Before you start
- A fresh world or an approach to genuinely unexplored far-north terrain from the route overview.
- A functioning home spawn, spare food and replacement equipment. Use the cargo plan and the route checklist.
- Cold-ready late-game food and equipment appropriate to your character. The biome is accessible early, but first-hand release coverage reports escalating danger and frequent deaths.
Pack the recovery layer before the cargo
- Bring materials for one tested return connection, a small covered repair point and a marked landing. Keep the partner endpoint active at home.
- Leave a spare cold-ready kit, food and boat materials at the home spawn. The first load should be replaceable scouting gear, not every rare item you own.
- Carry enough ordinary building material to test the ground after clearing snow. Do not assume a visible flat patch accepts placement until the preview confirms it.

Land, clear and test in that order
- Mark the approach before leaving the boat and identify a short retreat that does not cross a broad sheet of ice.
- Probe frozen water from the edge and keep stamina for a retreat. Sliding confirms dangerous footing; it does not establish the ice’s load limit or safety.
- Choose ground with sight lines. Clear deep snow where the game blocks placement, then test one cheap piece before unloading cargo.
- Build only a small protected return point and storage buffer. Verify the route from the landing back to it before expanding.
- Return home with one new material or one mapped location. Upgrade the foothold only after the round trip works.

Use new tools without inventing a gate
Iron Gate confirms that the Snow Shovel clears deep snow and the Grappling Hook helps across heights. The exact shovel unlock is not sufficiently corroborated for a recipe card here. A maintained current-game database lists the Grappling Hook as a Black Forge craft using a Hook found in Mistlands chests, but this route does not make it a requirement for landing.
Use the current menus and item descriptions when either tool appears. Carry the Grappling Hook for optional vertical access later; keep a walkable or buildable retreat because an untested grapple is not a recovery plan.

The building preview will not place on the snow.
Clear the deep snow where placement is blocked, test a cheap piece, and relocate if the underlying ground still rejects the build.
I keep sliding into danger on ice.
Stop treating the frozen surface as the route. Re-enter from the edge, recover stamina on stable ground and mark a landward approach.
I died before completing the foothold.
Use the spare kit and the marked landing. Recover the route first, store the retrieved gear, then move the fallback closer before resuming exploration.
