A version-1.0.4 Steam guide reports that Volcano lava sets items to the 1.5× cooked state without the grill’s burn-timing risk. Kingy has not reproduced this on 1.0.12: inspect a disposable catch before and after contact, and stop if the displayed value does not behave as described.
