Enter the Sealed Tower and defeat Zil & Thungr

Pre-1.0 reference · not revalidated for 1.0 · Evidence scope ↓

Quick answer

Use Hildir’s map marker to find a Sealed Tower in the Plains. Bring padded equipment, a bow, healing and fire-resistance wine, plus wood and workbench supplies to build exterior access. Clear the upper floors before the basement fight. Defeat Thungr, then Zil, and haul the bronze chest back to Hildir.

Build exterior access, clear the trapped tower, handle both miniboss phases and deliver Hildir’s bronze chest.

Before you start

  • Hildir’s map table read through the Hildir discovery route. Earlier chest returns are not required to enter the tower.
  • The Plains equipment and kitchen loop: padded armor, Black metal sword, Draugr fang, ammunition and substantial meals. Stronger later gear is also suitable.
  • Finished fire-resistance wine and healing mead; a tested return portal, wood for access construction, and a boat or land delivery route.

Prepare a fight and a construction job

Take the repaired padded helmet, cuirass and greaves, your cape, Black metal sword and Draugr fang with obsidian arrows. Carry a shield you know how to use, but plan to evade the large club attacks. The tower duo is a demanding fight even in Plains gear; later equipment or a prepared group can provide more margin.

Use lox meat pie, wolf skewer and bread as a concrete meal set, with refills. Drink finished fire-resistance barley wine before entering combat and renew it when necessary. It reduces fire damage, while Thungr’s club and other physical hits remain dangerous.

Bring a hammer, axe and plenty of ordinary wood for workbenches, wood stairs or ladders and floor platforms. The exact amount depends on the tower and approach; store extra wood at the staging portal so construction does not consume the last recovery materials.

Build access outside the sealed walls

The black-stone walls are unbreakable, and ordinary construction and deconstruction are blocked inside the tower. A pickaxe does not make a ground-level doorway. Exterior access also needs to work on the return trip with a heavy chest.

  1. Clear the nearby Plains threats and establish a tested recovery portal and wood cache away from the tower fight. Mark the transport landing and a route to Hildir.
  2. Place a workbench outside, then build wood stairs or ladders and floor landings against the tower’s exterior platforms. Extend workbench coverage with another workbench on a supported landing when you climb beyond range.
  3. Work upward in short sections, checking structural support and testing a controlled descent. Keep your food active while building; a fall is a real expedition failure.
  4. Enter through an accessible open balcony or continue to the roof entrance. Watch for guards at the opening and establish a cleared retreat area before descending.

Clear the floors before opening the boss fight

Retreat only into space you have already checked. The stairway helps you create distance; it does not promise that every enemy or projectile will stop there.

  1. Draw manageable groups onto the floor you have already cleared. Deal with shamans and their fireballs or protective barriers before pushing into more defenders.
  2. Look down as well as ahead. Traps can be concealed under straw, especially along the route between stairs and doors.
  3. Clear each upper floor and note any gates obstructing your retreat. Destructible gates can be broken with a weapon; the surrounding stone walls cannot.
  4. Before entering the bottom arena, use the outside return route to repair and renew food if needed. Leave treasure in marked storage so you enter with room for supplies and the eventual reward.

Watch the rider while avoiding the club

Take bow shots while distance is available, then use short sword openings after an attack finishes. Return up the cleared stairs before the pair closes the gap; keep enough stamina to make that movement.

Thungr’s death starts the remaining Zil fight. Continue watching fireballs and shields, bait a cast, then close briefly or shoot from a clear angle. Zil can follow up the stairs and even out of the tower, so do not assume the previous retreat point is invulnerable.

Finish Zil and collect the bronze quest chest. Defeating only the large melee opponent does not finish the request.

Zil & Thungr: practical openings
ThreatResponse
Thungr’s regular or delayed swingMove beyond the club’s reach and wait for the actual strike. A delayed swing can catch an early dodge.
Advancing triple club sequenceRetreat into cleared space until all three blows finish. Do not step back in after the first strike.
Zil’s fireballsKeep watching the rider during melee. Move off the projectile line and use cover or distance; fire resistance does not justify standing still.
Blue protective barrierUse this pause to reposition and regain stamina. Resume pressure when it clears rather than spending your whole stamina bar against protection.

Extract the chest, eggs and surviving equipment

The bronze hand-in enables its corresponding event under default world-based raid rules. If you die in the tower, arrive through the protected outside portal with food, fire resistance and reserve equipment. Clear your approach to the grave first; carry the recovered gear and the quest chest on separate trips if needed. Repair damaged access sections before bringing the chest down.

  1. Clear the remaining threats, then take ordinary treasure out separately. The special basement chests contain eggs; put them safely aside for the chicken journey. This is a difficult alternate egg source before Haldor’s post-Yagluth stock.
  2. Make room for the 200-weight bronze chest, then descend by your built access route. Use the boat or land route arranged earlier; ordinary wood portals still reject the quest chest.
  3. At Hildir, use the chest from a hotbar slot while facing her. Check the beaded clothing, headwear and basic fireworks now offered for coins.
  4. If brass and silver were also returned, all three request types are complete. Extra copies of the same chest do not expand her stock again.

When something goes wrong

I cannot build a stair inside the tower or mine through the wall.

Build outside using workbench coverage and supported platforms. Use a balcony or roof opening; the interior construction restriction and unbreakable stone are part of this location.

The first boss fell but no bronze chest dropped.

Continue the fight against Zil. The chest is his drop, so Thungr’s death alone is not completion.

The stair strategy is still getting me hit.

Treat stairs as a retreat route, not immunity. Clear the upper floors, keep fire resistance and food active, and watch projectiles. Return with stronger gear if you cannot create reliable openings.

I cannot carry the reward down safely.

Store and transport other loot first, equip Megingjord if available and keep food active. Repair and test the exterior descent before loading the chest.

Next stepUse recovered eggs for a dependable food supply
