risk
Start with an ordinary pair if the priority is a dependable first mount. A two-star wild Asksvin spawns at night and can disappear at dawn before taming begins. The first successful taming tick removes that night-despawn rule; merely trapping it is not the same as beginning taming.
For a night capture, have the enclosure and feed ready before the lure, get it calm enough to eat while it is still night, and watch for progress. Stay nearby through this vulnerable stage rather than leaving through a portal. If dawn arrives before it starts, a penned animal can still be lost.
The egg inherits the stars of the parent that lays it. A mixed-star pair can therefore produce eggs of different qualities. Sort the eggs by quality instead of assuming every egg matches the better parent.

Breed a nearby pair and keep a cold reserve
Put two tamed adults together with room to move, reachable food and no nearby fight. Pink hearts indicate breeding. Keep the area active while you work nearby. If eggs stop appearing, check hunger, alert status, whether the adults can approach each other, and crowding from other Asksvin or eggs.
Collect the eggs into a chest away from nursery heat. They stack up to twenty for storage and travel, but the stack is not a hatchable clutch. Label the reserve by quality and keep some unhatched eggs protected from raids. Our recommendation is to preserve replacements before assigning an adult to riding or harvesting surplus animals.
The general taming and species references differ on precise breeding distance, pregnancy timing and population wording. Use the food/status/heart cues and remove collected eggs from the crowded pen; this guide does not promise a timed egg-production rate.

Bring eggs through a portal and hatch them one at a time
- Carry selected eggs through an ordinary portal to the prepared nursery. Asksvin eggs are portal-compatible under normal rules; use the transport checklist if other items block the journey. Keep a separate reserve at the secure base.
- Split the eggs into individual items and place each on the floor under shelter close enough to a lit heat source. Inspect its status for warmth. A stack of two or more will not hatch, even beside a fire.
- Keep the heat fuelled and sheltered from rain. Separate the fire from hatchlings and leave smoke ventilation and safe player access. The nursery also needs an enclosure: a roof supplies incubation shelter, not animal containment.
- Allow about thirty minutes of valid incubation. Moving an egg or losing the required conditions can interrupt or reset progress, so prepare the site before placing it and use the warmth status rather than a promised hatch time.
- The hatchling is already tame. Allow roughly fifty minutes for it to become an adult before expecting breeding or riding; after hatching, the creature no longer needs incubation heat. Maintain the enclosure and provision adult feed.

Maintain feed and replacements outside the Ashlands
The egg route lets you establish Asksvin at a suitable home base outside the Ashlands. Bring accepted feed through the portal with the eggs, then replenish it from safe Ashlands collection runs. Keep the adults and nursery away from your main entry and from enemies that might reach the herd during a raid.
For a renewable Meadows feed supply, save Vineberry seeds obtained while harvesting Ashvine. Use the Cultivator on cultivated soil beside a wall the vine can climb; leave the plant clear of clipping and overhead obstructions. Healthy mature vines produce berries repeatedly without replanting. Use the farm guide for the Cultivator and a protected growing area.
Keep the breeding pair and cold egg reserve while a different adult becomes the travelling mount. If the pen is breached, restore containment and feed surviving adults first; hatch reserve eggs only after the new nursery is secure.

You are ready when…
0 of 3 ready
Saved in this browserWhen something goes wrong
The animal never eats or shows taming hearts.
Remove nearby threats and break line of sight while staying close enough to keep the area active. Put accepted plant food within reach and give the animal room to path to it. An alert or hungry animal will not progress.
A night-spawned starred Asksvin vanished.
The capture may not have reached its first taming tick before the dawn despawn condition applied. Prepare the pen and feed in advance for the next night attempt; a closed pen alone does not remove that rule.
Eggs stay cold or never hatch.
Split stacks into single eggs, supply a roof and a lit nearby heat source, and check warmth status. Protect the fire from rain and replenish fuel; avoid moving incubating eggs.
The pair is tame but produces no more eggs.
Check both adults are fed and calm, can approach one another, and are not crowded by nearby animals or eggs. Collect eggs and keep the area active; do not use a precise timer as proof something is broken.
